CaptainEffort,

If Microsoft wanted to put GamePass on Linux, there’s no reason it wouldn’t run on a SteamDeck

Nope, but they definitely won’t do it, as much as I wish they would.

CaptainEffort,

Even better after 2.0, where equipment doesn’t have stats so you can just wear whatever you want.

CaptainEffort,

Yeah it was bad. Now all of your armor comes from augments through ripperdocs, which not only works way better but also just fits better thematically.

CaptainEffort,

They weren’t lying when they were hyping up 2.0, it changed a lot. Now you upgrade your armor by doing it through ripperdocs.

CaptainEffort,

Refusing to bring gamepass to Linux but are fine with making an entirely new handheld. Real classy Microsoft.

CaptainEffort,

I didn’t get that impression at all, to me it sounds like he doesn’t like the windows experience on handhelds and thus wants to drastically improve the experience.

They’ve been using the phrase “every screen is an Xbox” for years, as has their efforts to bring gamepass to every device they can. This isn’t new, this has been the case since before the Deck even released. Yet despite that, and despite Valve’s vocal approval, Microsoft has yet to release any form of gamepass on Linux, unless it’s cloud based ofc.

So to me, from what he said, it sounds like nothing has changed. Their goals remain the exact same that they’ve been for years, only now they want to improve the Windows experience on handhelds.

Hoping I missed something, but that really seems to be what’s happening here.

Edit: And in their “defense”, it’s not an incomprehensible decision. For pretty much the entirety of pc gaming’s existence, Microsoft has been the sole option. Sure, technically you could game on a Mac, or on Linux, but neither were viable. So 99% of pc gamers ended up on Windows. It’s only recently that Proton has had such massive improvements and made Linux more viable, and I’m sure Microsoft isn’t thrilled about that. No way they’d want to add even more to that viability.

CaptainEffort,

How much power do babies really have anyway?

CaptainEffort,

Because I know we’re all thinking it, here are the brains from Jimmy Neutron.

  • CaptainEffort,

iPhone users aren’t a species, they’re human beings that don’t have to be iPhone users. Thanks to competition they are free to choose from a wide variety of other competitors.

This is the equivalent of saying that Walmart has a monopoly because Walmart customers are being forced to purchase items from within Walmart. That because Target isn’t allowed to set up a stall in Walmart, it’s a monopoly.

    CaptainEffort,

Not worth me being a statistic that they can sell to investors imo. Fuck Epic.

Besides, that game’s been on sale for less than $5 on Steam.

    CaptainEffort,

True, they were just so bad for so long that trashing them sort of became the default. I have to like, rewire my brain so I can treat them fairly.

    CaptainEffort,

People’s inability to understand what “pov” means will never not infuriate me

    CaptainEffort,

Like everyone’s just constantly tripping really hard… I can get behind that. It would explain a lot.

    CaptainEffort,

It’s less about the individual people and more about the system itself

    CaptainEffort,

Yeah I wish Hogwarts Legacy had taken more inspiration from Persona. Having a schedule, working on social links, engaging in fun activities outside of school, it all lends itself incredibly well to a Hogwarts game.

Unfortunately it sounds like the creators haven’t ever even touched a Persona game. I remember before the game launched they were asked if there’d be romance options, and they seemed almost offended by the thought since the characters are kids, despite Persona doing the same for literal decades.

Going to a ball in Hogwarts Legacy, or going on a date in Hogsmeade, would’ve been so much fun too.

    CaptainEffort,

Oh no kidding, I loved how they handled the curses. For the most part at least. Like, I would’ve been pretty disappointed if they weren’t usable in-game at all, but was never sure how they could introduce them in a realistic way. So HL literally having entire side quests devoted to you discovering the curses and learning how to use them honestly blew away my expectations.

My only issue with them is being able to use them in front of others so casually. They should’ve just made them unusable if you had another character accompanying you.

    CaptainEffort,

I mean clearly that’s not the only reason, right? If it were, every previous Harry Potter video game would’ve sold just as well.

    CaptainEffort,

This feels like a weird take if you haven’t even played it. Like, how would you know?

The game is flawed, but genuinely super fun, and has a ton going for it outside of “Pokemon with guns”. In a lot of ways it’s what I always wished Pokemon could be, at least in the ways it makes its monsters feel unique and like actual partners instead of battle slaves, which is ironic considering Palworld is the one with actual slavery.

    CaptainEffort,

I like Pokemon for making me feel connected to my Pokemon, and for exploring the world with them.

Imo Palworld had those and does them even better.

    CaptainEffort,

OpenGOAL too, with requiring a Jak and Daxter iso

    CaptainEffort,

There are plenty of Pokemon mods for other games on Nexus, as well as other mods that incorporate copywritten content.

I’m guessing they just got scared off after that guy got a dmca for making a Pokemon mod, even tho part of why they did was because they were paywalling it.

    CaptainEffort,

30 fps on medium, 40-50 fps on low. Honestly not too bad.

    CaptainEffort,

Ah, the classic “people that disagree with me are circlejerking” defense

    CaptainEffort,

Calling something “slop” isn’t a critique, and people downvoting it aren’t circlejerking

    CaptainEffort,

    …have you played it?

    CaptainEffort,

Tbf this guy was sticking his mod behind a paywall. Scumbag

    CaptainEffort,

That poor guy got screwed. His life is forever changed because of a fucking Switch mod

Palworld Becomes the 7th Game Ever to Reach 1 Million Concurrent Players on Steam (www.githyp.com)

“Palworld is now one of only seven games that have seen over 1 million concurrent players on Steam – the others include: PUBG (3.2 mil), Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (1.8 mil), Counter-Strike 2 (1.4 mil), Lost Ark (1.3 mil), Dota 2 (1.2 mil), and Cyberpunk 2077 (1 mil).”

    CaptainEffort,

How? Craftopia got a new update like a day or two ago

    CaptainEffort,

But they also drop those items when you catch them

    CaptainEffort,

On pc yeah. There are a couple for console but they’re far rarer

    CaptainEffort,

I think GameBryo can be good, but it needs some badass people working on it, and loads of time and money poured into it.

And unfortunately I just don’t see Bethesda dedicating the resources needed to truly overhaul it.

    CaptainEffort,

The problem is that the Creation Engine 2 is, in a lot of ways, still the Gamebryo engine. It has all the same advantages, as well as all the same issues. Hell, there are literally bugs shared between Morrowind, Skyrim, Fallout 4, and even Starfield.

You can’t compared CE to something like, let’s say, the Unreal Engine. The Unreal Engine has actually had absurd amounts of resources poured into it, effectively making it a new thing. But the Creation Engine simply hasn’t been - it desperately needs more time and money put into it.

    CaptainEffort,

Maybe. For me it was the original Skyrim paid modding fiasco, because while they did apologize they then went back and tried paid modding again with the Creation Club, with the lame excuse that they were “mini dlc’s”, not actual mods. It was a complete betrayal, and that’s not even mentioning the fact that they’re straight up just doing paid modding now with zero excuses.

Not to mention Fallout 76 with the atomic shop, the shitty bag they tried to scam people with, the whole rum debacle, and ofc their shitty subscription service. I also didn’t love Fallout 4 so that didn’t help either.

And also also, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Fallout 3 either. Hot take, I know, but I prioritize choice and rpg mechanics, and Fallout 3 really didn’t have any outside of “good choice vs comically evil choice”. So to me it always felt like a mediocre fps game with a cool open world. But I’ve always loved Morrowind and New Vegas, and Skyrim’s modding scene has kept me playing for over a decade.

    CaptainEffort,

What did CDPR themselves promise that isn’t in the game?

    CaptainEffort,

It’s as much of an rpg as Fallout 3 and 4. As in, it’s an fps with some very light rpg mechanics.

    CaptainEffort,

That was a functioning feature in the game when they were working on it, that they removed because it caused issues. That was an active choice on their part - not something they lied about.

    CaptainEffort,

Pretty sure it got the mass effect 3 ending treatment, no?

No, the endings diverge pretty drastically. Some even have entirely different end missions.

If you have a quote with them saying that about the backgrounds I’d be interested tho - the backgrounds are pretty much solely for some additional flavor dialogue, nothing more.

    CaptainEffort,

This is hardly news, Nexus has removed mods like these in the past from games like Spider-man and Skyrim. Their rules are pretty straightforward when it comes to stuff like this.

    CaptainEffort,

Jak and Daxter, Crash, and the Lego Star Wars games for sure.

I also loved Wii Sports, Pokemon, and Mario Kart.

Edit: Also admittedly Call of Duty was a big one for me. Stopped playing after MW3.

    CaptainEffort,

Yup, and it even has better battery life and is a bit lighter!

    CaptainEffort,

When people stay mad at you after you apologize, your takeaway shouldn’t be to never apologize again.

Here's what a random person on the internet thought of The Outer Worlds (lemmy.world)

I played the Steam version of the base game, with no DLC. I did not play the Spacer’s Choice “remaster” as it has a reputation for being broken and poorly put together. I played the game to completion on normal difficulty, completing most of the side quests, spending time with all my companions, and trying to get the most...

    CaptainEffort,

I’ve always loved this game and been surprised by the negativity most users have towards it. The writing is excellent, the world is well realized, and it’s the only game I’ve played in a long time that actually lets me kill whoever I want, and continues the story around those decisions. New Vegas did it, and Baldurs Gate 3 recently, but it’s sadly an exceedingly rare thing.

I also loved how all skills could impact dialogue, again similarly to New Vegas. It made every skill worthwhile, and made exchanges with npc’s feel more unique to your character. It’s once again one of the only games where skills like speech or barter actually feel worth it, and is the only game I’ve ever played, outside of New Vegas, where you can simply talk your way through the final boss fight.

I get that it’s not for everyone, especially not if you’re looking for a Bethesda open world game, but it’s a great linear RPG that imo is very underrated.

    CaptainEffort,

I think the Fallout games doing it still makes it “one of the only games”.

Damn I wish modern Fallout took more inspiration from the originals.

    CaptainEffort,

    What matters is the OS.

Xbox can run Linux, and therefore Proton. Would you say that Spider-man is on Xbox because of that? Obviously not, that’d be exceedingly stupid.
