The company apparently uses AI to process faces to determine gender, approximate age and mood in order to try and figure out which products the person might want.

I learned this while trying to find tech specs for uhhh… research purposes.

The writer should maybe go and visit some nursing homes. They’ll find a fuckload of poor old people that are most definitely not wealthy.

Really loving this bullshit corner us Americans have been painted into. I’m so excited to get out and vote, y’all.

I’d argue the situation in Gaza would be exactly the same. The only thing that would be different is the political language around it all. Asking Israel nicely to maybe genocide less people, vs not doing that at all is going to lead to the same outcome, which is Israel continuing to do whatever they want while we send them money.

There are core imperialist efforts that neither party will ever push back on because it’s political suicide. Israel and this genocide are one of them.

Quake 3 if you wanna go old school. Pretty much anything will run it these days and you can easily spin up a local server for it. You can do FFA or play on teams.

Rocket League is always fun IMO. Good to blow off steam and not have to focus on story.

Civ 6!

It’s Civ 6. Had never seen this myself until my wife showed me lol.

A RULE SPY'S IN THE BASE?! (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I searched up “Lemmy” on the PlayStore and noticed that Reddit appears right before the last lemmy client in that search X3 do u guys know if there r any other lemmy clients worth trying? I randomly felt like trying all I could find and for now I’ll stay on Jerboa and the Web UI but I use Voyager too now, mainly for DMs...

Arctic is my jam.

Yeah, sorry lol. I’ve heard Voyager on Android is good but I’d probably download Raccoon for the app icon lmao.

Exercise is the only thing that has ever sorted out any back issues I’ve had in my life. It’s all about strengthening your muscles to keep supporting your body properly. If your muscles are weak, your posture suffers, and pain comes with it.

Hey, I’m learning Golang too! I’m gonna check this out. Really cool idea.

The game takes mechanics and inspiration from tons of games. Fortnite, Pokémon, Breath of the Wild, farming and crafting sims… that’s kind of the appeal honestly.

You're Not Imagining It: Google Search Results Are Getting Worse, Study Finds (gizmodo.com)

For the past few years, a growing number of users, analysts, and experts raised alarms about a truth that feels obvious to a lot of people who surf around in web browsers: the quality of Google results is in serious decline. Google disagrees.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Google search is horrendous now. Instead of showing you relevant search results, it’s become an advertising race to the top game. If they can find “sponsored” links or shopping results related to your search, those go to the very top space. It’s about to get way worse as the rise of AI continues to rot the brains of board room suits.

I use Ecosia and DDG. Ecosia on my personal laptop, and DDG on my phone browser.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

It’s very hit or miss for deeper searches. Sometimes at work I just default back to Google because I need quick results that are more relevant. Ecosia has been decent but I don’t have enough hours into it yet. I’m open to ideas, honestly.

Everybody wants to get in on that US military money. They probably saw how haphazardly the US sends billions of dollars to Israel for genocide and wondered how they could get an endless faucet of cash for themselves.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

One hundred percent. Part of why I ditched Spotify was because of the CEO investing in military AI. That was quite a while ago now.

I use Duolingo for German but I’d happily switch to something else if they’re going to pull this shit. I’ll often times take things from Duolingo and run them through the Translate app on iOS to see if there are differences. It’s not ideal, but I also have no allegiance to companies.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

HP has been doing this shit for ages in other spaces. When I tried to put a non-HP burner in one of their desktop computers years ago, the burner spun out of control and refused to open. Same thing happened again when I got a replacement burner. When I finally got a HP burner, it worked fine.

The same tower also refused to acknowledge an aftermarket GPU, despite changing the jumpers like guides suggested.

Don’t buy anything HP. Don’t support them at all.

orca, (edited )
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I can’t explain it either but it happened with 2 different CD-ROM devices until I put in an HP model one. The GPU could’ve just been a random thing, but the CD-ROM was a pretty weird coincidence. Trust me, it made no fucking sense to me either, but it’s only ever happened to me with that HP tower and I’ve built a handful of PCs myself. If someone had a better explanation (2 faulty non-HP drives in a row?), I’d accept that too.

For context, this was probably around 2001 or 2002.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Pretty sure the current admin is too busy tripping over itself to help Israel continue carrying out genocide in Palestine.

Any time I hop on BF 1943 on Xbox, every game I find is filled with people. It’s definitely not super active, but it’s also far from dead.

That one is going to sting the most for me honestly. It’s still a lot of fun to hop into for a few hours.

Steam Deck Owners: What’s been your favorite game that you first discovered on Steam Deck and now you can’t seem to put down?

Looking for those games that you may have heard about but never tried until you got a Deck. Or old games on systems you never had that you’re trying for the first time. Or new AAA games that just released in the last year or two that you picked up for the first time specifically to play on Steam Deck and have kept you glued to...

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I installed 1,000 old game ROMs for NES, SNES, Sega Genesis/Master System, N64, and PS1. I’ve been reliving all of my childhood games since I got it. Road Rash on the PS1 was one I never played (and forgot existed) until my wife told me about it. What a blast.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Their System Shock remake is awesome, so this should be great too. I’m pretty sure they have a whole list of games they want to bring back.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

This game was not engaging at all for me until like the very end. It has no replay value like the previous installments did. Not really surprising.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I saw recent studies show that Facebook is no longer cool to younger generations, and the older generations are either not remotely interested in VR, and/or aren’t interested in Meta out of principle (security, ethics, etc). I know that’s hand-wavy and anecdotal, but I’m trying to gather who is going to buy these in big enough numbers to make them profitable. Probably just another vector that they want to hoard your data from.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

There are people that benefit from Twitter sinking (foreign governments, the US government, Twitter’s Saudi investor), so this has been my theory as well. I don’t think it’s a scenario where he’s aware though. I think he’s a useful idiot that can be manipulated.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

If Twitter is at least hindered, it no longer works as a platform that gives people on-the-ground information about what’s going on in the country. When Twitter was at its peak, it was a tool for the working class to stay connected about protests and other events occurring in real time. That makes it more difficult for a government to control the narrative. Since the media can’t be trusted, Twitter would often become the place people go for information about shady shit a company is doing, outing cops trying to blend into protests, and other corrupt shit.

Now that Twitter is becoming almost entirely paywalled and stripped of any real value, one of the last bastions of information for the working class is essentially gone. It’s no longer a hub that people use for such things. If you want to stay connected to a mesh network of people in a mass protest or something like that, Twitter is no longer a viable option to get information out immediately.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

That’s precisely why they invested in it. Sinking that ship means that one of the few remaining lifelines for working class communication around the world goes down in flames. When mass protests, school shootings, the Capitol invasion, and police violence occurred, which social media platform was almost always the place you’d end up reading about it from someone on the ground? Twitter. Think about how much easier the narrative can be controlled when Twitter is gone (or at least behind walls).

Wow, this game looks awesome!

I dumped a ton of hours into Battlefield 3, and the Bad Company games. Now in terms of BF, I mostly play Battlefield 1943. I tried 2042 but immediately hated it. They gutted the game of everything that made the series so good.

Totally going to snatch this one, thanks!

I used to play Urban Terror a ton back in the day. Not a massive game like BF and BattleBit but it’s a super fun shooter (and it’s free!).

‘Call of Duty’ Doesn’t Just Depict Bad History—It’s Pro-War Propaganda (progressive.org)

I just started playing COD Black Ops Cold War because I got it through my PlayStation Plus subscription and wanted to try it out. I’ve previously played some others like Modern Warfare (1 and 2) and WWII. While it always felt a bit over the top and propaganda-ish, I really liked it for the blockbuster feeling and just turning...

Sea of Thieves is adding private single-crew servers in December (www.eurogamer.net)

Five and a half years and endless requests from the community later, Rare has announced it'll finally be adding private servers to Sea of Thieves - meaning a single crew of up to four players can explore the world without fear of PvP encounters - starting this December, as part of the multiplayer pirate adventure's Season 10....

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I stopped playing because I was a solo sailor on a Sloop that got absolutely destroyed repeatedly by full crews on big ships. The excitement of trying to elude unfriendly crews was fun for a while, but sometimes I just want to explore, dammit.

I see we’ve teleported back into the 1990s during the violent video games scare among parents. Gotta make excuses instead of, you know, actually facing the real problems.

orca,

Using high school as a marker for what to expect for the rest of life is such a terrible idea. Just throw that in the rubbish and go experience people for yourself. Wade through the assholes and you’ll find tons of nice folks just trying to live.

orca,

There’s an official dock you can get for it. I have one and it’s awesome. Has a USB-C for power, HDMI, and 2 regular USB ports for peripherals. It even has an Ethernet port.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

What was the worst game that comes to mind from your time writing? I used to write album reviews for a metal site years ago and one of our writers got HIM’s latest album at the time. They really just didn’t like the album and I shit you not, the review garnered 1,000+ comments from pissed off fans. It got so out of hand, we had to close comments.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Man, DN4E sat in limbo forever. I remember waiting patiently for it knowing full well it would be a mess, but I didn’t care because I was such a massive Duke Nukem fan. Definitely on my list of bad games but I managed to complete it. It was so dated and clunky.

I vaguely remember Brink and all of the hype absolutely vanishing when it came out. I think I ended up skipping it because of the feedback people had.

Thanks for sharing!

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

If this isn’t in your library yet, absolutely get it if you can. It’s so much fun. I laugh out loud at it often.

orca,

I will happily continue to not pay for games that do this and I won’t be missing out on anything.

This is on par with restaurants that microwave garbage food. They’re phoning it in to squeeze as much profit as possible out of the product. That tells me you don’t want to make games people enjoy, you want to make games that do nothing but maximize profit. I ain’t here for that shit. I’m willing to pay money for companies that respect art and trades, not ones that worship capitalism and exist to appease assholes in suits.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I’ll be playing it via GamePass and can try to report back once I have some hours under my belt in it.
