eventually, after it worked for the most part and became less relevant

That’s really the issue though. Would Biden have ended it otherwise? I’m going to hold my nose and vote for the guy, but I’m not so convinced he would have.

I’m not doing a “both parties are the same” thing, I’m saying there’s a long history of the next president not ending what the previous president did even if they’re from the opposite party and even though what was happening was simply immoral. If anything, Trump was more of an outlier there.

So I can’t say I’m assured that the Biden administration would have ended it if it was still relevant.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m glad they had nothing better to do.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Why? What harm does cocaine cause that’s any worse than legal alcohol?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I know a very easy way for the war to end right now, Vlad.

You order your troops to leave Ukraine.

War over.

We built a mean game to test AI's ability to apologise (www.bbc.com)

The project was a test to see how artificial intelligence might change one of the most delicate types of human interaction: the interpersonal apology. The companies who make AI-powered chatbots suggest we should find ways to insert them into our lives when we don’t know what to say or how to say it. That’s all well and good...

I think that Canadian trucker convoy should have put to bed the stereotype of the always-polite, always-apologetic Canadian.

The military program started under former President Donald Trump and continued months into Joe Biden’s presidency, Reuters found – even after alarmed social media executives warned the new administration that the Pentagon had been trafficking in COVID misinformation. The Biden White House issued an edict in spring 2021 banning the anti-vax effort, which also disparaged vaccines produced by other rivals, and the Pentagon initiated an internal review, Reuters found.

Well that’s just fucking shameful.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

“Sorry, huh?” is not an option, so I can’t answer.

Qanon has contingencies that believe both JFK, Jr. and his father are still alive, so this shouldn’t really be surprising to people that it happens in Russia as much as it happens in the U.S.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I knew there was a reason Putin invaded!

To facilitate Western business interests! It’s so obvious now!

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I get it now! This was in the works for years! Western business interests installed Putin as a sleeper agent in Russia and then forced him to invade Ukraine!

FlyingSquid, (edited )
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Got it. Clinton interfered with the Russian elections in the 1990s knowing that one day, Putin would become dictator-for-life and invade Ukraine on a spurious pretext in order to create new business interests for Western companies.

Sounds very plausible.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I thought it went back to Bill Clinton. Make up your mind.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Why start at Clinton? If it hadn’t been for the Vikings, there would be no Russia.

So maybe we should blame the Vikings for Putin invading Ukraine.

Or, and maybe this is going way out on a limb- we blame Putin for doing what he could have just not done and could still stop doing rather than blame a guy who hasn’t been president in a quarter century?

You are trying really hard to not connect the knife sticking in the stab wound with the murder.

They’re whichever one absolves Putin from any responsibility for his own actions.

I certainly had an easier time believing Laurence Luckinbill was Leonard Nimoy’s half-brother than I did believing that Tom Hardy was Patrick Stewart’s clone.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

They might be talking about the director’s cut, which is definitely an improvement. I’d still call it a weaker entry in the franchise, but far better than Star Trek V.

Aside from it being a little on the dull side, I think TMP’s biggest sin is suffering from being from the era of disco fashion.

Did DeForest Kelley have an ‘everyone must see my chest’ contract or something?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

He was fine in terms of performance because he’s a decent actor, he just did not in any way convince me he was a Picard clone. You could claim that this was because of his time with the Remans or whatever, but it just seemed like a needless plot idea that just didn’t work. In fact, if Shinzon was just a rebel Romulan, it might have been a better movie.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

How do you think the Houthis determined which ship they were attacking? The problem is they’re attacking any ship they can reach and claim it’s to help Gaza.

Which isn’t on the coast of the Red Sea.

People keep defending them for it too as if this somehow really does help Palestinians and doesn’t just give the Houthis a PR opportunity.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You know that “Everything is Awesome” song from The Lego Movie?

Yeah, fuck that.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And that would be a good idea why?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

This is hardly anything new.

Yes, that was my point. I’m not sure why you thought my point was exactly the opposite.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Why does the US have a base in Guantanamo Bay, anyway?

Because of a 1903 lease agreement with no end date which the post-revolutionary government has not gone back on so far. They protest it, but they have yet to actually say the terms have changed. And they also have a backlog of U.S. money waiting for them when they wish to renegotiate. Don’t underestimate the PR boost having a U.S. naval base on Cuban soil gives to the Cuban government the same way having North Korea and South Korea share a border is good propaganda for both countries.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, again, they protest it but also refuse to renegotiate it.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

All Cuba has to do is go to the negotiating table. It is good for their propaganda to not do so and they don’t need Guantanamo for anything.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Are you really equating the U.S. sending a yearly uncashed check and keeping a Naval base at the ass end of Cuba with people being enslaved?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

So you are saying a U.S. naval base at the ass-end of Cuba is the same as human enslavement?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Okay, this was my original comment:

Now- are you saying a U.S. naval base at the ass-end of Cuba is the same as human enslavement?

Are you going to continue to troll and violate civility rules or are you going to answer my question?

@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

What sort of shows are birds into when they go to their bird friend for a movie and the sex?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Why does bean water and fruit water cost the same as cow water?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

How exactly is me saying that it behooves us to educate people a defeatist attitude? I’d say that “Biden needs to do this or else I won’t vote for him” is defeatist since you know he won’t do that.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That’s not defeatism, that’s realism. Neither Trump or Biden will change America’s pro-Israel stance that America has had for decades and only a fool would think otherwise. So basing your vote on that and refusing to vote for him if he doesn’t is also foolish because it will result in a dictatorship.

“Either he does what I want or I let the dictator win” is as foolish as it gets.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

He can, but expecting him to and not voting for him if he doesn’t is, again, extremely foolish. All it does is get the other guy with the exact same stance, but who also wants a dictatorship and concentration camps to win.

Because you didn’t get your way.

In fact, that’s not just as foolish as it gets, it’s as selfish as it gets.

I’m guessing you aren’t trans, which is why you have this attitude. You won’t be thrown into a concentration camp so it’s fine for you.

The only bad genocide is the one happening on the other side of the world, after all. Genocide of trans people? That’s not a bad thing, is it?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Sounds more like you would rather support two genocides. Biden can’t force you to not vote or vote for someone else, that’s on you.

And by not voting to stop Trump, you’re voting in favor of trans genocide.

Which you’re obviously okay with.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t need to tell myself anything. You’ve already shown that you don’t think trans lives are worth saving.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Doing the “I’m rubber, you’re glue” thing won’t work here, because you’re the one talking about doing this to stop genocide, not me. And yet you are apparently totally unconcerned with the ongoing trans genocide in America and how it would get worse under Trump.

If that does concern you, what do you plan to do about it? Will you just stand by as trans people are marched into camps and say, “I guess Biden should have done what I wanted” or do you have some sort of idea of how to stop things from getting that far that doesn’t rely on other people you don’t even know to do what you personally want?

Generally when I get into discussions like this with people like you, they deny there is a trans genocide going on and imply there won’t be one if Trump gets in either. Let’s see if you’re more grounded in reality and can actually answer my question.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

What does “fight beside them” mean? They won’t be fighting for the same reason Jews didn’t fight when Nazis came for them. They were met with an overwhelming force in the entire Nazi government.

So what exactly do you plan to?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The resistance movements and guerilla warfare that stopped the Holocaust?

The resistance movements and guerilla warfare that is stopping the genocide in Gaza?

You plan not having a conversation about them because they don’t work. But you also aren’t interested in talking about stopping it before it starts.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Did the convoy involve a genocide?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

See, the difference is that the people at the convoy were given a chance to disavow the Nazis as the media talks to the organizers. The people at these protests are called Hamas sympathizers and the organizers are not even contacted by the media.

But the organizers at these anti-genocide protests seem never to be interviewed by the media. Do you think it’s because they’re hiding?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You do know that we have no idea whether or not someone is seeking asylum when they’re dead, right?

Are you saying all illegal migrants are refugees even though I have showed evidence of them just doing it for money?

No, I’m saying you have no idea what reason they’re coming over for in general, you’re basing your claim on TV and YouTube videos. And I’m saying they wouldn’t risk their lives if they weren’t desperate.

The funny thing is, you don’t realize that if someone is doing something for money which might kill them, they really need that money. It’s a life or death situation, if not for them then for their families.

Now, are you ever going to explain the significance of burning a passport?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry, I am not going to continue this discussion if you insinuate that is the kind of moderator I am.

I also highly encourage you to report me to lemmy.world admins if you think I would delete all of your comments for any reason that didn’t violate community rules, because that would be beyond the pale of any moderator.

After all, I’m sure you have some basis for making such an accusation, right?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

“After all, I’m sure you have some basis for making such an accusation, right?”

I guess the answer to this question is that no, you just made it up, presumably for sympathy.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You are free to end this discussion whenever you like, but your attempt to goad me into doing something like deleting all of your comments is not going to work.

Again, if you feel that I am doing such things as a moderator, by all means contact the lemmy.world admin about it because it would be absolutely unacceptable for a moderator to behave that way.

I will be very surprised if you actually put your money where your mouth is and don’t reply again.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And all I want is evidence that as a moderator that I would delete all of your comments for disagreeing with you.

See… the problem here is you claim you just want sources but then you tell a lie like that. So what’s the point in providing you with any sources when I already know you lie about me?

If I did provide you with a source, you’d lie and say I didn’t.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I gave you a warning that I would delete your comments for misinformation. You supported them so I did not delete them. I said as much at the time, so I’m not why you’re engaging in this fantasy.

We will see if your ‘this will be my last comment’ claim will be true.
