OMG I just came home with a Sanyo DS13320 from the side of the road and I am ECSTATIC!!! It couldn’t be more perfect for an NES, and it looks in great condition externally.
I haven’t plugged it in yet. It doesn’t appear to be wet anywhere outside or inside, so hopefully it was put outside after it rained this morning.
Should I do or check anything before plugging it in and trying to power it on?
Metroid II is my all-time favorite game in the series. It introduces her ship, introduces her iconic look, and is the last game in the series to not include the “break this with this item” blocks. I just love everything about that game.
This is my first Nintendo system since the NES. I’ve never been a big fan of their first-party properties when I’ve played on others’ consoles, although I am interested in the Switch Zelda games....
FYI we got this game when we we got our Switch and it sat, untouched, for YEARS, until I finally picked it up a few months ago. Honestly, I REALLY enjoyed it! BUT… the first 30 minutes to an hour are very poorly done, and are soooo boring. After that it hooked me.
As someone who’s favorite game in the series is the original Pokémon Red, I think this remake was quite well done. It looks great (much better than Sword / Shield in my opinion), and really trims out a lot of the fluff and grind of the classic games.
Also if he’s playing, you can use the second controller to join him and casually help him catch and battle Pokémon. It’s cute. :)
Let me know if you want any more in depth review or info.
So I have these old, original Game Boy (like, the grey one with the maroon buttons) games I wanna play again (original Pokemon Blue). What can I get to do so?...
FYI the internal cartridge battery that’s used to save your game is probably either dead or nearly dead!
A multimeter should show the battery at 3.25v. Anything less and it could die any day. Changing the battery isn’t too difficult, but it requires soldering.
This is my favorite tool set used to take the one screw out to open the cartridge, to check the battery.
I’m trying to expand my library of classic game/game-inspired music. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I’m including some music that I particularly enjoy for reference....

“Uh oh, the sky is red this morning… You know what they say, red sky at night is a sailor’s delight, red sky in morning is a sailor’s warning.”
Me: “JUST LIKE JESUS TAUGHT!! 😄❤️🥰”
Them: “…😐?”
Matt 16:2-3
He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.
And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

The more rare, obscure, or just a guilty pleasure, the better. Maybe you grew up with it, maybe it’s just the nostalgia talking, any reason is fine....
Thanks for the suggestion! I bought this game back when it came out. Yeah, I was surprised to find out about the Japan-only sequel, it had such a different vibe. 👀
Thanks for the suggestions! I bought Taz-Mania back when it came out. I’ve enjoyed playing through it multiple times, and the sprites are really nice looking.
I think I have 3 out of the 5 Bomberman games for Game Boy… What makes Wario Blast stand out to you?
I got the sequel, Bonk’s Revenge, back when it came out. But more recently I did get Bonk’s Adventure and I LOVE it! It’s a nice casual difficulty, and lots of replayability.
I have! I picked up a copy a couple of years ago. It took me a little while to realize, it’s not about clearing the screen, but about getting a high score. It’s very clever, and a little addicting!
That was actually one of the first games I ever got! I’ve been meaning to try it again as an adult. It’s so hard, but the music and graphics are outstanding.
For me it was Dead Space 2 when I was 12-ish. For reference, at this point the most gruesome/gorey/violent media I was exposed to was the Halo 3 Flood levels and the original 2 Alien movies....
Heyyy I just picked up a copy of Iridion 3D! I haven’t played it much yet but love the 3D effect. Kind of a Starfox style shooter.
If I had to pick one game from your pile to pick up and play right now it’d probably be Sonic Advance. I played and re-played that game a TON, although I never actually beat it.
That’s a great write-up. I’ve never seen an SG-1000 outside of the National Video Game museum in Texas.
I just looked up Girl’s Garden and the article is correct, it does look incredible! Parallax scrolling backgrounds, big bright colorful graphics, and a REALLY fun stage win screen.
and I am really not impressed. I don’t want to know more about the story, don’t want to build a spaceship that I can fast travel with, don’t want to explore the universe....
Hardly retro hardware but now with the new version coming out it’s definitely obsolete. Even so I’m still lovin my rp2+. Even my RP3+ hasn’t been able to replace it....
I’m in a similar situation. I never played FF7 when it came out but started working my way through it recently.
The game is enormous, almost intimidatingly big. But I think the hardest thing preventing me from really getting into it was the Materia system for weapons and items. I just can’t seem to wrap my head around it! XD
I always find it fascinating when they have to make a trailer for an incredibly violent video game but still have it be approved for general audiences. It has to be edited to perfection, down to the frame, to show violence without any of the violence. 😅
It was years after the Switch came out that I finally decided to get one, and honestly the one game that combined me to get it was Link’s Awakening. I love that game so much!
Over the years, I ended up spending the most time playing Animal Crossing. I beat Mario Odyssey and it was nice. I really could not get into Breath of the Wild at all, or the sequel.
I’ve been on the hunt for good sports games for Game Boy. Tecmo Bowl and Blades of Steel (hockey) seem to be two of the best, and can be enjoyed even by people who aren’t really into the sports.
Heavyweight Championship Boxing has a really cool visual effect where it alternates between a top-down view and first-person view that really impressed me!
But I really haven’t played any of them very much yet, so I can’t really give a full review.
Games like punch out?
Been enjoying punch out and super punch out and wondering if there are similar games out there. Any recommendations?
Repaired and repainted a curbside CRT to match my NES. (lemmy.ca)
Repaired some broken solder joints, sanded out the biggest scuffs and polished most of the scratches out of the screen. Oh yeah, and the paint job.
