Please shut up about Wayland/X11

Listen if you have actual constructive criticism or want actual discussion please post. But if your sharing your uninformed and misdirected opinion about why Wayland or X11 sucks your contributing absolutely nothing to the internet. If your someone looking for quick debunks here you go:

  • bUT NViDIa DoEsNT wORk: that has literally nothing to do with the Wayland devs
  • Wayland doesn’t do X thing that X11 does: Think of Wayland more like a bucket of legos while X11 is a prebuilt kit. Wayland aims to be all the pieces you need to build something yourself meaning it can run in VR, mobile, tablets, etc. Wayland + Wlroots/etc + compositor + portals + pipewire/etc + etc is a X11 replacmeny
  • Wayland is buggy: yes development takes time and more importantly money, if you want to speed up progress donate to your favorite window manager or library
  • X11 is insecure: yes and Wayland still aims to fix this but X11 isn’t some kind of horrible security nightmare as long as you have common sense and vet your programs
  • Wayland haters are being witch hunted: the argumentive posts could be considered copypastas at this point, people are tired of the spam

ACTUAL DISCUSSION TO BE HAD ABOUT WAYLAND

  • Accessibility: input handling, screen readers, etc done in a secure way
  • What should Wayland handle and what should library’s handle
  • What portals do we still need

Please contribute something of value to the discussion

I will not be silenced! I hate X11 for not having proper fractional scaling! I hate Wayland for forcing vsync in games! Also I’m personally offended by Wayland promising me the world and not delivering it in 2016. You can’t stop the hate, that’s not the Linux community way. 🥲

TheGrandNagus,

I don’t actually disagree with your points in the slightest, but you’re just shouting into the wind.

This won’t stop people from blaming Wayland for everything from Nvidia’s crappy drivers to their wife calling for a divorce.

The best you can do is comprehensively rebut people spewing nonsense, save the comment, then Ctrl+C + Ctrl+V when the next neckbeard comes along and cries about the Linux desktop being different now to how it was in 2006.

Hopefully enough people will do the same.

Your post calling for peoplpe to contribute something of value to the discussion contributes nothing of value to the discussion. This comment adds to the noise by pointing it out. Such is the way of Internet forums since time immemorial.
