Dagamant,

You realize how sad that statement is, right?

Dagamant,

It was one post on Reddit. It had a ton of comments but it isn’t a huge number of players mad about it. It was in a piracy sub and still most of the comments were along the lines of “Why didn’t you migrate your account during the 3ish years they were emailing people who hadn’t done it?” And the rest were either “DRM bad” or “Just pirate it, it’s not hard.”

Not really a news worthy thing. People had more than enough time and warning to move their account and the people who didn’t have nothing to stand on other than misplaced anger. I’m not a fan of Microsoft but they really did handle the migration well and gave people way more time and notice than they needed to.

Dagamant,

The Linux-libre Wikipedia entry sums it up pretty well:

“According to the Free Software Foundation Latin America, Linux-libre is a modified version of the Linux kernel that contains no binary blobs, obfuscated code, or code released under proprietary licenses.[7] In the Linux kernel, they are mostly used for proprietary firmware images. While generally redistributable, binary blobs do not give the user the freedom to audit, modify, or, consequently, redistribute their modified versions. The GNU Project keeps Linux-libre in synchronization with the mainline Linux kernel.[8]”

Basically; some stuff in the kernel is either not free or not open but is included for convenience.

From Windows to about 6 recommended distros for gaming.

I am not bad with computers and have a beginner+, maybe intermediate level knowledge of Linux and I kept running into some problems here and there with different distros. Most claimed to work out of the box (which may be the case for some users, but I have a shit ass Nvidia 1060 and that was not at all the case, until I...

Dagamant,

Yeah, POP has its nvidia version that comes with it installed. I was using that til I switched to AMD and just reinstalled the OS instead of dealing with removing the nvidia stuff.

Dagamant,

You would think so but that didn’t work

[Question] Why is Matrix mentioned more often than XMPP in self hosted forums?

I’m looking into hosting one of these for the first time. From my limited research, XMPP seems to win in every way, which makes me think I must be missing something. Matrix is almost always mentioned as the de-facto standard, but I rarely saw arguments why it is better than XMPP?...

Dagamant,

Its newer.

Dagamant,

Im 100% with you. If I were going to set one up it would probably be XMPP. However I havent dug into the features of each to do a proper analysis on which would suit my needs because I have no need for a chat service right now.

Dagamant,

Spoken like a true League of Legends player

What distro should I use on my potato?

I have an HP Stream 11 that I want to use for word processing and some light web browsing - I’m a writer and it’s a lightweight laptop to bring to the library or coffee shop to write on. Right now it’s got Windows and it’s unusable due to lack of hard drive space for updates. Someone had luck with Xubuntu, but it’s...

Dagamant,

I second Debian with LXDE. I run it on much older hardware with no issue.

Dagamant,

I didn’t know that. I usually recommend LXDE because I have used it for a really long time. LXQt is also a great option, I haven’t used it in a few years but I remember it being nice and lite.

Dagamant,

You have to go a bit further and remove any package manager and customized utilities. Probably remove a bunch of scripts and aliases from the command environment as well.

How do we know if there aren't a bunch of more undetected backdoors?

I have been thinking about self-hosting my personal photos on my linux server. After the recent backdoor was detected I’m more hesitant to do so especially because i’m no security expert and don’t have the time and knowledge to audit my server. All I’ve done so far is disabling password logins and changing the ssh port....

Dagamant,

While others are saying “no one cares about your personal photos” personal info is not the target of backdoor attacks like this. It’s more likely an attempt to get access to lots of processing power for a crypto mine or botnet.

It’s best practice to have the minimum packages required to run whatever service you are running, don’t add other stuff that you won’t be using. Using a distro that is “outdated” like Debian stable can help since the packages have had more time out in the wild to be tested.

I am sure that the xz incident has raised a lot of alarms across many projects.

Dagamant,

Of course they think the election was stolen, they tried like mad to steal it and failed so it’s obvious that someone stole harder than them.

Dagamant,

Nice, now do it with risc v too. Arm is cool and all but I really want to see some risc come back into the market.

Dagamant,

The duration is different depending on where you view it. I will be in an area where totality will last 4 minutes and 20 seconds so I have a different plan of action.

Dagamant,

It really depends on which features you are looking for. If you just want a solid editor with layers and plugins then gimp is pretty good. You can also try Krita for something a little less cumbersome.

Unfortunately most of the really nice editors are closed source and only mac/windows

Dagamant,

They are absolute garbage with wine. I think the only version that worked was the very first release.

Dagamant,

These guys are the kind we need more of. Dwarf Fortress is very much a labor of love and well worth the price on Steam. They have over 20 years of development put into it and even though the steam version got a fresh coat of paint, the text mode version is still free.

Anyone curious about Dwarf Fortress should check out Kruggsmash on Youtube. He has been making Dwarf Fortress videos for years and really does a good job of revealing the stories that evolve during gameplay.

Dagamant,

Most problems I run into with Linux are caused by me doing weird things. Linux doesn’t prevent you from messing with things you don’t understand but if you just want to use it as a standard desktop then you shouldn’t have many issues aside from finding replacement applications for things you are used to using.

If you decide to start tinkering, just keep a backup of your home directory since it contains all your settings and files.

Dagamant,

This year I went back to 100% Linux for my computers. I’ve kept my primary PC with Windows just for games but with the advancements that Proton has made to WINE it hasn’t been necessary. The only thing I miss in being able to use Affinity Publisher and Designer on the computer and not just my tablet.

Dagamant,

Last time I did it was 2008 or 2009, the only game I played much was World of Warcraft and it ran great under WINE at the time. I don’t remember exactly why I switched back to windows back then but it was probably games. I know I needed it when I got my VR headset back in 2016 but it’s been a while since I sold that. I don’t know if Steam VR works on Linux or not, I want to have a headset again.

Dagamant,

Imagine if adventure mode was Caves of Qud… If ever two small devs combined projects that is the one I would want to see.

Dagamant,

Not worth it regardless of the platform. I loved the Diablo games and this game was the end of that love.

Dagamant,

Being “not that bad” is still bad. It’s not worth the price.

Dagamant,

You could accomplish something in a 20 minute session of D3. You could get a rift done, maybe two, get enough stuff to upgrade something or find a better piece of equipment. You can’t get anything worthwhile done in D4 with only 20 minutes.
