FrostKing,

Quick question—does the kiss launch have the ability to hide apps? This is often a deal breaker for me with launchers

FrostKing,

I didn’t know this was so customizable, I’ll have to check it out.

FrostKing,

I know I’m very late to the party on this one

Don’t worry my guy, that’s the whole point of this subreddit :p

Games that still need more patience: what games released a year ago (or older) are you waiting for a sale on? Or that need another patch?

Other than a slew of Nintendo titles that maybe hopefully will come down in price (the patient gamers’ bane), I have my eye on the next time Divinity: Original Sin 2 goes on sale. A friend who never plays anything other than WoW loved playing Larian’s newest with me and I’m trying to get her to pick this up. Pretty sure...

FrostKing,

I’m still waiting for Cyberpunk to be cheap enough for me lol, I don’t get enough money to buy a game >$20

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

FrostKing,

I keep hearing people recommend signal messenger as an alternative to discord, and honestly that’s the most obvious sign you don’t actually use discord

FrostKing,

This is a totally wild card guess, but I imagine obsidian probably has a community hand writing extension

FrostKing,

Recently discovered Veloren, maybe you haven’t heard of it

FrostKing,

For RSS I recommend twine—not sure if it’s available on Mac os though. That’s always going to be a struggle with foss stuff, support for Mac is lacking because the people making them tend not to use macs

FrostKing,

You know, I always forget that

FrostKing,

Recently installed Linux (Nobara to be specific) and I’m amazed this isn’t talked about more. It’s so useful! Windows is seriously missing out not having a program like this built in.

FrostKing,

Unless you’re incredibly deep into technical functions, Krita is 100% the way to go. Gimp is not horrible, but I have a bias against it, because i found it ridiculously unintuitive and hard to learn to use

New to Linux—Epic Games compatibility? (Plus more)

I’m thinking of installing Linux (think I’m going to use Nobara) on my new budget gaming PC, and my biggest worry is video games compatibility. I have most of my games on Steam and Epic. Some on GOG, and some on Itch. I know a bit about steam compatibility, but not much about the rest. Is this something I need to worry...

FrostKing,

Thanks! I’ve heard of that before, but didn’t have a reason to use it on Windows. I’ll try it out.

FrostKing,

Wow, I swear it wasn’t like that when I originally posted. Weird haha

FrostKing,

You are very correct. Nice to hear it’s been fixed, thanks!

FrostKing,

That’s so interesting to me, because as someone thinking about switching over to Linux after playing around with it a bit, one of my main motivations is the ability to customize the desktop like crazy. Personally I like the minimal modern look, but I like that you can make it anything you want.

FrostKing,

Some people might disagree with me, but Celeste.

FrostKing,

Can you not simply turn that off on most smart watches? Actual question, I haven’t owned one in a while

FrostKing,

It’s important to note that we can essentially do this because we’re providing aid to Israel. In my mind it’s sort of the best of a horrible situation, but at least with us aiding them, we can insist on certain conditions. Rare Biden W, in my mind.

New to Linux? Ubuntu Isn’t Your Only Option (www.howtogeek.com)

Ubuntu’s popularity often makes it the default choice for new Linux users. But there are tons of other Linux operating systems that deserve your attention. As such, I’ve highlighted some Ubuntu alternatives so you can choose based on your needs and requirements—because conformity is boring.

FrostKing,

As a noobie to Linux I have a question: I decided to try ubuntu (haven’t yet) because of what I think is called the Gnome Desktop Environment, which from what I understand is what gives it all of those sleek animations and tab switcher and stuff. Am I correct about this? Or do all distros have this? I care a lot about aesthetics and stuff like that—the main reason I’m interested in Linux, other than learning about something new, is the idea of being able to fully customize the look and feel

FrostKing,

Thanks a lot

FrostKing,

Thanks! Mint was my other choice, so knowing I can use that on either frees me up a little bit

FrostKing,

I don’t run Linux (though I’m admittedly more interested in it than I used to be) but the reddit API stuff definitely made me learn more about foss, and value it more.

FrostKing,

Interesting to know that steam, gog, and epic (specifically) all work well for you, I’ve heard mixed results with Epic, some say it doesn’t work. Maybe I’ve gotten wrong info.

I have an older laptop, and as soon as I can upgrade to something better, I’m going to use it as a Linux practice.

FrostKing,

I was startled by how dated Zelda 1 is. I know, obviously it’s very old, but people talk about it as if it still holds up today… It doesn’t. Maybe I could try Zelda 2 now.

FrostKing,

Thanks a lot, I’ll definitely look into that!

And also wow, that graphics hack actually looks pretty good. I don’t tend to be a fan of pixel art graphics packs, cause they make them look weird and smooth, but that one is well done.

FrostKing,

Okay, perhaps not then. Thanks for the reply

FrostKing,

Last finished was Super Metroid. Tons of fun

FrostKing,

Currently playing a classic: Pokemon Emerald. Really solid.

FrostKing,

Might make a pixel art style icon—will report back if it looks any good!

Really quick try, and I am a very early beginner, but figured it couldn’t hurt. Might try out some other ideas as well

FrostKing,

That’d have to be Metroid: Zero Mission and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. Two of some of the only games I actually 100%.

FrostKing,

Re-Logic have always been my favorite group of devs in the industry. This is yet another item to add to my long list of reasons for that.

Putting their money where their mouth is.
