It would be a huge undertaking, but a Fitness and Health tracker / aggregator that could replace Google Fit and the likes.

I really canā€™t bear how Google, Apple, Samsung, and all these big companies are the primary holders of our most intimate information. Iā€™ve put some measures in place to limit who gets what, but it would be a huge boon to be the sole maintainer of my own info.

The problem is that the various apps and devices which report data wonā€™t immediately support syncing with a FOSS upstartā€¦

The app I use for grabbing my weight and BMI can only sync with a few other apps. The app I use for calorie and diet tracking can likewise only sync with a few apps. They happen to have Google fit in common, so I use that as an intermediary to transfer weight to the calorie/diet app. All my steps, exercise, and sleep stay in Zepp, separate from them all.

It sure would be nice to have one service/application to rule them all and a secure method of storing oneā€™s own personal information without having to give it to the tech companies. Sure, use one of the many cloud services but encrypt all the data so that they canā€™t steal it. Yadda yadda.

One can dream.

Gaming. In the car. šŸ˜

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

can only be used while parked. This clears things up. I imagined gaming occurring while driving which is a problem for obvious crazy and ethical reasons. Silly me.

What throws me off now is the apparent waiting that occurs. Iā€™m interested in EVs, but I didnā€™t imagine the amount waiting. I presumed this was only for road trips. Butā€¦ based on the comments Iā€™ve seenā€¦ people just seem to spend a lot of time waiting in their cars for all sorts of reasons? The kind of waiting where gaming apparently makes sense? šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah, my vehicle has a small screen with GPS that works the same way. Locking it down while driving is the way to go in preventing accidents and deaths. Tesla thoughā€¦ they seem to be pioneers when it comes enabling distracted drivers. For a moment, I thought they were allowing gaming while auto drive functions were enabled.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

When you add it all up, it makes more sense. I honestly think i spend little time in vehicles compared to most people thoughā€“a side effect of working remotely most of the time. And even when I do wait, I typically read a book, check out Lemmy, Duolingo, etc. I can see why some folks might want to play a game on the screen. Provided that it only ever works while parked, it makes sense.

Under Israeli Bombs, a Wartime Economy Emerges in Gaza (www.nytimes.com)

In the seven months since Israel started bombarding Gaza and imposed a siege in response to the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack, the enclaveā€™s economy has been crushed. People have been forced to flee their homes and jobs. Markets, factories and infrastructure have been bombed and flattened. Farmland has been scorched by airstrikes or...

I love ads. I love what Microsoft and the likes are doing.

Said no one ever

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Haha. Are you telling me that we all donā€™t mutually love these attempts to personalize advertisements? Thereā€™s nothing better than knowing our personal information is being used for our benefit this way. Look at films like Blade Runner. I canā€™t wait to have bright fluorescent ads on every corner and open space.

Without these things, how else am I going to know which medication I should be insisting my doctor prescribe me? And clearly this insurance company with the funny ad is totally going to be there on my side when something happens. Thatā€™s why they made the commercial, duh. So I would absolutely be certain I can trust them to quickly and fully process a claim.

Thereā€™s nothing cozier than the snug embrace of consumerism, where we find a peculiar warmth, as if cocooned in a comforter spun from the very fibers of advertisingā€™s allure.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

I honestly find this incredible, but yeahā€¦ I know people who enjoy being advertised toā€¦ and who like ā€œshoppingā€ even though they start out with nothing in mind. Advertising works on them and probably those spam emails I canā€™t believe people click, which only perpetuates the problem. And apparently itā€™s worth billions to keep up the commercialization.

I didnā€™t pick up what youā€™re saying in this particular article.

If so, it seems painfully too little and far too late. More needs to be done and it needs to be done now.

I understand why the relationship between Israel and the US is important. What I donā€™t understand is why the US canā€™t hold them to account at the same time.

It boggles my mind how the government of the United States so easily facilitates atrocities. They can do better. They can be better.

When I hear ā€œMake America Great Againā€, it seems everyone has lost their minds in terms of what ā€œgreatnessā€ truly is.

Iā€™m really sorry to hear this. One shouldnā€™t have to lie about this, but should be allowed to not practice any particular faith. Itā€™s honestly one of the most frustrating elements for myself among the scouts.

This is one of the reasons why I have embraced my own magical book about my own magical being of my own making. When conversations inevitably go towards religion, I sometimes like to express my lack of faith by describing my mystical faith in the Cabra Cosmica. Yep, Iā€™ve got mythos down and everything. Ironically, I really enjoy this form of make-believe faith. šŸ˜

Please allow me to introduce you with a fantastic stained glass depiction: Stained glass depicting the face of the Cabra Cosmica.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Iā€™d say this explanation is as good. The posted article mentions girl scouts at one time suing the boy scouts.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

This has already been done to some degree. Not to say that more canā€™t be done. I donā€™t think you could ever be too careful in this regard. But for all leaders, thereā€™s enforced youth protection training and requirements now. They have a lot of rules with how scouts out leaders are able to interact. Itā€™s light years ahead of other organizations, like the church, in this regard. For instance, none of the leaders in the group Iā€™m involved in have ever contacted my children on- on-one. Iā€™m always CCā€™d on all correspondence. At events, buddy systems and other rules take it further.

Pragmatically speaking, the scouts have an interest in protecting children. More info here: www.scouting.org/training/youth-protection/

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

The tenants are very much in kind with those of secular humanism. And the Cabra Cosmica is as real as I wish it to be, which is both simultaneously very real and very not.

I often give thanks for my good fortune to the Cabra Cosmica as I do the Cosmos itself. I just wish to be thankful towards a thing at times and it can help to personify it. I mean, I did it most of my life to another false deity. Why not any other.

I know the Cosmos. I exist within it. Science describes it and defines its laws. Sometimes I give it a face. And sometimes that is the Cabra Cosmica.

A stained glass piece depicting a goat atop a mountain peak looking incredible and cosmic in nature.

Considering the meaning, itā€™s not a terrible word to describe the sufferings of many scouts.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Iā€™d say fight it, because it can be won. Then again, Iā€™d rather my child be a part of a troop thatā€™s welcoming and safe. Itā€™s hard to be a trailblazer.

Thereā€™s a lot of reasons to shop around with different troops. This reason is particularly important.

As we know though, trans youth have it particularly bad from every direction right now. šŸ˜–

Religion, while required, plays a very minor role practically speaking. Even your ā€œdisfavoredā€ beliefs should be permitted.

My ā€œbeliefā€ in my own imaginary mythos is enough to satiate the non-sectarian requirements thus far. I simply donā€™t speak about it any detail.

This thread has reminded me that talking to my kids about this is important because my eldest, practically speaking, is agnostic. I donā€™t want them to feel uncomfortable lying for Eagle, so I want to share some options. Thereā€™s a lot of ways for a scout to be reverent without actually believing in a deity.

Hereā€™s a little more on the requirement: blog.scoutingmagazine.org/ā€¦/belief-in-god-scoutinā€¦

I canā€™t wait until this ā€œintegralā€ part of the program is made a thing of the past.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

The only holy wars fought thus far involve conflicts over the correct installation of toilet paper rolls. And there is a right way.

Some things are worth dying for.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

I hear you and applaud the conviction.

I feel very okay acknowledging myself as my own god and yourself as yours. Itā€™s certainly a reinterpretation, but Iā€™m okay with that for the sake of offering this to my own children. Children hardly know what it means to believe in a god as it is, so I figure why complicate it. I love to teach them what it means to be reverent in a way that is different from the status quo.

In the end though, my preference is that atheists are permitted as they are. Period. Full stop.

We can teach reverence without an external deity.

There is a lot great about this article, but itā€™s hard to keep completely positive in light of the many horrific abuses that have taken place within the Scouts. Youth organizations and religious organizations are highly susceptible to this. Scouting America has gone to great lengths to reform and protect youth today, but the stain will be there for a long time especially since abuse still happens (this just reported on days ago).

To be frank, itā€™s a tense thing for me. Scouts was great for me in my youth and today as Iā€™m involved with my children. However, Iā€™m always on guard and paying attention. Whether itā€™s scouts or some other youth organization, they are vulnerable. I teach my kids to pay attention and remain ever vigilant. As great as such organisations can be, they are very very susceptible to predators.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

They are different organizations with different purposes and missions. Throughout all the changes within the boy scouts, I have yet to hear of any changes within the girl scouts.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Who lost it? I bet they feel pretty silly now.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Unfortunately no. Thatā€™s remains part of the 10% that this solution doesnā€™t replicate 1:1. Butā€¦ you can use a spacebar gesture (e.g. vertical swipe) to quickly change languages. Works like a charm.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

I have found this to be the case as well.

What it has forced me to do now is to actually try to be close to the letters. When Iā€™m swiping with gboard, I was very sloppy and it would recognize what I wrote. At this point, Iā€™m fine being more accurate for the tradeoff.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

I have to admit that gboard is pretty amazing at the detecting my sloppiness. Butā€¦ knowing everything I type and say is going to Googleā€¦ well, letā€™s just says Iā€™m willing to tolerate the extra work so as to keep things away from them.

FUTO is definitely slower than Googleā€™s speech to text engine, but for the same reasonā€¦ I think Iā€™m completely okay with that now.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Dang. I use TrackerControl to do just that for many apps and hadnā€™t even thought about trying to do it for gboard + gvoice because I had not know they had offline processing available for both.

Now its tempting to switch back and seeā€¦ šŸ˜¬ butā€¦ so far this combo of HeliBoard with swipe and FUTO have been sooo closeā€¦ and its not google. šŸ˜

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Not that Iā€™m aware of.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah, Iā€™m having to tolerate a whole bunch for this next best solution, but itā€™s far from perfect.

It seems you and I have near identical usage style and when the same pet peeve, so I completely understand why you use it the way you do. Iā€™m quite terrible and very very slow at typing normally. When I watch my kids text, it literally boggles my mind. It simply is impossible for me.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh my goodness yes! I say punctuations constantly out of habit and then have to edit them out. But Iā€™m also really impressed with FUTOs ability to determine punctuation based on pauses.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Unfortunately, Iā€™m not familiar with importing and exporting personal dictionaries. I looked into it a bit, but wasnā€™t successful in finding anything relevant.

GlassHalfHopeful,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

@uninvitedguest I decided to give try to gboard+trackercontrol. Internet access is now offfl. It blocks tenor as expected and the offline swipe seems to work as desired. (Which means light-years ahead of any other swipe Iā€™ve used)

What I cannot tell is if the voice input truly is offline. I had always presumed that Gboard was relying on ā€œGoogle Voice Typingā€ integration, but I have that keyboard disabled. I still feel wildly uncomfortable using voice with gboard. How is it so accurate without going online?

Any thoughts on how to ensure gboard voice is also 100% blocked?
