Do we have any reasonable/substantive speculation about why they canceled the bigger die in the 8000 series?

The issue i think is that it reinforces the belief that Nvidia cards are faster and that AMD cards are cheap/budget,

AMD cards being just as fast (besides RT) with good/better value is one thing, but AMD being slower is a harder misconception to unravel

The RDNA 2 vs Ampere generation featured the 6900 XT vs the 3090 in a really competitive showdown.

The RDNA 3 vs Ada generation sees AMD compete really strongly everywhere except the very very top. The 7900 XTX is cheaper and faster at raster than the 4080 and 4080 Ti in most cases (with worse efficiency and RT), for instance. You can make a competitive argument for either company at each pricing segment except Nvidia below $200 and AMD at the very very top.

That's a farrrr cry from "the 8700 XT competes with the 5070, but past that there's no AMD card"

It's reminiscent of the RDNA 1 vs Turing, where the 6700 XT and 2070 were competitive but AMD had no answer for the 2080, let alone the 2080 Ti, except this time it'll be more obvious since they'll be a 5090 as well.

Hell yeah. Finally some gaming news i care about.

If you listen closely you can hear every Ryu main preparing to drop him like a hit rock. We'll see if Ken and Luke mains persevere

He looks scary enough but I'm curious how he'll end up feeling to fight against as a Marisa main.

They appear to have nailed the vibe/aesthetic though. That new Raging Demon looks excellent.

Semi-Portable Engineering Rig

Hey Lemmy, I need some recommendations for a CPU-intensive slightly mobile rig. I run a lot of engineering simulations and I need a computer that I can move between my home and work on a semi-frequent basis. I’m looking for something more powerful than a laptop and I’ll have monitors/peripherals at both locations. Maybe a...

For a case? I've had a fantastic time with my Hyte Revolt 3 It's ITX, fits 240 AIOs and water cooling easily and even custom loops if you're careful about part choice.

It comes with a sturdy carrying handle, is easy to build in, and has been rugged enough to through into a (hard shell) carry-on bag and take with me on work trips.

For CPU choice, why Intel over AMD? The AMD chips usually have lower TDPs. In your case, because you're looking for max single core instead of max multi core, you can look at second tier chips like Ryzen 7800 or Intel 14700 which usually pair 95% of the core speed with 70% of the heat and 70% of the cores. Undervolting is also an option, and AMD makes that easier.

As far as CPU wattage and heat, there's always some kind of tradeoff. It'll be audible but with the right cooler and CPU you can keep it manageable

What's the best graphics card thats worth getting to upgrade an older PC?

My PC is getting on a little, it’s running on an i7-4790k, 16gb ddr4, and a GTX 970. right now, it’s struggling some in most games even though I don’t play any triple A titles. What would be a sensible upgrade that wouldn’t get totally bottlenecked by the CPU?...

Do you have an upgrade budget?
With a 4790k You're looking at PCIe 3.0,

a Radeon RX 6600, 6650 XT, or 7600 are all good 8GB VRAM cards for under $250 that will last for a long time at 1080p.

VRAM concerns really only occur at higher resolutions, so for you any modern card (2022 or newer) will be a massive upgrade. The 6600 can be had for $180 these days

But even you're not planning to upgrade CPU right now, i would just buy the best GPU you can fit in your budget, and do worry about bottlenecks. One day you'll upgrade CPU/MB/RAM and the GPU will fit right in.

Yeah i agree with this.

The RX 6600 is the best ultra budget (under $200) upgrade, though the RX 6650 XT and RX 7600 project to last longer as viable upgrades and are still under $250.

The 6600 is slightly weaker than the 5700 XT which is still a valid card today

Need help with my husbands pc

My husband recently upgraded to an AM4 platform. His issue is that there is no display. The gpu fans look like they are trying to start, but cannot. Additionally, there is no POST sound and the power button, while able to turn on the pc, will not turn it off. The lights on the motherboard work, as do the cpu fans and case fans....

That cpu doesn't have integrated graphics, but if you try it without a GPU do you at least get a POST beep?

Do you know if the PSU is good?

I recognize that with the age of this post you've either figured it out or moved on but I'd still be curious about what happened next
