Sunny,

I personally went with a P15 model and have been beyond happy with mine. Got that numpad too 🙌

Any good email service except tutamail and proton ?

I am now using disroot . I don’t care about anonymity or anything as I just wanna use it to connect to my bank, ID and buy/book shit etc. Which all have my phone number, address, name etc anyway so no point in that . I just want the security privacy to be good enough that no one can easily hack it, steal my OTP, inbox etc and...

Sunny,

Wow I was so confused while reading this haha, got me good there! Happy to hear its working as expected :P

Sunny,

Ente really keeps on giving and improving their services, very happy to be a customer!

Sunny,

Sorry, was the only way to share the app. I know it’s not optimal, personally I use Aurora Store to grab it.

Sunny,

I’m guessing the local llms

Privacy focused Podcast recommendations?

After the podcast show https://inteltechniques.com/podcast.html stopped putting out episodes, I’ve been on the lookout for other ones. Just stumbled upon The Lockdown (Practical Privacy & Security) and it seems rather good based on the first episode I listened to so thought i’d share it. But am still looking for more as I am...

Sunny,

I second Ente, absolutely awesome products and great Devs always listening to feedback from community. Unlike other services and products, absolutely everything is open source to 🙌

Sunny,

Can also use tools such as Exodus to evalute the trackers/permissions(manifest file) that the application has baked in; reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/455252/

18+ What are the differences between the 'base' of various Linux distributions?

I’ve been using linux desktop for a year or so now. One noteable thing i keep seeing is that one person will say I dont like XYZ distrobution because of its base. But I am still a little unsure what is meant by it. I am assuming the main difference between each base is the choice of package management(?). But what other...

Sunny,

Been keeping my eye on this one for a while! Very happy to see it steadily progress, can’t wait to try this out! 🙌

Sunny,

It’s a planned integration but not available atm, afaik

Sunny,

They want this so that they can boost their player numbers, as well as tracks users on what they’re playing.

Sunny,

Very Neat! Saving this to my wishlist 🙌

Sunny,

As far as I have understood it those are two different things; Cookie lifetime(locally on your device), as well as the servers cookie, reffered to as company/vendors retention period, e.g. how long they are allowed to keep your data for.

Sunny, (edited )

I did, all I found was how to define the cookielife time by yourself, not what the default value is… :<

I found this thread discussing it, they found the maximum lifespan to be around 400 days for the different browsers. However Google Docs state that it can be longer than 400 days if specified correctly. discourse.mozilla.org/t/…/5

Sunny,

Ok good to know, it does seem like there is some standard across browsers for a maximum cookie lifetime of 400 at least.

Do you have a cookie extension in specifc you would recommend?

Sunny,

Sunny,

Thanks for sharing, wasn’t aware of this channel yet. A lot of very relevant videos for me to watch forward 😊

Sunny,

Thanks I might try this! However does this allow for reads/writes from the system? Considering this is a folder for games, the files are constantly changing, such as the game save files etc…

Sunny,

Yeah actually this was more simple thanI had imagined, I simply changed it so that the owner(me) can only view the folder and not edit. Which totally works in my use case. Thought it would have been more difficult than just changing this tbh, thanks!

Sunny,

Thanks for the explanation, I luckily solved this with just “basic” changes of permissions in dolphin actually haha, but defo good to know that chattr has these capabilities for future references. Appriciate it 🌻

Sunny,

Definitely a very valid point! I have a server I can back up to aswell, just gotta set it up as you say 👌

Sunny,

They became independent again last year!

Sunny,

You probably shouldnt tbh. I don’t think Waterfox is any better, it’s just less strict in terms of the defaults. Think Waterfox caters best to those who want the Firefox feel but without the telemetry.

Sunny,

Hehe all good 😇

Sunny,

Definitely a very valid point!

Sunny,

I don’t view the ghacks.net article as badpress myself after reading it. Also the System1 deal, which is no longer a thing, is the same company who bought Startpage, which is still recommended over at privacyguides.org

Sunny,

not excluding Librewolf, just sharing options.

Sunny,

It’s about having options, not excluding any other projects at all. Yes Librewolf is great, but for some, like myself, its too strict.

Are we going to see arch based immutable distros in the near future?

Hi there folks, I’m still learning about Linux and have yet to dip my toes properly in any arch based distro. Have for the moment fallen in love with the immutable distros based on Universal Blue project. However I do want to learn about what arch has to offer to and plan on installing default arch when I have time. But have...

Sunny,

Thanks very much for the detailed response - this was very insightful!

Sunny,

Essentially: read-only system files.

In immutable distros, you or any other programs that are installed on the system cannot modify the system files. That includes the system configuration files as well as applications. Its goal is to solve the problem of an entity gaining admin privlieges to your system and cause loads of damage. There are some addtional benefits too:

  • Updates apply at reboot
  • Root partition is read-only
  • Considered very secure
  • Sandboxed applications via flatpaks, snaps and appimages.
Sunny,

It all boils down to user preferences right. Some users prefer the maxium amount of control, while others, including myself, only use the pc for gaming and browsing, so I’d rather have a system that cannot be broken by myself and not deal with updates etc…

Sunny,

lol

Sunny,

Have actually tried it! And while I love the concept and how it works, its a bit too much to learn for me at the moment. It’s defo something I am going to pick up again in the future though! Also amazed me exactly how many more packages it had available than the AUR, mind blowing.

Sunny,

Its honestly not that bad installing apps on these distros. Yeah the main one is flatpak, secondly appimages as easy as ever, and any other app can be installed via distrobox and exported if needed. If not that, then apps can also be layered onto the system if needed.

Ultimately it boils down to user preferences, but considering the growth and popularity of Immutable versions of distros, I would be surprised to not see a few more attempts from the Arch side of Linux.

Sunny,

Thanks for insight!

Building a brand new machine and leaving Windows for good

I’m sick of Windows, and especially what it’s become, and the way its trending looks like it will only get worse. I’ll be building a brand new PC this summer and want to choose a Linux Distro instead. In preparation, I’d like to try out a virtual machine with a Linux distribution. I am solidly familiar with Ubuntu, but I...

Sunny,

I second Bazzite! I daily drive this for my gaming and every browsing, with some occasional forensic analysis. It’s really really great!!

Are there any recommended resources for studying for RCSA and RHCE Certifications?

Hi there, I will be taking, Red Hat Certified System Administrator and Red Hat Certified Engineer Certifications after the summer and am looking for some worthwhile resources to learn from. Anyone have any recommendations for this? I will get access to some “offical” resources from my work later, but want to brush up - up...

Sunny,

I wouldn’t see why not? Ur getting 22 books at the price of what one or two of them would have cost normally. Imo it’s a bargain and as someone who’s starting to work in cloud / open source within the next few months I’m defo happy to see this deal available! Have also had really good experiences with the books published by no starch press 🙌

Sunny,

Yeah that is always the scary part these days… Do u know if that was specific to No Starch press?
