alsimoneau,

1000$ in rent! Where are you living that is so cheap?

Do you think people would be okay with 'Recall' if Apple did it?

With the recent WWDC apple made some bold claims about privacy when it comes to so called Apple Intelligence. This makes me wonder if they did something to what Microsoft did with Recall feature, would people be less concerned and to an extend praise their effort?...

alsimoneau,

I honestly don’t understand the use case. What do you find interesting about it?

alsimoneau,

Recall won’t help with that. You also don’t need an AI for the second one. Just something more than a basic shell.

alsimoneau,

I feel like those can be solved already by searching through your emails/browser history.

Biden Administration Tightens Mileage Standards to Buoy E.V.s | The new rule requires automakers to achieve an average of 65 miles per gallon across all models by 2031. (www.nytimes.com)

The new standards require American automakers to increase fuel economy so that, across their product lines, their passenger vehicles would average 65 miles per gallon by 2031, up from 48.7 miles today. The average mileage for light trucks, including pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, would have to reach 45 miles per...

alsimoneau,

I think the point is that EVs are at 0L/100km, therefore lowering the average.

alsimoneau,

I landed on oh-my-bash, zoxide and some other utilities. It really improved my terminal experience.

alsimoneau,

I don’t dislike their wraps, and they’re easy to eat while driving. That’s about all the positive I can say.

alsimoneau,

You finished it in 70 hours!

Damn, I’ve been at it for 700 and I still don’t have eclipse 8 on everyone.

alsimoneau,

100 hours is a major investment. For me a game was worth it if I spent less than 1$/hour.

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I’m working on a some materials for a class wherein I’ll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we’re including a section we’re calling “foot guns”. Basically it’s ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

alsimoneau,

Yeah at this point I’ve aliased ‘rm’ to nothing and exclusively use ‘trash’.

alsimoneau,

Alias rm to echo and install trash. Saved me many times.

alsimoneau,

That sounds great but I don’t want to keep the ‘rm’ muscle memory in case I’m on another computer and delete something important. Having to use ‘trash’ instead makes you more conscious when it errors out.

alsimoneau,

Perma DST would mean really dark mornings in the winter, and the lack of sunlight in the morning has major health impacts, especially for teens.

alsimoneau,

It’s sad that such measures are needed because some people want others to suffer.

alsimoneau,

A lot of people are telling you to not use manjaro and to use endeavour instead. I’ve been using manjaro for 6 years and it’s fine, in the end they offer very similar user experience.

For package management, I do everything with yay now. Just calling it on it’s own will update everything, with keywords it will search and ask you what to install. The only flag you have to know is -R to uninstall.

For the shell bash is perfectly fine, but if you want more features take a look at ohmybash.

alsimoneau,

I’ve been running it on my work laptop for 6 years at this point and I’ve had no major issues I couldn’t solve.

Having said that, I recently switched my gaming rig over to endeavour and it’s been great.

alsimoneau,

I can’t think of a large open world game I liked. Skyrim, RDR2, the new Assassin’s Creeds, Biomutant, Horizon Zero Dawn, GTA5. I feel like they sacrifice the story to fill a world with so many random side quests that it seems like I’ll never be able to finish it. I miss games that I could complete in less than 25 hours of playtime.

alsimoneau,

I’ve never finished Witcher 3, bit I did like it. Still waiting on a good discount to try cyberpunk.

alsimoneau,

I liked the early game, but my interest fizzled out by the time I got to the large city out west.

alsimoneau,

I’ll keep that in mind! Thanks!

alsimoneau,

I personally feel like I have to fight Windows more and more to have it behave like I want it to. You still spend time to configure your Linux of choice, but it doesn’t feel adversary.

What are some alternative to soulless videogame franchises?

What I mean is… sometimes people are very loyal to a videogame franchise or a company because they loved a game they released years ago (Silent Hill/Konami with Silent Hill 2, Blizzard/Bethesda with their respective golden eras, some could argue this happens too with Pokémon and Final Fantasy, etc). Ethical/consumer reasons...

alsimoneau,

Just here to plug Captain of Industry if you like factory games.

alsimoneau,

Fair enough, I’m hooked but it is different in some fundamental ways.

alsimoneau,

I’m using an anonymous browser and for me often DDG has better results than Google now. My Google-fu used to be on point but recently I can’t seem to find sites that aren’t SEO traps.
