huh, wouldn’t have thought another lily/sofle-like makes sense to offer, but ig i’m too far removed from commercially available layouts to really have a reasonable intuition 😅

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

fancy features i enjoy a lot:

  • home row mods
  • numpad layer
  • nav layer with arrows, home, end, pg up/dn, vol/brightness controls
  • backspace on combo
  • ctrl+backspace on combo
  • del on combo
  • capsword feature
  • layer-taps on all thumb keys
  • vertical combos for parenthetical symbols (although that may not be very usable on rowstagger boards)

Oh they work perfectly for me :) Very keycap dependent, though! I personally use and recommend DES on MX and CS on choc (both by Pseudoku, stls for 3dp available).

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

it’s just the legends, i’m not typing katakana with it 😅

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

when ignoring the tucky thumb keys it’s quite nice :)

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

I only soldered the mcu module and the hs sockets. Usually also prefer seperate mcu board for flexibility and repairability

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Wow, awesome! I love how different it looks.

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Very cool! What are the points you’re not satisfied with?

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Not sure what layout OP is going for, but the Miryoku layout features lots of the usual ways people go to fit a full keymap (and more) into such small keebs :)

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

For getting that feeling folks often recommend printing out the layout and testing how comfortable it feels on paper (of course not gping to be 100% accurate but i’ve heard it helps a lot)

CB34S - A 34 Keys Columnar Staggered Board ft. Nice!View (lemmy.world)

CB34S is a 34 key column-staggered choc unibody keyboard that has wireless capabilities with the Nice!Nano and supports a Nice!View display. It’s my second attempt at a PCB design and I couldn’t have done it without the wonderful community....

My Journey From Mechanical to Ergonomic Keyboards | New ErgoMech Open Sourced (Kaly42) + Video! (iili.io)

Hello everyone! I recently open sourced the Kaly42, a cheap split Ergonomic Mechanical Keyboard and, to celebrate the occasion, have decided to tell the story of how I went from a standard mechanical keyboard to the CSTC40 and eventually to designing and building a new keyboard! The files are available here and the video here!...

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

There’s many keebs similar to what you’re describing! Check out for example the Lily58 or Sofle, available e.g. from splitkb.com.

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think i prefer one over the other (yet), Taipo is much more cumbersome for me still. But I really enjoy the different approach and what it gives us in terms of keymap optimization: Effectively removes considerations of rolls, SFBs, and alternation almost completetly!

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Yea, i’m also using light chocs here (pinks, which are 25g). Maybe i could even spring-swap them to 15g.

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

robins are rather heavy, but pinks are great! i can also recommend swapping in 25g springs with the robins. makes for a great light clicky switch.

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Just be careful to test whether they still return fine with 20g. I had quite a lot fail when i tried swapping in 15g springs :D

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, tbqh I’m also never entirely sure with pinks, light blues and purpz :D

At one point in time, someone also sold manually spring-swapped pinks, so maybe the 20g info is from that batch? Not entirely sure though…

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t find it any usable and just don’t use it at all 😅 I feel like there’s enough unused combo space left, no additional keys needed :)

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Very nice read, and I was reminded a lot of my own considerations starting out in the hobby. Looking forward to what comes next :)

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Haha, I’m also still trying to figure out whether it is for me. But I do know that aptmak on my 28-key zilpzalp is for me 😍

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

That is so nice to hear! 💚 Thank you :)

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

This is soo fancy! Absolutely fantastic :)

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Simple! Just copy them off the respective Wikipedia article 👍

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

very cool! I’ve been trying out Taipo on the UT22 recently and i really like the alternating strategy so rolls become basically irrelevant :)

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

yea, corne stagger is basically no stagger

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Wait, you socketed the controller and then put those sockets into more sockets?

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

I see. So you have two sets of sockets: soldered ones (those on your controller) and hot-swappable ones (those on your board), and you’ve stacked them. It will probably work fine, but the usual approach is using only one of these.

Example for the hot-swappable ones:

Hot-swappable sockets on board, pins on controller

Controller fitted into socket

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

The blue and white one is actually the hummingbird :) And yes, that’s a resin printed case

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Yup! Very nice prints :) I got it from keeb.supply btw, not my own print. (And they are getting the prints at JLC iirc)

TraceGallant, to ergomechkeyboards
@TraceGallant@kbin.social avatar

I might have an ergo problem

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Not OP, but I’ve been using an MX vertical for years and am super happy with it 😊

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

yup :)

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

nope :D

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Never tried canned mice 😼

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

To be quite honest, I’m not 100% sure how ergonomic this tiny thing is :D It sure is fun to type on it tho and I haven’t felt anything similar to the strain from using pain rectangles while / after using it for a few days.

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

this is the aptmak layout. I’m using it because i find it to be more comfortable than colemak, especially on my usual 28-key boards.

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Yea i can only recommend aptmak, super comfy!

In this build i have milky yellows, but i’m not super happy with them. My current favourites are the trash switch (linear) and kailh midnight pro yellows (semi-silent tactile).

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

True! Instead of one huge ass keyboard I now have 15 very small ones on my desk 🤓

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

It’s minimal choc spacing (while not cutting off stuff from the switches). To be honest I didn’t expect to be able to work so well with it but here we are :D

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Yup, I currently have v, z, and q on combos. You can also check my current keymap in the repo I linked above (in the example_keymaps directory).

I’ve been using this layout exclusively for a few months now, the initial learning curve was actually not that steep, since I had been on the Aptmak layout for a while before reducing it a bit to this state.

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

It’s very much functional :) But to be fair, the perspective does a lot in this picture. Close-up:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/0f8b0dd7-a597-4af4-8552-7dcc67dfa365.jpeg

apfel,
@apfel@lemmy.world avatar

Well I’ve been using it for a few days and very happy with it :)

And you’re right, it’s smaller than that! The spacing is 15mm x 15mm
