I mean, they did put up an official guide on how to use their cloud gaming on the Deck. But it would sure be nice if they enabled a way to play the games locally.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

The only way to get it on the Deck is with cloud gaming or by installing Windows.

I used to play Doom with keyboard only. Right hand on the arrow keys, while the left hand shot with Ctrl, ran with Shift, activated with Space and toggled strafing with Alt. I even played Descent with the arrow keys. It took me hours to get the perfect keybindings for that one down. I think I flew up and down with A and Z.

Jedi Knight was the first game I played with mouselook. Not with WASD, but with the numpad. I thought I was a genius for discovering that. I put my main force powers around that and probably switched weapons with the mouse wheel.

Can’t remember when I switched to WASD. Probably around Unreal or Half Life.

At least they are giving out the tools needed to keep it alive. Much better than most other games, especially those from big publishers.

Half Life is great and all. But both games have insanely long intros.

And in the end it just came down to sheer luck in what the shitty netcode decided was a hit.

Hasn’t it been a year since the first level was released? This is going to take a long time if they intend to make the whole game. And manage to dodge Disney’s lawyers until then.

Two games I never suspected to be in the same sentence.

Still kind of an assholish attitude to just assume the worst.

Which reminds me, what did we get for the 25th anniversary of Unreal, another super important game from 1998 whose engine nowadays even powers movie production?

Right, Epic pulled it from all stores…

Well, I’d pick a Steam Deck. But luckily Baldur’s Gate 3 is also available on the PS5. I’d really like to play that game blind again. It’s so wonderful to discover all the stuff. And when you’re done you have only found about 50 % of the content this game has to offer.

I’m just done with my third playthrough in which I would still see new stuff in every play-session. I’m gearing up for my fourth by playing Baldur’s Gate 2. I want to continue playing the same character in BG3. Not officially supported, but I want to play her with the same race and class and personality. I already know of some things I want to explore that I haven’t seen before. And I wonder what new unknown details I will find.

In case this is not a joke, Steam only runs on x86 processors. The Vita has an ARM processor. But I bet someone made some Linux that runs on the Vita. Just not with Steam games.

bjoern_tantau,

Would be hilarious if that was the release name of Deckard.

bjoern_tantau,

Nice. I would actually be tempted to sell my current one and get this. At least if I had money. Looks like they addressed most of the common complaints.

Baldur's Gate 3's Japan Release Removes Romping And Torture (www.thegamer.com)

Baldur's Gate 3's Japanese release is getting rid of some of Faerûn's best pastimes - excessive bonking and excessive violence. When the RPG hits the region on December 21, it will remove the ability to enable nudity, and will seemingly censor the sex scenes even further

They should make the Mindflayers more creative with their tentacles to compensate.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

As far as I know you can already buy the game via Steam or GOG over there. So I guess this is for the PS5 version.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Sure, but what about Omellum? And all the other Mindflayers? And the Nautiloid has plenty of tentacles as well. And we definitely deserve another way to subdue the Absolute.

Neil Newbon (Astarion) does as well. He once raided Devora’s Twitch just as she considered killing Astarion ::: spoiler Astarion’s backstory, although it’s already revealed in the character select screen with a stake. Instead she opted to bite everyone. :::

Please don’t make the suites ruin any future endeavors in that direction.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Luckily that is the case. I just hope that they don’t think that they need more control for some future project to squeeze out even more money.

Especially with the “tweaked” part. I only run Linux, but that 20 % number seems to be quite high. Did they tweak Windows as well? Guess I have to read the article.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

You should look for “game name open source”. That should yield good results. Or just looking at the games available in Linux distributions.

Every game from id until (including) Doom 3 was open sourced. So each one of them has such a project.

Off the top of my head there are projects for:

  • Doom 1-3
  • Quake 1-3
  • Wolfenstein 3D
  • Dark Forces 1-2 (and Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy)
  • Tomb Raider 1-3
  • Alien vs Predator (the old one from 99 or so)
  • Duke Nukem 3D (the 2D ones probably as well)
  • Commander Keen
  • Command & Conquer Red Alert (I think 2 as well)
  • Gothic 1-2
  • Morrowind
  • an absolute shitton of adventure games that run with ScummVM

Also one of the original goals of GOG was to revive good old games and make them run on modern systems out of the box. Often using one of the open source engines mentioned above. Plus DOSBox.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

A surprise to be sure. But a welcome one.

I wonder if they will do Jedi Knight next. Rumors were that its source code has been lost for quite a while.

Although, open source engines for both seem to be doing quite well and there have been some very impressive enhancement mods for Jedi Knight.

Judging from the video on Steam the sprites have been upscaled.

How about co-op multiplayer? I’ve seen a few of those for Baldur’s Gate 3. Like Neil Newbon or Jennifer English. Neil plays with his friend Tom (whose surname I have forgotten) and Jennifer with her girlfriend Aliona Baranova. Except for Tom all of them acted in the game.

zip or 7z for compressed archives. I hate that for some reason rar has become the defacto standard for piracy. It’s just so bad.

The other day I saw a tar.gz containing a multipart-rar which contained an iso which contained a compressed bin file with an exe to decompress it. Soooo unnecessary.

Edit: And the decompressed game of course has all of its compressed assets in renamed zip files.

bjoern_tantau,

I love this about the game. I got Gale only in my third run, as I didn’t trust the magic circle in my first one.

Let’s see how it is received. That game is not modern-gamer friendly.

But the even more important question: Did they keep the In Extremo concert in?

Edit: Read through the YouTube comments. Apparently it’s littered with bugs and the concert is gone. So I guess it’s a little bit true to the original release.

Thief 3’s Cradle level was formative in the way that I have never ever seen a better horror game. Overall I didn’t like the game as much as the previous two. But the Cradle is unsurpassed.

The demo for Alone in the Dark 1 also lives rent free in my head because it was one of the few games we had back then. Plus the graphics were absolutely astonishing. But I never knew how to finish it. I always died pretty quickly to some dog monster. I never played the full game.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

I didn’t even do the whole weapons puzzle. I just yanked it out of there and defeated the trap.

Although the temptation was big to let everyone except for Astarion die because he was right there.

I don’t get it when they rush to update a game that’s already looking very good. But they leave old games that could really benefit from an update by the side.

But I guess it must be worth it.
