d00phy, to privacy in What would you consider your threat model?

Awhile back, I got a bookbub deal alert email about a series called the Lattice Trilogy. When I read the synopsis, I wasn’t sure I’d buy the premise: a future where privacy simply doesn’t exist. Still, out of curiosity and an extremely low price, I gave it a read. Wound up reading all three books. Since then, I’ve been watching privacy die in much less sci-fi-y circumstances.

It’s a simple dog whistle. He’s reminding everyone of the holocaust w/o saying the word.

Is there any other way?

d00phy, to politics in 'Trump is for sale': Conservatives outraged over ex-president's TikTok flip-flop

How many are “outraged?” And are they so outraged as to consider not voting for him? If not, this story is meaningless.

In what way?

d00phy, to world in World’s billionaires should pay minimum 2% wealth tax, say G20 ministers

I would add that if you are securing loans above a certain total amount or used for certain purchase types to make a purchase, that purchase is subject to a sales tax that must come out of the purchaser’s pocket. The trouble with wealth taxes is that most of the “wealth” isn’t liquid, but it is often used, for example, as collateral to purchase Twitter. In this instance, the wealth used should be treated as liquid taxable assets. I think those taxes should come either from the purchaser divesting from some amount of assets or a straight cash, not from another loan, payment.

So, besides Russia, who DIDNT know Russia was in danger of a terrorist (or FSB false flag, if recent rumors/conspiracies are to be believed) attack?

d00phy, to politics in Republican anti-Obamacare "healthcare freedom" amendment in Ohio may help overturn trans ban

If true, this would be Ohio Republicans hoisted on their own petard, right? I’ve always wanted to use that one, but it’s so hard to know when.

And Penistone.

d00phy, to politics in Biden’s populist budget marks the overdue end of trickle-down economics

Unfortunately, it also encourages them to move their “headquarters” to places like the Cayman Islands or Ireland where they have more “favorable” corporate tax laws. The global minimum corporate tax might help, but has no teeth unless all countries sign on or all adherents agree to some kind of financial cost for countries who refuse it.

That said, it’s good to see a US politician, especially a neo-dem like Biden make a real push against trickle-down bullshit.

d00phy, to linux in I finally installed Linux, but I'm having a mixed experience

For the home directory question, you actually don’t have to reboot at all. You’ll do most of this as the root user. Just create a new user and put its home directory somewhere like /tmp. Logout, log back in as your temp user, format the new drive, move your home directory (rsync is your friend), edit the fstab (I personally prefer labeling all my partitions and using the labels in fstab). After that, to test your settings, create a new, empty, /home matching the permissions of the old directory. Then type “mount -a”. This goes back through fstab and mounts everything listed if it’s not already mounted. Look for your home directory in /home. If it’s there, you should be able to “su - yourusername” and if you are in your home directory with all your files, you’re all good. No need to reboot. Log out of the temp user account, log back in as you and delete the temp user.

d00phy, to linux in Laptop companies: which one?

Something tells me OP doesn’t share a lot of values with Lenovo!

I haven’t used Framework, but I’m a fan of most of the ThinkPad line. Not as good as the IBM days, but still a solid product.
