I’m working on a some materials for a class wherein I’ll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we’re including a section we’re calling “foot guns”. Basically it’s ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....
If I’ve been repeatedly rerunning commands via ctrl-r’ing back through my history, I’ll start getting careless and more than i should have I’ve accidentally hit enter twice on the wrong command without pausing to double check first. Sometimes to less than desirable effect…
I used linux intermittently in the last 15 or so years, migrating from early Ubuntu versions, to Manjaro, Pop!_OS, Debian, etc. And decided to give Arch a try just recently; with all the memes around its high entry point, I was really expecting to struggle for a long time to set it up just as I want....
I had the same experience. Despite all the doomsaying online I found the installation and configuration process pretty straightforward thanks to the quality documentation.
I have a question: does anyone actually buy the McDonalds Hamburger (like, the basic burger). I’ve never ordered one and I feel like anyone who wants something that basic just gets the cheeseburger.
There hasn’t been a lot of good news out of EA lately, but here’s some: the company just launched a bunch of classic games on Steam. The new (old) releases include nine games in total, spanning franchises like Dungeon Keeper, Populous, and SimCity....
There’s nothing wrong with pineapple on a pizza with tomato sauce. In fact, it’s delicious. Maybe it’s too acidic because they’re putting entire rings of pineapple on their pizza.
Also, this sentence:
“We’re showing that even an ‘Americanata’ — an American gastronomic mishmash — can gain acceptance here if it’s recreated properly.”
I’m sorry to tell you that being an island doesn’t help when the internet and globalised media exist. Australia has plenty of right wing dipshits in government taking notes from the US too.
I feel this. I’m still in the first act and taking my time, but I’ve already lost Gale because I accidentally selected the option to not give him a magical item to consume after he asked a second time - I said I would, and then when I went into the selection menu I realized I couldn’t give him the item I intended, so I backed out and he said fuck you and left. So that’s great for me. Maybe he’ll come back later but then again maybe not. So that’s a whole character I don’t have any more because of an accident.
Oh, and I also never got Lazel because I never went to the area where she was captured until much later and she wasn’t there any more. I did find her (before that, funnily enough) as part of the cut scene with the Githyanki near the bridge but I didn’t know she was a playable character, plus she acted like an enemy and I was really low level and got destroyed so I had to reload. So that’s another character I don’t have and may never get, although I’ll have to go back now that I’m a higher level and see what happens.
My point is that it’s really easy to miss out on large parts of the game due to random or accidental decisions, so I do understand people who find the experience off-putting. Still, I’ve been lucky to have enough free time to be able to play through with my wife so I’ve been able to avoid a lot of the stuff I fucked up in my solo game, and I personally love the game despite the experiences I outlined above.
First time I got to the barn I heard this repetitive thumping sound and assumed there was some kind of goblin machine working away in there. I definitely did not expect to find THAT happening in there lol
What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

This sounds like somebody’s Saturday RPG session recap. Larian have managed to capture the spirit of this quite well!...
