Becoming a totalitarian state Being turned into a totalitarian state by China

impure9435,

It's not maintained anymore. The last commit is 8 months old. Use Bypass Paywalls Clean instead, here's the Firefox version: https://github.com/bpc-clone/bypass-paywalls-firefox-clean

impure9435,

I recommend switching to Bypass Paywalls Clean, since Bypass Paywalls is not maintained anymore.

impure9435,

Use archive.is to access the full article

impure9435,

12ft.io and archive.is are also worth trying out if BPC doesn't work for some reason. There are also self-hosted solutions like 13ft and ladder.

What email provider do you use for sign ups?

I used to use Protonmail, however the verification steps become tedious when creating unique emails for sign ups. I’ve switched to Tutanota despite it contravening their one account policy. What do you all use for one off emails (for sign ups etc )? Or do you prefer one of those 10 minute email sites?

impure9435,

mail.tm is pretty nice for this. It's meant to be used as a throwaway email service, but you can also save the login credentials and reuse the email address if you need it more than one time.

impure9435,

Btw you don't have to go on Shitter, the account is on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/lucia.red

impure9435,

It's not perfect, but much better than going to Shitter. Some people apparently find Mastodon obscure or confusing and switched to Bluesky instead. Supposedly it's more friendly towards new users. I just hope that bridgy-fed improves and becomes more common in the future, so we can follow Bluesky accounts from the Fediverse and vice-versa.

impure9435,

I don't really use it that much either, I prefer Lemmy/Kbin

The FAA investigates after Boeing says workers in South Carolina falsified 787 inspection records (apnews.com)

The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday, May 6, 2024, that it has opened an investigation into Boeing after the beleaguered company reported that workers at a South Carolina plant falsified inspection records on certain 787 planes. Boeing said its engineers have determined that misconduct did not create “an immediate...

impure9435,

I highly recommend this Al Jazeera documentary, they seem to be the only ones covering the Boeing controversy who actually have some balls

impure9435,

For me it was actually the other way around, I had issues with the normal package so I went with the flatpak.

impure9435,

I don't really remember, that was a few years ago. I've been using the flatpak ever since.

impure9435,

@linkwarden, Nextcloud Bookmarks and xBrowserSync should be the best options.
Other options are Floccus, LinkAce, @omnivore and @wallabag

impure9435,

I don't know how Lemmy deals with Mastodon links, but they work on here on Kbin/Mbin and should also work when viewing the post on Mastodon/Firefish/Sharkey directly

impure9435,

The dumbest excuse ever, and somehow, all kinds of western leaders, companies and citizens were tricked into believing it

impure9435,

They are all undercover Hamas members trying to disrupt Israel's political system /s

impure9435,

Yeah because we have an actual working legal system

impure9435,

Or Universal Blue in general. They also make Aurora and Bluefin, both are amazing!

impure9435,

True, just wanted to mention that they make other great stuff. You can basically game on every Linux distro, it doesn't have to be gaming-focused.

impure9435,

You can try uninstalling as much Google crap as possible using the Universal Android Debloater

Then perhaps use a firewall like NetGuard in whitelist mode, to only allow selected apps to access the internet

As an additional layer of security, you can use NextDNS with the No Google blocklist, and block all connections to Google servers in DNS. If you need to access specific things like YouTube, you can whitelist them.

impure9435,

NextDNS is very easy to use, you can check out this video: https://youtu.be/WUG57ynLb8I

From Windows to about 6 recommended distros for gaming.

I am not bad with computers and have a beginner+, maybe intermediate level knowledge of Linux and I kept running into some problems here and there with different distros. Most claimed to work out of the box (which may be the case for some users, but I have a shit ass Nvidia 1060 and that was not at all the case, until I...

impure9435,

uBlue Bazzite is pretty cool, Fedora/Nobara, Pop!_OS, Mint, etc. mostly just work, Gauda is arch-based, is optimized for gaming and performance and is pretty user friendly.

impure9435,

You mean Bazzite? Yeah, it's really great. Based on uBlue, which is actually based on Fedora's Atomic spins. It's very stable, secure and reliable, and pretty hard to mess up. Basically the closest thing to SteamOS that you can get.

Dear @linux and @academicchatter folks:

Please suggest libre/open source tools that allow for the extraction of text and images from scientific pdf documents?

P.S: I'm on a linux machine. Would like something terminal friendly, if possible!

impure9435,

@ajayiyer OCRmyPDF is exactly what you are looking for

impure9435,

I recently stumbled across an open-source frontend for Twitch called SafeTwitch, I really like it.

Under the FISA expansion, what exactly should I worry about, how do I manage privacy?

Hello everyone, with the unfortunate passing of the FISA expansion, I was left with a few questions. I tried to research it, and to me, it seems like they are beefing up surveillance with routers and ISPs (correct me if I’m wrong.) Aside from having businesses stalk you when you use their WiFi (connected with ISPs.)...

impure9435,

Call them afterwards and tell them that because of this you're not voting for them in the next election

impure9435,

No, you're just telling them your opinion. Just make sure to stay calm and friendly, don't get aggressive or insult them and you'll be fine.
