lustyargonian,

Licensing will do that for you. At least you’ll be able to still play it, unlike Crew.

Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Addresses Studio Closures (www.ign.com)

“The closure of any team is hard obviously on the individuals there, hard on the team,” Spencer said. "I haven’t been talking publicly about this, because right now is the time for us to focus on the team and the individuals. It’s obviously a decision that’s very hard on them, and I want to make sure through severance...

lustyargonian,

I was so confused by the trailer. What exactly is this game lol

lustyargonian,

30 FPS and heavy motion blur put me off. Maybe it was just how it was recorded/presented in the stream I guess.

lustyargonian,

I guess we’ll see one or two games do this every 1-2 years, and I think that’s actually fine. Baldur’s Gate 3 did it but in the end optimising for Series S improved it for everyone. Alan Wake 2 devs said it was hard to fit things into Series S memory but they got there in the end and even delivered a 60 FPS mode. Even Immortals of Avuem got it working at 60 FPS for Series S.

It sucks for the devs for sure and they should leverage it to get some concessions from Microsoft for making them do all the hard work. Maybe a smaller platform fee, or partial funding.

lustyargonian,

They worked on both their engine and Starfield. I just hope now the next games don’t require too much engine work (since it was anyway designed around segmented maps of Oblivion and Fallout 3) and can ship games at a faster cadence.

lustyargonian,

AI is going through an “there’s an app for that” phase. 2-5 years from now we’ll see where AI actually makes most sense.

lustyargonian,

Xbox has tried very hard to convince you to play their games on anything but the Xbox. Cloud? Sure. PC? Sure. PS5? Sure. Switch? Most definitely.

lustyargonian,

Unless you’re Nintendo of course.

lustyargonian,

I think they set the target of 21M but sold 20.8M. Almost achieved would be more fitting.

lustyargonian,

Weren’t they gaslighting Xbox players that the modes are working fine?

lustyargonian,

Are you sure both weren’t running at 60 for you?

lustyargonian,

I wonder how good does the Matrix awakens demo runs with 5.4

lustyargonian,

GTA 4. Currently playing TBoGT. I somehow forgot how cool the DLCs were. I’m quite impressed by Luis and the side content added in the DLC. If you squint enough parts of TBoGT already feel a bit like GTA 5. Luis also mentions vice city so I wonder if we’ll see him in GTA 6.

lustyargonian,

I wonder if shadows in unreal engine take different code paths on PS5. Or if the version is updated on PS5 vs PC/Xbox. Or maybe the settings for Xbox aren’t reworked in a while and there’s enough legroom to enhance it further.

Regardless it’s interesting to see Xbox games routinely being a bit better on PS5. Sony was afraid Xbox may downgrade the games during ABK trial but we actually see the opposite here lol.

lustyargonian,

I think the engine would matter a bit less for TES/FO if they’re following the same map design. Starfield was just way too ambitious and poorly designed for the engine they had. Potato physics and object permanence is good but seamless streaming and no loading screens is much better for a space exploration game. For TES/FO, all that object permanence leads to good environmental story telling and useful loot around dungeons if done well, but at this point Todd knows how they are gonna screw it up this time.

lustyargonian,

I wonder if MSFT would build an Xbox app that emulates Xbox, 360 and Xbox One on PC, making it possible to circumvent the need of cross saves/cross progression of older games. Currently it is annoying that you can’t just pick up a game on Xbox and continue playing it on your handheld gaming device for most games.

lustyargonian,

I’ve played the first one and while I enjoy 60 fps, this game is okay at 30, being so slow and all about cinematics and echoes.

lustyargonian,

Wouldn’t these sentiments lead to expectations and then actual changes in policies?

lustyargonian,

And it occasionally ran at 24 fps, which I think is a phenomenal feat!

lustyargonian,

This from 360 gen and Arkham Knight from Xbox One/PS4 still look incredible.

lustyargonian,

I think it’s more like they fix issues in the core and suddenly more games that relied on that code path become more playable. Ideally it would be nice to have a 100% complete emulator as an end user, as then you don’t have to think too much about what plays and what doesn’t.

lustyargonian, (edited )

GTA IV and NFS Unbound on Rog Ally.

I’ll be honest, I was too young to understand GTA IV’s lore back then, and I was mainly playing it for barely getting 20 FPS on my PC and the physics system of the game. But now when I actually listen to the dialogues and radio station, man it sounds like they saw what America would be like in 2020s a decade early. “We should reduce minimum wage and remove rights of citizens to fight against the illegal immigration crisis”. Damn.

lustyargonian,

Companies are not your friends.

lustyargonian,

Are you sure?

lustyargonian,

Yeah you’re right. Still, companies gonna company, we should make people are friends instead.

lustyargonian,

It’s baffling that a software company isn’t able to give best software experience in their own operating system and software stack.

lustyargonian,

While technically true, they have had one update since launch, and a small hotfix. It isn’t big in changes but just the biggest yet in bugfixes.

lustyargonian,

How to become a millionaire in two steps:

Step 1: save 10k every year.
Step 2: do this for 100 years.

lustyargonian,

Also we don’t yet know the next AMD mobile chip’s performance efficiency. Intel might have caught up, but AMD can still pull ahead.

What does excite me about Intel iGPU is their superior XeSS performance, which can help in both visual quality and battery life, but it still has to prove itself in laptop space first I guess.

lustyargonian,

Still no clear release date. I guess it’s safe to assume it’s in the second half.

lustyargonian,

I think Flight Simulator has paid mods and I’ve seen ambivalent or slightly positive opinions of it. It is definitely doable and is actually a good idea, but something about Bethesda and their way of doing it always seems shady.

lustyargonian,

Another dude climbed a mountain and reappeared a month later with a rock and yelled at people having a good time around a golden statue of an animal, pointing at how his rock is better.

lustyargonian,

The engine is holding the entire world together really well, I mean it’s unbelievable it’s all in realtime and at that massive scale. I really liked the water physics part too. Feels really good.

However, idk if it’s just me but the materials, foliage and terrains do look bit last gen. I’m not sure if it’s just texture work or dx11 related limitations or lack of use of photogrammetry that we otherwise see in contemporary games. It’s a nitpick and of course the engine is doing stuff that we’ve never seen ever.

lustyargonian,

That’s how Xbox, PS, iOS and somewhat Android work. They all have their own store and don’t allow alternate stores, and charge a commision. I would like to see alternate stores but I doubt this lawsuit would make that happen.

TIL that there's a FOSS Tomb Raider engine that can run on a web browser (lemmy.world)

The name is OpenLara (github.com/XProger/OpenLara ) and you can try out the WebGL build directly on your web browser on: xproger.info/projects/OpenLara/ . The web version works amazingly well on my Pixel 7a with touch controls (you have to click on the “go fullscreen” button) using Firefox as a browser.

lustyargonian,

That was true with old days of Flash and Java Applets. There’s not much that can be done with WebGL and canvas APIs unless there’s a vulnerability with a specific browser version on a specific Intel or AMD hardware, which in this case is unlikely given the code is open source.

lustyargonian,

Wow it’s glossy and matte at the same time. How are they managing to make it uglier.
