More concerning than Bethesda’s decision to withhold early review codes from certain outlets is how heavily some sites are relying on the game to drive their business.
I ran a gaming store at the time, with rentals. I remember when brink came out and I had the exact same experience when I took it home to try. At least I had no anticipation and didn’t pay anything for it.
Review summary: “If you see Carmageddon 64 in the shops, take it off the shelves, rip up the box and throw the cart repeatedly against the wall until it breaks”.
Classic
Edit: fuck me, fourty fucking quid for that game back then. That’s £70 with inflation!!!
Edit edit: I’m looking at the prices of the games I got in the 90s…fucking hell, we have it good nowadays. Of course literally everything else is more expensive but eh
Yeah, after Reddit died (as far as I’m concerned) I set up a tracker for a load of RSS feeds. A lot of them are, as you say, updates concerning walkthroughs and guides. Predominantly Baldurs Gate 3 at the moment.
Which is fine I guess, but it is very obvious what they’re pushing…I’d rather just have news.
No, the Wii U’s issue is the name is nonsensical. What the fuck does the U mean? It sounds like an add-on or health title.
No one had an issue with identifying the Super Nintendo Entertainment System as a successor to the Nintendo Entertainment System, or the Super Famicom as the successor to the Famicom.
I don’t play my switch anymore, I exclusively use Yuzu on my PC.
I can play games like Xenoblade 3 in native 4k 60fps with HDR on my TV using a pro controller. No way am I going back to using the switch docked. Ever.
Edit: also 4k mario kart deluxe with mods. Shrek, Peter Griffin and homer are perfect additions to any race
Yep. And the console itself looked like a Wii, out of focus in all promotions to begin with too.
When the console was announced at that E3 back then, I was on a live chat somewhere I think, thousands of active users, most obviously well versed in games and consoles and tech in general. Everyone was fucking confused. That was when it was obvious it would not go well.
I got it expecting to hate it, but as I kept playing, I found myself legitimately enjoying it. Not begrudgingly enjoying it, not enjoying it outside of one or two small details, but actually being engaged in the story and gameplay. Which leads me to wondering why people had a problem with this game in the first place again?
These are still being released for many games. Xenoblade 3 was released as a full 100+ hour RPG with basically zero bugs and no microtransactions at all - the DLC included a full new story expansion worth 40+ hours, new characters, battle system changes, an entirely new world to explore, etc. They could sell the fucking thing separately and it would be fine as a standalone if it weren’t for it bookending the series in plot.
Releasing a good, finished game, with a good, finished DLC campaign that respects the player should be standard and expected. It’s not something that should be considered unique to Larian - but we need more like these and I’d love them to bring a Xenoblade 3:Future Redeemed size expansion, like the ones you mentioned, to BG3.
Edit: the old fallout 3 expansions were great too iirc
Yep we did a massive battle yesterday, went to long rest. Got stuck in the camp with us lying down on the floor twitching with our heads in the campfire itself. Couldn’t quit, couldn’t save, couldn’t leave the fucked camp sleep animation. Tried everything.
Hardly retro hardware but now with the new version coming out it’s definitely obsolete. Even so I’m still lovin my rp2+. Even my RP3+ hasn’t been able to replace it....
I used to run a rpi2 but then the MiSTer replaced it and then some. Absolute zero latency or input delay, hardware FPGA emulation. Running SNES or PSX perfectly replicated on a 1440p display natively is just woah
Been playing FF7 for the first time myself on it, it’s fantastic. Never played it in the 90s, had more Nintendo then.
No links to the other games in story, other than nopon appearing and one type of unique monster. No real main character (create your own), missions and exploration over story. Very minimal story. Huge mechs, soundtrack by Hiroyuki Sawano (attack on titan) complete with rap during battles.
It’s a very frustrating game, but it is gigantic, has some awesome worlds to explore and is worth playing
I was disappointed in it at launch as it was not what I expected from Xenoblade after getting that one at launch here in the UK in 2011 - that was incredible.
I just finished inside and wanted to see how people felt about it in 2023. Everything I’ve read about it around 2016-2017 seems to regard it as the best game of the year and in some cases one of the best of all time. It’s this truly still the consensus?
Even that seems mad to me, I remember the hype when GTAIV came out and buying it that evening after work. That doesn’t seem long ago, so the gap between them two feels comparitavely short
