Not the OP, but I for once can’t. She’s not sexualized in any way.

what's your current linux distro?

wanting to hop into the world of linux on a dual boot method (one of my favorite games unfortunately cannot be run on linux at all, and it’s a gacha. I don’t want to gamble with my account being banned, so I’m keeping windows for it specifically.) this’ll be my second go at it, I used Pop!_OS briefly but had some issues...

I have a Surface Notebook 2 and for the life of me can’t get Ubuntu (or Xubuntu in my case) to work with it. No matter which installation style I use, either it crashes during the installation or never boots into the bootloader. Eventually I installed some custom Arch, but I hate it.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Yeah I’ll try eventually, but I got another Laptop running Xubuntu just fine, so I just don’t really use the Surface at all. It’s more of a last resort for the time being, and for that, any OS will do.

I live in China. Trust me, you don’t want to have those homes in the US. The house I live in has been completed in 2016 and I’m the first tenant, moved in in 2018, and it’s got more issues than my dad’s house from 1965. Houses here are built as cheaply as possible, skimping on building materials, safety, plumbing, insulation, wiring, etc.

The pricing bubble is just a joke on top. The actual value of the real estate here should be about 20-25% of what it is in reality - for example if I were to buy the house I’m renting right now, I’d break even after 114 years. Not taking any repairs or interest into account.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Oh true, my dad’s house that I used to compare the ones in China to is in Germany.

Macau never had the same autonomy as HK. They saw themselves as a part of China colonized by Portugal, whereas Hong Kong was proudly independent and part of the British Empire.

So the situation there is just the same as it is in HK right now, it just didn’t bother the people a whole lot. Their entire business model as a country was catering to the Chinese society anyway, and on that end, nothing changed.

@viking@infosec.pub avatar

It does a bit, since every party will be represented in the European council based on the number of votes they have. It’s not an election where the winner takes all.

I think the pirates had one or two representatives in the council, which is enough to start debates and make proposals. They obviously can’t push anything through by themselves.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

The option to download free is excellent, I wouldn’t know what price is “fair” without checking it out first. Will give it a try for a couple days and then come back with a decision (or not if I end up not liking it, who knows).

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

No, that’s the whole point of using encryption. If the windows boatloader had a means of scanning the content of an encrypted file system, it would have already been exploited to circumvent encryption.

@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Criminals come in all shapes and colours. There’s nothing hintingat a covert Russian OP.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

You can’t use those on a router, and they are painful on mobile.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

So you are running a full-fledged OS on a standalone computer that functions as a router. An actual router has a very limited operating system with no such functionality, plus it’s always online by design, so you’d basically have to have a key that is permanently plugged in; or depending on the setup you’d have to re-authenticate ever so often. Not exactly great considering most routers are hidden somewhere in an inaccessible corner.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Sounds like mail.yandex.com should work for you. It’s the Russian copycat of gmail, basically. But they allow anonymous signup with a “don’t have” option for phone numbers, and they have next to no trackers on the website. That ones they have are easily blocked.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

All of those are for the yandex browser, which is a dedicated app.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Then we’ll all be speaking Russian in 15 years.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

It says not to leave “subjective bad reviews”. As in, objectively bad is fine.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

In the context of a game, let’s say a clearly outdated graphics engine that everyone can agree on looks very dated. Or game-stopping bugs. Constant crashes. Etc.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Have you been in China during the pandemic? No? Then shut the fuck up, kindly.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Around the turn of the millennium. Games were designed for offline use and had way more immersive campaigns, were shipped by and large ready and bug-free, and so were add-on campaigns.

And since graphics were not as refined as they are now, additional efforts were placed on gameplay.

My top list (by release year):

  • Diablo II (1996)
  • Dungeon Keeper (1997)
  • Half-Life (1998)
  • Thief: The Dark Project (1998)
  • Thief 2 (1999)
  • Dungeon Keeper 2 (1999)
  • Heroes of Might & Magic 3 (1999)
  • Gothic II (2002)

Never had a console and don’t get along with controllers whatsoever, so those are all referring to the PC versions.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

For Thief and Gothic II there are unofficial graphic mods out there that improve things massively. They basically replace the original models with those from Thief II and Gothic 3, and also fix some bugs.

www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152429 - that’s a user made campaign for Thief, the thread also has links to all the patches and updates. The campaign is also absolutely great with overwhelmingly massive maps, but you should play the original first.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I’ve recently replayed Thief and Thief 2, they still hold up well!

Tried Gothic II, and unfortunately the controls feel very clunky today. Or maybe it’s just me. But somehow third person view doesn’t really work for me anymore.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

They didn’t bring it to light, it was a user report posted on reddit. They merely investigated it further. Nothing against mullvad, it’s a great vpn, but credit where credit is due.

Water under the bridge. There’s no point in telling, all you’d do is hurt her yet again, and potentially jeopardize everything.

Nothing happened after all, so put it down as a near miss and make sure that’s not happening again in the future. If you can’t handle alcohol, leave it be.

Have you ever heard someone speaking French who didn’t list “complaining about stuff” as their number 1 hobby?

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

If you have no objections to the listed figures, you can simply approve it and be done with it. If you need to add any additional income or special deductions, you add those to the form (usually online) and resubmit.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

You can put in a timeout command at the end, and then call the next .bat file.

For example “TIMEOUT /T 60” waits for 60 seconds before resuming, or you can override it by pressing any key.

So if you know how long the wait time between scripts is, just write a master.bat and call them in order, with adequate waiting time in between.

LOL, some of the comments in the source are gold.

Safest way of using WeChat on Android?

I live in Canada. My girlfriend is Chinese (also living in Canada), and while we are able to communicate via SMS, her mobile carrier isn’t the best, and so there have often been issues for us with regular texting. She expressed a strong preference to use WeChat, at least as a backup option for when texting fails us. While I...

I’m in China and have to use that piece of crap. So here’s how I locked it down:

  1. Root your phone with Magisk. There’s no way around it.
  2. Install Storage Isolation (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=moe.shizuku…) and deny access to all folders.
  3. Install ApOps (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rikka.appop…) and set pretty much everything to deny or ignore (ignore means the app receives the information “permission granted”, but no data is provided, in case some permissions are “mandatory”). If you intend to use wechat to exchange voice messages or make video calls/send photos, the “use microphone” and “use camera” functions would be required. In a similar fashion the location access if you intend to use the location sharing feature.
  4. Be acutely aware that wechat is not encrypting messages, neither end to end nor in the server communicaton. Everything you say can (and probably will) be read and archived. Don’t say anything confidential or critical there.

And yeah really, try to convince your wife girlfriend to use signal instead. Or hell, even whatsapp is miles ahead.

My wife is Chinese as well, so even after we leave here she’ll be using wechat to stay in touch with family, no way around it, but using messengers more commonplace in other countries is definitely better. Personally I will move wechat to another phone once we’re out. For now that’s not feasible as it’s too much integrated into every function of life here.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Whatsapp uses end to end encryption and is far from as intrusive as wechat.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I guess it could be, but that kills the use case of being contactable by his GF on the fly.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Please go back to your tankie-sphere and leave me alone.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Yeah I’ve played around with it in the past, but having to re-establish the wireless adb was quite annoying. Plus I need root for AdAway already, I don’t think that can be achieved via Shizuku, but that might not apply to the OP. I’ve tried island back in the beta stage and it wouldn’t work on my phone, but I guess things have change since. Might give it another try.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I’ve tried time and time again to enjoy “modern” games, but nothing released after Oblivion or The Witcher 3 was worth my time.

Plenty of old games however have an extremely high replay value, thanks to their immersive missions and bugfree gameplay. Recently played Thief: The Dark Project again (from 1999), and it’s a bloody masterpiece.

Is amp still around? Those cancerous links drove me back to Firefox after years of using Chrome, they hardly ever worked.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I’m still using google search, just deactivated amp. Initially with a Firefox add-on, now I think that’s a native feature.

But Google search results are increasingly bad, what alternative do you recommend? I’ve dabbled with bing and yandex (which is honestly quite good, but… Russian) and would like to have a real alternative.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I keep coming across kagi but haven’t used it yet. Think I’ll give it a try finally.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Yep I’ve just signed up for the free trial and will use it in parallel to google to get a feeling for the difference. Since I’m using google with anti-tracking and adblock, I don’t really get annoyed by the site itself, more like the crappy top-ranking SEO pages. Back in the days, the front page was all I ever needed, now I feel like the good results start on page 2.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Oh nice, that’s a good tip. Thanks!

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Do you actually mean fermented, or pickled?

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

What’s so bad about it? I honestly like Oxygen OS, and preferred Android 11 over 12. All they did was add unnecessary security features that further locked the user out of their system. Just install a different launcher (Nova is my favorite by far) and custom icons if you want to change the visual appearance, and done.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Unless you bought your phone in China, you should already have Oxygen. That’s the default OnePlus OS.

Firefox failing several privacy tests out-of-the-box, according to Brave article (lemmy.world)

The legend says “doesn’t exist or off by default”, and I believe gpc and auto https needs to be switched on manually. Same for anti fingerprinting. Still misleading.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

My mom knows nothing about adblock, and is still blocking ads. You better believe all of the kids having to fix their relative’s computers will set up some free antivirus and ad blocking right away.

Can’t comment on the sample size though, Ghostery might indeed be somehow biased and measure devices where their software is installed vs. total number of internet users or something? But users of ghostery are more likely to be tech savvy, so there’s a higher chance of them having more devices that are equally sanitized.

I’d have to dig through the study and see if the sampling mechanism is made public.

Bitdefender Free is great and doesn’t nag users to upgrade.

I have an inherent distrust to all things Microsoft. And their firewall is so terrible that I don’t want to find out they were as negligent when it came to developing their antivirus.
