Leaked Cables Show White House Opposes Palestinian Statehood (theintercept.com)

Ahead of the United Nations Security Council action to consider the Palestinian Authority’s application to become a full member of the international body, the United States is lobbying nations to reject such membership, hoping to avoid an overt “veto” by Washington. The lobbying effort, revealed in copies of unclassified...

jeffw,

The State Department’s justification is that normalizing relations between Israel and Arab states is the fastest and most effective way to achieve an enduring and productive statehood.

So there’s not opposition to a Palestinian state per se, just opposition to them joining the UN as a voting member right now. The headline is a bit of a stretch when the article says they still support statehood.

jeffw,

Oh boy, You love cherrypicking quotes to make it sound like the US doesn’t want Palestinian statehood even when it’s clear they do. As it clearly states, they don’t support statehood achieved through these means, since it should be done in bilateral negotiations.

jeffw,

Good on you to pretend the state department hasn’t tried to assist those bilateral negotiations

jeffw,

Assuming conservatives would care about that? Bold conclusion

jeffw,

Which gets back to the point of “why did RFK pick this person who 99% of Americans had never heard of?”

I still wish he had went with Aaron Rodgers. Mostly because I just want the NFL to be rid of that guy and I think campaigning might’ve forced him to skip the season.

jeffw,

Permanent?

You’re so good at trolling! You’re so original!

jeffw,

Do you care about monopolies though? Whether it’s concerts or something else, we should all despise monopolies

jeffw,

I don’t think any of those have 80% of their respective markets though. Not defending any of those companies, just saying it isn’t an open and shut case.

And a lot of stuff with Nestle and Cargill in environmental, so it happens outside of the USA afaik

jeffw,

That’s how all monopolies work I suppose. That doesn’t make them right

jeffw,

It’s pretty important to bust monopolies, I’d say

jeffw,

Yup, deleted my comment, thanks!

jeffw,

“Man who never tells truth lies on election disclosure form” sounds pretty realistic

jeffw,

There’s a term for it. I can only think of “pocket veto,” but that’s the opposite. It’s still allowing the bill to become law though

jeffw,

As far as 3, you really think that’s a hill he wants to die on? I know some state legislatures have killed similar bills, but a governor expending political capital to veto it?

jeffw, (edited )

… did you just “all lives matter” an article about mass incarceration? Gerrymanding overall is an issue, sure, but this is a post about the criminal justice system and how prisoners are used as political pawns

jeffw,

All lives matter is about redirecting attention away from a marginalized or oppressed group when we are discussing their marginalization.

This article is about how prisoners are taken advantage of and the commenter made it about everyone else.

Edit: to quote a Redditor

Imagine that you’re sitting down to dinner with your family, and while everyone else gets a serving of the meal, you don’t get any. So you say “I should get my fair share.” And as a direct response to this, your dad corrects you, saying, “everyone should get their fair share.” Now, that’s a wonderful sentiment – indeed, everyone should, and that was kinda your point in the first place: that you should be a part of everyone, and you should get your fair share also. However, dad’s smart-ass comment just dismissed you and didn’t solve the problem that you still haven’t gotten any!

The problem is that the statement “I should get my fair share” had an implicit “too” at the end: “I should get my fair share, too, just like everyone else.” But your dad’s response treated your statement as though you meant “only I should get my fair share”, which clearly was not your intention. As a result, his statement that “everyone should get their fair share,” while true, only served to ignore the problem you were trying to point out.

That’s the situation of the “black lives matter” movement. Culture, laws, the arts, religion, and everyone else repeatedly suggest that all lives should matter. Clearly, that message already abounds in our society.

jeffw,

I hope to see more of provinces/states and other govts actually caring too lol

jeffw,

The funny thing is I’m pretty sure I read that when he got the job and I promptly forgot because fuck that clown lol

jeffw,

Or, hear me out, any method of stock valuation that isn’t “hurr durr meme stock to the m00n!” Shows that DJT is worthless

jeffw,

You published one biased story about GMOs 8 years ago, now we can’t trust ANYTHING you say!!!

Great logic there

jeffw,

That doesn’t talk about the topic of the original article though, which is the sales targeting religious US Jews

jeffw,

I highly doubt they’d be crappy enough to keep that up. Nobody does polls like that now
