Are those sindarin key caps? That’s awesome!

SuperFola,
@SuperFola@programming.dev avatar

Yes! Custom ones I ordered on FKCaps. I may have put them hastily, in the wrong orientation and place but since I can’t read it (yet… another project!) it does not bother me haha

I’m not sure, but what are the wheels mapped to? Are they scroll or mouse x/y/something else?

SuperFola,
@SuperFola@programming.dev avatar

It depends on the layer. I have volume, screen brightness, tab/shift tab (pair it with ctrl/cmd and this is very versatile), command left/right (browser history), ctrl left/right (macos virtual desktops), undo/redo, scroll up/down, page up/down. Since it can also act as a normal switch, I put play/pause on it when it controls the volume, and mouse click when it scrolls.

You could map them to mouse movement too quite easily!

ABoxOfNeurons,

Thanks! Might steal that for my setup.

awesome look! how are you liking the convex thumb caps?

SuperFola,
@SuperFola@programming.dev avatar

The convex caps are awesome ; I felt uneasy with concave ones before, now my thumbs are lying on plastic cushions. They are not textured and allow your thumbs to glide on them.

I know nothing about ergomech keyboards but this looks like a genuine work of art and got me interested in seeing more. Thank you for sharing this!

Thanks! That’s truly heartwarming to read

I’m curious, what’s the point of having the last pinky key to the side instead of below?

Necromnomicon,

I think the idea is, that is supposed to be the top pinkie key, some people find moving laterally is more comfortable than stretching upward?

SuperFola,
@SuperFola@programming.dev avatar

Exactly, I tried this configuration on paper and then on a Cantor (42 keys, 6 columns) and this felt better for me and a friend than reaching down.

I think one of your keys is upside down? Right split, second row, third from the left.

Or maybe it’s just the font

Looks super cool :) how much did you pay for keycaps?

SuperFola,
@SuperFola@programming.dev avatar

Thanks! They were like 45€ without shipping, and I got 36 (the thumb ones are concave and I prefer convex caps). That makes the caps more expensive than a MBK legends set but it’s 100% your own, which makes it worth it to me.

Very resourceful, I like it.

Added benefit: you’ll definitely hear it if someone tries to open the garage door and steal all your stuff in the middle of the night

CLACK

TheFlame, to mechanicalkeyboards in Garage door opener now uses Cherry MX Blues

This is so stupid, but I love it so much. 🤣 I’m tempted to give it a try, but I’m worried that once I get used to mechanical switches on my garage door opener - I’ll need them throughout the rest of the house too.

riskable,
@riskable@programming.dev avatar

Do it! Normal garage door openers are good for like 1,000 cycles (if that, haha). With these switches it should be good for 50 million.

bluGill,

You have to replace the door hinges and rollers a few times to get that life.

Curious, wouldn't waterproofing be an issue? Or is this on the indoor side of the garage?

riskable,
@riskable@programming.dev avatar

It’s inside the garage so water isn’t an issue.

Having said that I would have no trouble at all making a version of this that’s waterproof! For that though I’d make a PCB and use my own magnetic key switches (Void Switch)…

youtu.be/iv6Rh8UNWlI?si=HLxDopztmpPDVTVI

When I made that keyboard for Chyros I asked him if he wanted it to be waterproof and he said no so I never bothered but it’s not very difficult to do such a thing when your entire keyboard is contactless.

The “key” is to use waterproof connectors or just solder the wires directly to the PCB. Then you just coat the whole thing in silicone sealant (or similar e.g. seal it with epoxy, Flex Seal, etc). The chips don’t care and hall effect sensors will still work just fine through any non-ferromagnetic coating (e.g. any plastic or hydrocarbon-based material).

I should do this with the one in my car; the stock don’t work very good
