bluGill,

In short he was proven wrong - we do have the regulations already and they got him.

(AI probably needs more regulation)

bluGill,

Blame everyone. My brother-in-law works for a refinery. They get beat up in the news and by politicians all the time, but when they need something it always happens - even in California. Which shouldn't surprise - people say they want things like clean air until they discover it means gas prices go up (or they can't drive their car at all) and suddenly they don't care are all.

bluGill,

Why are you blaming the minimum wage worker? It is everybody with a car which is the vast majority of the adult population. Poor, middle class, rich - all of them care about gas prices and scream when they go up.

bluGill,

People have no options because everyone collectively hasn't created them. Sure a few people vote for transit, bike lanes and the like, but not many. (and the poor are not better than anyone else at this) . There are options - you can move closer to work, get a different job that is closer to where you live, get a bike, carpool, ride transit.... Those all bad options for most people but they exist and so they choose them.

bluGill,

Your local bike store should have a nice selection. I use my EV bike all the time and the car I keep for those few trips where the bike doesn't work just sits... You should too. Don't forget to check out the local transit options (and if - as is likely - they are bad demand better)

bluGill,

With a secret ballot there is no way to know who voted for who. when talking about your vote the ethical thing is to lie.

Russia threatens Britain with retaliation if involvement in Ukraine war deepens (www.pbs.org)

Russia on Monday threatened to strike British military facilities and said it would hold drills simulating the use of battlefield nuclear weapons amid sharply rising tensions over comments by senior Western officials about possibly deeper involvement in the war in Ukraine....

bluGill,

They hope to scare enough people to get a change. don't let it work.

bluGill,

I don't think these reach any refinery so that isn't an option. What is best is anything that sows confusion.

bluGill,

We stopped using lead in the 80s - the existing pipes are mostly still there and working just fine. If you are in a building or city built before 1985 assume there is lead in the plumbing someplace and take action. The more important thing you can do is let drinking water run for a minute before drinking (or install a RO drinking water system that will remove lead - regular filters will not - RO is most common of that that will).

With a little care (much of it chemistry - meaning your water department - not much lead will leach from your pipes and you are okay. Okay should not be confused with good, 0 lead is what you want. However it isn't feasible to replace all pipes in a day and so step one is doing as little damage as possible, then we reduce even that.

bluGill,

A whole house ro filter is evpensive, so I doubt most will install one vs a drinking water system. Most plumbers won't know about a whole house system much less sell one.

unless you live in an area where the water is so bad your showers dosen't get you clean. Then you can get one - but you should have one.

bluGill,

there is normally nothing wrong with well water. I have lab reports on my current well to prove it.

bluGill,

We know from many sources that North Korea is supplying Russia with missiles. We also know Russia is using missiles on Civilians. Do we really need any second source to connect the two?

bluGill,

The US (and other European partners) is sending BOTH ATACMS for missile launch sites, and also PATRIOT for targeting incoming missiles. Two different systems for a different purpose and Ukraine is getting both.

Hamas official says group would lay down its arms if an independent Palestinian state is established (apnews.com)

A top Hamas political official told The Associated Press the Islamic militant group is willing to agree to a truce of five years or more with Israel and that it would lay down its weapons and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established along pre-1967 borders.

bluGill,

One side? Both sides are doing this. The details are different, but both sides are being evil here.

bluGill,

As soon as the armies and governments that buy most of that stuff cares the industry will too. Now money talks end everyone cares about cost more than supply chain so the low cost supply chain wins. Pay more and you can get a different supply chain.

Russia warns Japan on missile transfer to Ukraine, threatens ties (essanews.com)

The Russian Ambassador in Tokyo, Nikolai Nozdrev, has issued a warning to Japan in response to the potential transfer of Patriot missiles produced in Japan to Ukraine. Nozdrev emphasized that such an action could have severe repercussions for the bilateral relations between Russia and Japan, including possible “retaliatory...

bluGill,

Japan and russia never agreedeto end wwii and have a dispute about some islands.

bluGill,

Abuse. I don't agreewithfree speach in all things. I doupt anyone does. I don't want to see constant (to the point of only) ads for vbucks. I don't want threats to my person. There are a few other things like that, that I think we all agree on., I then have a personal list of things like porn or swearing that iidon't want to see but some of you do. Where to draw theelineethus isn't clear but there is one.

bluGill,

Sure, when linux loads are process it follows a standard procedure to see how to run the file. If the file has ELF markers it runs the process via the ELF loader. If the file has #! as the first then it uses a different process to run that script. (I doubt a.out executable format is supported anymore, but that at least used to be an option). There is no reason you cannot hack this process to detect windows executable and then use wine to load/run the application. I'm not sure why nobody has done this, but the basic things have been supported in linux for decades.

bluGill,

i last looked into this about 20 years ago. I concluded I could make it work but I don't use wine enough to bother.

bluGill,

The whole goal of those changes is tough love to fix all the problems, so short term problems but in 2 years things improve for the better.

Administrations don't have near as much control over the short term as you seem to think.

bluGill,

The duolingo format was never popular with polyglots. The game format makes it easy to feel like you did something which is a great thing, but the is the only pro people who have learned multiple languages find with it.

There is a lot of debate about what the best way to start is, but all agree that you need to interact with the real language in real world type settings (watching a movie in the language with subtitles is real world, though you need to make an effort to listen not just read!) They also agree that time is important, you need to study at least an hour every day to make progress.

bluGill,

While technically you don't need to study an hour every day, if you don't put that much time into it you will eventually look back and see you have spend a year+ and don't know anything and then give up. An hour a day means it is likely you have made progress between reviews of your life and thus the effort is worth continuing. At 10 minutes per day you will be dead before you know the language, so giving up is the right answer.

Enough people fail to learn a language in school as to consider the whole idea of school bunk. (but some do learn, and some schools are better than others - but the better ones all feature time as a factor)

YouTube screwing itself with adblockers again

I use Firefox and uBlock Origin. Not sure what kind of experience anyone else is having with YouTube, but recently my home page has been empty because I “don’t have watch history turned on”. Okay, fine. I won’t be able to browse suggested videos, and I’ll spend less time on their platform....

bluGill,

Statistically you will buy that so the ad companies pay google to ignore your prefferences.

bluGill,

Let me add the regular reminder to look for content on peertube first.

bluGill,

Looks cleaner than my desk. Bet it feels good to work there

bluGill,

You have to replace the door hinges and rollers a few times to get that life.

bluGill,

Duolingo is useful for wasting time while feeling like you are learning however it isn't a great tool for learning if that is your goal.
