US preparing $1 billion weapons package for Ukraine, officials say

The United States is preparing a $1 billion military aid package for Ukraine, the first to be sourced from the yet to be signed Ukraine-Israel bill, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Tuesday.

The aid package includes vehicles, Stinger air defense munitions, additional ammunition for high-mobility artillery rocket systems, 155 millimeter artillery ammunition, TOW and Javelin anti-tank munitions and other weapons that can immediately be put to use on the battlefield, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

President Joe Biden had asked the U.S. Congress to provide $60.8 billion in aid to Ukraine, but the initiative stalled when Republicans in the House of Representatives refused to move the measure forward for months.

On Tuesday the Senate was expected to vote on four bills now passed by the House. One for Ukraine, a second with $26 billion for Israel, a third with $8.12 billion “to counter communist China” in the Indo-Pacific and a fourth that includes a potential ban on the social media app TikTok.

The Ukraine bill also calls for the transfer of ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile Systems) with a range of up to 190 miles, which Kyiv has pledged not to use inside Russia’s territory.

This is sad, more weapons, more civilians killed. I wonder what are the “true” things being negotiated. In bellic conflicts there are no allies, only interests and business.

djsoren19,

I just pray it’s still in time. The Russian traitors in the U.S. Congress need to be expelled. From the country. Preferably via cannon. Maybe directly into the sun.

Big_Boss_77,
Valmond,

Thank you american allies 💖 !

redlue,

Sunk cost.

Ukraine is still going to lose and all the useful idiots are going to complain it’s because they didn’t get enough equipment.

Valmond,

Oh no, a russian bot on copium.

How sad.

wintermute_oregon,

Ukraine may lose but they should at least be given the chance to fight back. If they lose it’s because Russia has more cannon fodder.

Buelldozer,
@Buelldozer@lemmy.today avatar

Ukraine is still going to lose…

Perhaps, but at this point any “Victory” by Russia is entirely Pyrrhic.

You see regardless of what happens in / to Ukraine there is no path to recovery for the Russian State. In less than 30 years they will be gone.

Badeendje,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

So even if Russia manages to hold territory, then what. Forever war? They will be battling insurgents, a neighbor that will keep targeting your valuable industry. Russia seems to have way more to lose here, especially in the medium term.

redlue,

Resistances will be quashed and Ukrainians will learn to deal with their new rulers.

It isn’t pretty, but that’s life.

Badeendje,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

Wow you sound like a cardassian.

Oh look, the weirdo who thinks mental health is fake is a Russian Bot. What a surprise.

Pilferjinx,

Is Russia is going to stop with Ukraine? Is Transnistria magically going to invade and conquer Moldova? Is Georgia going to become another Belarus or do they need to be invaded again? Should we just give up because it costs too much?

redlue,

Slippery slope.

Knoxvomica,

You for real though?

redlue,

You must not be familiar with logical fallacies.

Knoxvomica,

I mean, I’m doing just fine but thanks.

BombOmOm,

Perhaps.

Ukraine was going to lose in the first three days; Ukraine was going to lose in the next two weeks; Ukraine was going to lose in the next three months. We are now in the third year of Russia’s war of conquest and it is clear Ukraine can hold their own. It is our duty to give them a fighting chance against the invader.

redlue,

Literally all Russia has said is that Western support for Ukraine will falter which it has and now it’s too late for Ukrainians to make a comeback.

Why don’t you look in the mirror and think about how Ukraine was supposed to retake Crimea? Then just occupied Ukrainian territory? Now they’re literally fighting for their sovereignty because they can’t win.

Mobilityfuture,

While we’re engaging with your fantasies… I might suggest the US supports Ukraine all the way up to Moscow’s front door.

Prigozhin proved all you have to do is drive up the highway.

Russia is a paper tiger, and it benefits the west to arm Ukraine as long as they will fight the occupier and expose them. From a political realist perspective this is true even if Ukraine looses.

Your arguments are false and I suspect you are a troll. Slava Ukraine.

redlue,

Why don’t you look in the mirror and think about how Ukraine was supposed to retake Crimea? Then just occupied Ukrainian territory?

You are completely incapable of reflection.

This is why you succumb to indoctrination and propaganda without even realizing it.

andxz,

Oh the irony.

redlue,

You’d have a point if Ukraine wasn’t losing.

andxz,

You’re more than a little delusional if you think this shit is going to end well for Russia.

redlue,

Well, it’s currently going very poorly for Ukraine.

You’re more than a little delusional if you think this shit is going to end well for Russia.

That’s ironic. Neither of us has a crystal ball, but you’re pretending you do.

andxz,

Damn, you must really like the taste of those boots.

redlue,

Why don’t you look in the mirror and think about how Ukraine was supposed to retake Crimea? Then just occupied Ukrainian territory?

andxz,

You seem a bit confused about this whole thing.

redlue,

Nah. You’re just incapable of admitting you’re wrong.

Notice how instead of acknowledging Ukraine is currently losing in the other thread, you try to predict the future by saying “this won’t end well for Russia”?

Nah. Of course you don’t. That would make you rational.

andxz,

You’re getting your comments mixed up.

obinice,

If Europe falls, Russia will come for your country eventually too, once they’re done with the USA.

Not that you care, you’re probably working for Russia, or already in your 60s so this won’t affect you much, but ya know, just in case…

redlue,

Ukraine isn’t Europe.

you’re probably working for Russia, or already in your 60s

Wrong on both ends, but you people are incapable of admitting it.

Hawk,

You must be terrible at geography if you don’t even know Ukraine is in Europe…

gmtom,

It’s a damn shame how many genuinely good people are being killed in this war just for edgelords like you to live their lives unscathed.

redlue,

Lol, what?

Fedizen,

a brave post by a brave internet lad. /$

SkyezOpen,

Even if Ukraine loses in the end, that equipment is going to continue to absolutely wreck Russia’s military capabilities for the foreseeable future.

redlue,

Well, ya’ll have been wrong about everything up to this point so I won’t hold my breath.

SkyezOpen,

I don’t know who you’re lumping me in with so I have no idea what I’ve been wrong about so far.

And no. The fact that this new wave of aid will be used to explode Russian equipment is undeniable. I’ll tag you in the threads if you want.

redlue,

So you admit that you didn’t think Ukraine could take back Crimea or other occupied territory with just equipment?

xor,

I don’t know why you assume that everybody except you had just decided that Ukraine was going to easily take back Crimea

It remains the maximal long term outcome, but was never considered a likely result

redlue,

I don’t know why you assume that everybody except you had just decided that Ukraine was going to easily take back Crimea

You must not have been on these forums then when Western nations were discussing sending tanks to Ukraine.

but was never considered a likely result

Lol, ok. Soon you’ll be saying the same thing about all the territory Russia takes.

xor,

What do tanks have to die with Crimea lmao?

Well yeah, if Russia annexed the entirety of Ukraine, that would also be considered the unlikely maximal outcome

redlue,

What do tanks have to die with Crimea lmao?

Right. You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about.

xor,

Well thanks for clearing that up lmfao

redlue,

It’s always sad when people laugh while getting the wrong answer.

Reverendender,

Can we swap the Israel and Ukraine packages at least?

KevonLooney,

The Ukraine package is bigger.

saltesc,

Certainly bigger than Russia’s package.

Reverendender,

I am reading 1 billion for Ukraine and 26 billion for Israel. What am I reading wrong here?

KevonLooney,

That’s just the first part that the Pentagon is preparing. You should pay more attention to the news.

One of the bills provides $61 billion for Ukraine

reuters.com/…/long-awaited-aid-ukraine-israel-tai…

BombOmOm,

The Ukraine lethal aid bill voted by Congress is $60.8B and the Israel bill $26B.

This article is talking about how the first $1B of the $60.8B is being spent to help Ukraine.

Reverendender,

Thank you for clarifying for me!

xor,

The $1bn is the first batch of weapons being sent that were funded by the (now passed) $61bn allocation

The Israeli $26bn number is their version of Ukraine’s $61bn

RampantParanoia2365,

The article is poorly written. It definitely reads like Biden requested 61 billion, but only got 1b passed after it was stalled by Republicans. It even goes on to mention the 4 bills, but doesn’t clarify the grand total for Ukraine. Why not just say this is only the first package of the total amount?

surge_1,

If you mean also give the Islraili aid to Ukraine, I’m on board.

Reverendender,

That would even be preferable.

NOT_RICK,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

Ukraine is getting double what is apportioned for Israel. I learned much of their aid is for missile defense which is one of the things I don’t mind Israel doing.

Deceptichum,
@Deceptichum@sh.itjust.works avatar

So they can shoot their neighbours but remain safe from retaliation?

Nah fuck that, I mind Israel doing that.

The aggressor doesn’t need defense.

i_have_some_fries,

Who asked?

redlue,

Can’t Israel pay for its own missiles?

They’re a very wealthy nation.

NOT_RICK,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

I’d prefer that too, but I prefer defensive weapons to offensive ones shy of that.
