A QR code created from the actual fault text would be super helpful. That way we can scan it and get the full error message (details and all) on another device without having to snap a picture or something. But not like windows does it, where it’s a link to a defunct page. I’m taking about the actual text transcoded into a QR code.

Agreed. Probably the only One of the good thing about the win98 BSOD is that it crashed/froze along with the computer, and the PC required a hard reboot. Yeah, I know, not intentional, but it allowed me to fully read the message.

I was traveling this week, and saw a couple very obviously AI-generated billboards for the city’s downtown. Something about downtown eats or something. They were, and I’m being extremely nice here, absolutely hideous. I have never, in all my life, seen such ugly billboards. And, while they were different, they were basically the same thing (does that make sense? Them being different, but the same? Not really sure how else to describe it). I was actually looking for a place to eat, and those things deterred me from going downtown. Ended up finding this cute little coffeeshop in some random side road. No food, but holy crap the coffee and crepes were good!

I mean… they do have protein, fruits, and such, so, yes. But I was craving some pasta. I guess a crepe is like a sweet pasta. I did feel the craving vanish… …

Question on NC. The last time I used it, it stored all files in a db (sql of choice). Is it still doing that? Or are they in a folder structure now? I had an issue where the db file got corrupted, and I lost everything. I had a folder structure backup, because I didn’t trust sql for file storage, but it’s the reason I haven’t gone back to NC.

01189998819991197253,
@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

Not just you. It didn’t make sense to me either, which is why it struck me as odd, and why I kept a separate backup. This was a long while ago, so things, it seems, have changed (unsurprisingly with NC, for the better).

Maybe it was the lack of metadata? I’m not sure, it’s been a while since I used it last. I’ll try to spin it up again and see how it does for my usecase now. I really only used it for file storage.

I’m not a fan of automated data collection, regardless of the reason. I see the merit, though, but I won’t allow it. The post is very clear about the preserved anonymity of the collected data, which is good, and on how to easily opt out, which is great.

This statement, however, was a bit strange. Almost like they are being flippant on local laws. Since I know this isn’t the case here, they should have phrased it different. (Emphasis mine)

Your search activities are handled with the same level of confidentiality as all other data regardless of any local laws surrounding certain health services.

@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

That’s what I also understood. It’s just an odd, almost incorrect, phrasing. Unless our understanding is wrong, and they actually mean that they won’t follow the local laws if said laws require them to violate privacy.

Isn’t it already illegal to cover your face from above the nose downward in NC? I went there on a business trip a couple years before COVID, and wore a respirator while outside. A cop stopped me and told me that it’s against statute to cover my face in public places. I explained to him that I’m not from there and pollen in that state, at least in Charlotte, was horrific. He was understanding, but highly recommend I find another way. I thanked him and we parted ways. I was leaving the next day, so I didn’t find another way.

This article makes it sound that they’re not going to make it illegal, since it already is, but are, instead, going to make it a higher crime if you commit one while wearing a mask. What I’m gathering, is basically “wear one if you want. But if you commit a misdemeanor while wearing one, it’ll be a felony” (or however the scales increase). Did I misunderstand?

I’m fairly certain that the source for this is bank robbers of yore. But this goes under “we do this, because we’ve always done it that way”, and it’s the absolute worst reason to keep doing something. I, for one, enjoyed and supported my right to wear masks for the sole reason that it hid a good part of my face. Didn’t do much for facial recog, as we saw, but humans have a hard time identifying and remembering faces without seeing a mouth. I knew the masks weren’t real respirators and weren’t nearly as effective as they could have been (the reason I wore an actual respirator pre COVID and during), but I very much enjoyed the added privacy for everyone nonetheless.

@01189998819991197253@infosec.pub avatar

1: the reason I supported them before COVID, during, and now, and the reason I support their legalization.

But…

2: COVID has trained facial recog algorithms to identify masked faces. Those algorithms still have a hard time with identify altering makeup, but don’t seem to have any issues with masks. True privacy no longer exists. Freedom to protest in most countries is restricted to public spaces. When you privatize everything (including education), public spaces diminish, and your right to protest with it.

Windows only… Does this mean the maps created won’t work on Linux boxes? If I create the map on my windows burner, can I then use those maps on other, non-win devices?

Edit: I contacted support. To manage and create new maps, you need windows. However, those maps are then stored on the keyboard, and will work with any system (granted it supports kb entry, of course).

Shoot, I’d take that over booting up my burner for this. It would be cool if it worked inside Wine at least. Actually, if we’re doing drathers, I’d rather it be native to Linux (even as an appimage or snap).

After putting my account into "hibernation" for the past few weeks, I finally closed it. But I'm still looking for work. Thankfully I can still find positions (SRE and software dev) by just going directly to the company's site and finding a Jobs page.

Good luck to everyone else out there looking for work!

I have a 2010 running Mint LMDE, and it runs so much better than the Mac os x that it had did. The i5 is an Intel CPU, so it should be fully possible. Download a live image and boot from it. Test it out. If it works as expected, I stall. The 2010 has a screw off bottom, so I switched out the drive to preserve the original OS X, since the installation may not be available for much longer.

Edit: sorry I didn’t answer the “Is there anything apple does better than linux that deserves I don’t nuke it?” question. I like to answer these types of posts as impartial as possible. Since I don’t actually like Mac OS X’s UI and UX, I didn’t feel I could do that. I can only recommend that you as I did, and preserve the original drive if possible, so you can go back to Mac OS X if you want.

I put LMDE on my 2010, and it runs smooth as butter. Fedora Silverblue, as some one else stated, will give you the ability to run Linux as your main and have Macos in a drawer without the need to dual boot. If I needed Macos on mine, I would have gone this route, too.

Edit: personally, I prefer official images, so I would have installed the official Silverblue and not the community edition from uBlue, but whatever floats your boat.

I’ve been distrohopping for a while now, and eventually I landed on Arch. Part of the reason I have stuck with it is I think I had a balanced introduction, since I was exposed to both praise and criticism. We often discuss our favorite distros, but I think it’s equally important to talk about the ones that didn’t quite hit...

I do that at home (not the webmaster bit), but at work I’m usually in a hurry and switching between different admin panels, so it’s constantly set to something that will work with ABM, intune, and MS admin (there are more admin panels, but those the ones always giving me the “your browser is not supported” bs). Not chrome, though.
