Just a minor note, you shouldn’t call trans people “transgenders”, gramatically it’s the same as calling black people “blacks” and can come off as rude.

It renders a lot better on my phone, but this is why reader mode is a necessary feature for browsing the web on a smartphone.

Say what you want about Québec’s language laws; what’s a nuisance to American business interests is most likely good for the people.

“Bloody-minded nationalism” is a bit of an overstatement, don’t you think? Unless you’re going back over 50 years ago, Québec nationalism has been rather meek.

I have a lot of feelings about Québec’s language laws and its nationalism (I’m French-Canadian from outside Québec, for context) but I find it interesting how Québec making the use of its language necessary for participation in society is seen as nationalistic, even racist, yet Canada making English necessary for participation in society is seen as perfectly acceptable. I bet a lot of the same people who whine about Québec’s language laws would go berserk if they saw non-English signage dominate their community.

I did live in Québec a couple of years ago, but you’re right I’ve definitely spent most of the last decade outside Québec.

Do you have any arguments against my “hot take” or did you just feel like speculating on my living and work history?

But it doesn’t. Everywhere I turned in Ontario as an immigrant, I was offered bilingual services (in Toronto).

I appreciate your anecdotal evidence, but it remains anecdotal. I could go on about my own anecdotes living in a province which, on paper is officially bilingual, but where I struggle to receive services in French. Even workplaces in Francophone-majority areas barely accommodate unilingual French speakers. I suspect your experience is far from the norm.

And their reasoning for implementing the laws is nothing more than racism, xenophobia and to fuck with the “anglos”

Look, I won’t pretend racism and xenophobia aren’t issues in Québecois society, they are and that deserves to be addressed. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool. What I take issue with is equating any and all measures to protect the French language with racism and xenophobia. Are the methods the current CAQ government using to supposedly “protect French” often steeped in racism and xenophobia? I definitely think they are. But the concept of French preservation is much larger than the CAQ’s definition of it. Québecois.es have not too distant memories of being second-class citizens under a rich Anglophone elite, I think anyone should understand why they would be apprehensive at multinational business interests entering the province and not giving any fucks about French.

A government incurring debt isn’t inherently bad, but I have a hard time imagining a sustainable and effective way to rake up an 8.4 trillion debt in four years.

He’s been PM during times of hardship. That’s pretty much it. That and Conservatives parroting for the last 5 years that every single thing wrong in this country is directly and individually Trudeau’s fault.

Most things blamed on Trudeau are either international events affecting every country, or stuff that’s actually under the jurisdiction of the (mostly Conservative) provincial governments or municipalities.

He has done some things that are actually worth resenting, but most Canadians criticising Trudeau don’t give a fuck about blackface or corruption scandals, they just want to whine about carbon tax and minorities.

Facebook degrading Firefox user experience now?

Recently, most images on Facebook have stopped loading for me. Sometimes it’s just a few images. Other times it’s almost all images. The longer I scroll, the worse it gets. Today, I couldn’t even see my own pictures. Are any other Firefox users having this problem, or maybe it’s a server issue on Facebook’s end?

I imagine they’d rather you use their mobile apps than navigate to the website via a browser. They can collect more data on you that way.

In what scenario would you need to type in a password on a non-smart TV though? Parental lock?

The list has been added to haveibeenpwned.com, you can check your passwords here.

100% just slipped that in there for SEO purposes due to the current trendiness of “AI”.

YouTube screwing itself with adblockers again

I use Firefox and uBlock Origin. Not sure what kind of experience anyone else is having with YouTube, but recently my home page has been empty because I “don’t have watch history turned on”. Okay, fine. I won’t be able to browse suggested videos, and I’ll spend less time on their platform....

If pasting into yt-dlp works for you, go ahead, but if you (or anyone reading) wants a more user-friendly experience, I recommend FreeTube for desktop and LibreTube for mobile.

Both these apps strip ads, respect your privacy, and have Sponsorblock built-in. You can import your subscriptions from YouTube via csv.

EDIT: Forgot to mention SmartTube for Android TV, which blocks ads and has Sponsorblock but is less privacy-respecting as you have to login to your YouTube account.

I’ve been playing Counter-Strike for over a decade and I still can’t handle the LoL community. That alone should indicate how toxic it is.

I can kinda see how this might happen, I bet statements affirming “Australia doesn’t exist” are more common on the internet than ones stating “Australia exists”.

Frightening to think of the all the data fed to these LLMs, a lot of it has to be incoherent ramblings or straight-up trolling.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

On the off chance you aren’t aware, you can export your YT subs and import them into Invidious via a json file.

I still occasionally visit the actual YouTube frontpahe for the algorithm’s suggestions, but all my subscriptions live on Piped, FreeTube, and on my phone, LibreTube.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m usually against standalone apps for websites, but YouTube is one I definitely use enough to justify it, and Google seems intent on making the experience as miserable as possible. I use LibRedirect to send my browser to Piped instances, but FreeTube is much better for keeping track of my subscriptions.

WTF are they crying to Apple for?

They aren’t? I didn’t see anything in the headline, the article, or the change.org petition about them crying to Apple.

From the petition: “[Sign to urge] Belkin and other tech producers to recognize the demand for the Belkin ADC to DVI cable or a suitable alternative”

I totally forgot how terrible a non-ad-free YouTube experience is

So I’ve been using youtube ad blockers since pretty much when ad blocker extensions were first available. Lately though I’ve been getting hit more and more with these messages that YT was sending out every 5 or so videos telling me that adblockers aren’t allowed. No problem, just gotta wait 5 seconds to x it out and then...

after a quick look into it, the main problem is tax in a lot of places is based on the Total amount sold, not on each item.

I’m actually confused, aren’t taxes a percentage? The sum of a percentage of all items should be the same as a percentage of the sum, no? Or is my brain not do math good? Can someone smarter than me explain?

This was a lot more fun to play with than expected. I’ll just wait for someone to write a plugin or app which uses this game as a password generator for KeePass.

That is really beautifully animated. Tenacious D always have fun music videos!

I’d say the best way is probably to post and comment stuff you’d want to see. Participate actively.

It’s harder to change a community’s vibe after its been established, so now is the best time to get some social inertia and make this into a more pleasurable space than /r/Canada.
