Kolanaki, to gaming in What type of game do you want to play that doesn't really exist?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

I want several parts of several games merged together. I want DF’s level of complexity, set in space, with parts of Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen, and a more comprehensive system of adjusting power to systems. Like I want to be in a big battle and if I get damaged on the right side, I have to actually route power through undamaged systems in a more complex way than just “weapons, shields, engines” with no regard to the power conduits in your ship that may or may not exist after a big hole’s been blasted in ya.

I want to capture the essence of the random shit the crew says in a fight in Star Trek, without it just being a simple flip of a switch. I want “fake science” that I can perform… Like sending various forms of energy through the deflector dish to do stuff. I can’t even really describe it because it’s one of those things that really isn’t even possible with a modern video game. It would require dynamics that I don’t think you can code with traditional systems; it would need quantum computing or some kind of AI to create new elements of the game on the fly.

It’s pretty good for what it is. I can see many fans finding it to be great if they only came across it recently or was their first shooter/doom game.

I liked it for what it was, but I wasn’t a big fan merely because I expected the old kind of level design. I expected it with the 2016 and Eternal reboots, too and is why I’m not particularly keen on those, either.

I was and still am a bigger fan of the original kind of level design. Not quite open world, but also not just hallways connecting arenas/a straight shot through from point A to point B. Set piece design can still work if the entire level is the set piece and, IMO, better if it’s fully explorable and not something that funnels you down a single path.

@thingsiplay They would have to know the encryption algorithm to emulate it in the first place, wouldn’t they? Couldn’t you just… Not emulate that part or use it to figure out how to break it easier?

Them believing it isn’t the same thing as actually being ok.

I don’t know why a few of these emulators require stuff from real hardware in the first place. Bleem didn’t and wasn’t passing around copyrighted material, yet every other PS1 and PS2 emulators I know of require .BIN files dumped from a real unit. This is the main thing behind Dolphin being taken off Steam; they’re distributing a thing that is violating a copyright. Surely there is a way around this Wii key bullshit the same way Bleem was able to operate without an actual playstation BIOS, right?

Well I can tell you never actually played in that era, because it did happen. Just on the SLAUGHTERHOUSE TF2 servers, in which I myself was an admin, would kick players who completely dominated a game over to another server where they would fit in better. This was a pretty common practice. Not to mention the admins who power tripped and would kick anyone who killed them too often or claim everyone better than they were was cheating.

If anything it happens more in the unmoderated matchmaking systems because there are no admins.

You can compete against each other for points in L4D while not actually playing the adversarial/competitive mode.

You can kill each other in Portal 2’s co-op by being a dick with your side of the portal.

They’re the only things I can think of that are a gray area and not pretty well defined.

This is still an issue with matchmaking systems intended to keep the game balanced in developer controlled servers though, so I don’t know what the relevance is.

Co-op games that let you troll your buddy?

Things like L4D’s primary mode and Portal 2’s co-op mode.

Another name for them would be adversarial multiplayer. But, basically yes. Anything where there would be winners and losers is what I would call a competitive game.

Though others narrow it down further to more high skill adversarial games like Quake and Counter-Strike and League of Legends/DOTA for their professional competitive leagues.

I just disable voice chat these days. Makes the game (any game) so much better.

PC, and then whatever the current generation consoles are (assuming they remain just Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft so there are only 3).

Now I have access to every game ever. Mostly on PC due to having a larger back catalogue and through emulation.

If I am not allowed the PC due to it “not being a console” then I will use a modded Xbox instead and still have emulation and the ability to install windows for all those PC games.

I am willing to bet that Microsoft knows damn well how rabid the hardcore COD fans are that they wouldn’t stop producing the game for a certain console, even just to sell more consoles. It wouldn’t be worth it.
