I don’t know if this is the correct community to post this. I have a Smart TV from a Greek manufacturer named TurboX. Not Android TV, Smart TV. This means that it has Internet access, has some pre-installed apps, but I can’t install any other apps on it. The menus thankfully don’t have any ads. However, the Youtube app...
People around here like to pretend Netflix, Hulu and the like don’t exist. A HTPC will be neither user-friendly or remotely good quality in this fashion. Most programs will be limited to 720p if you use linux. No you cannot control it with a remote, you’ll need a keyboard and mouse.
Yesterday, there was a live scheduled by Louis Grossman, titled “Addressing futo license drama! Let’s see if I get fired…”. I was unable to watch it live, but now the stream seems to be gone from YouTube....
I appreciate the thought but it seems unlikely that your company will be interested in such things. They don’t want you to have control over the products.
As for a generic notes platform my favorite is crypt.ee
It’s paid but they give you 100mb “free forever”, which is more than enough for a whole lot of text-based notes.
Best part is it works like Google docs where there is an offline cache so you don’t have to sit there and stare at it for 10 seconds waiting for it to decrypt.
They’re centered in Estonia.
As for hand-written notes, I like RNote but don’t really use it much, as I can’t get my Wacom or Lenovo or MS pens to work on Linux. But there’s nothing that comes close to OneNote in that regard.
Today EU governments will not adopt their position on the EU regulation on “combating child sexual abuse”, the so-called chat control regulation, as planned, which would have heralded the end of private messages and secure encryption. The Belgian Council presidency postponed the vote at short notice.
I have completely stopped using google services and software on my personal devices (even have lineageos + microg on my phone. The problem is that I can’t just explain to the technically uneducated people that I changed mail providers. How should I go about doing this?
Threading and formatting. Trying to decipher who said what and when. The increasingly ridiculous size of signatures in every email. Being dropped from an email thread because someone hit reply instead of reply-all. Or the opposite. Being unable to leave email chains. Creating a new email chain every time you send a new subject. Trying to find absolutely anything in my inbox due to the absolute disarray of it all.
Of course Gmail specifically introduces a whole other level of bullshit. Like a completely broken search function, and the inability to block anyone (spammers), the “all mail” option not showing all mail, folders being collapsed in the sidebar and fucking react emojis…
I mean it’s not ideal but still better than email.
Signal is a non-profit that could go tits-up at any time and then suddenly we would have no more communication. Whereas Matrix is not dependent on the Matrix Foundation to function. It’s just a protocol, much like email.
It saddens me to admit, but google maps is by far the best maps app, ig all that stalking does come in handy. OSM just doesn’t have nearly as much data or information about certain places...
The way modding is right now is perfect, at least from a user’s perspective. You get everything for free but if you can afford it and want to then you can donate to the creator.
I’m sure it’s “perfect” if you’re a leech that just wants everything for free.
Reality is that 99% won’t ever pay a single dollar for anything if they don’t absolutely have to.
While I agree Bethesda only gives a shit about Bethesda, I do think there needs to be a path for paid mods, as that will greatly increase the quantity and quality of mods.
I’m running OpenSUSE leap 15.5, When I was on the linux mint, I was using warpinator but using it on openSUSE is troublesome and I wish there was a linux version of blip but unfortunately there is not.
How is it possible, that Signal still only provides a .deb package and no .rpm, or even better AppImage or Flatpak? There is an unofficial Flatpak but is it secure?
Hey. Well I’ve got a thinkpad running with fedora 40. I wanted to plug the TV in, with HDMI, but nothing happened. So how do I activate it? Its a Lenovo T470
That’s a very humble thing to say and I would argue makes him even more of a hero.
What is a hero? Someone who makes personal sacrifice for the good of others? Someone who risks enduring the worst possible scenario for no reason other than to expose blatant corruption of the highest order, to protect civil liberties of hundreds of millions? Not sure I could think of anyone more deserving of the title.
iMessage is an app. Android is an operating system. I think what you meant to say is iMessage doesn’t support RCS.
The difference is Apple worked hard to keep it this way for decades, even so far as “patch” a fix that was created to make it possible for their customers to communicate securely with Android users.
And Apple is only going to support RCS because they were forced to, and they’ll on comply to the degree that they think they can get away with. Just like they’re doing with app stores.
About “Proprietary App Store”: the store itself and many apps on there are proprietary
Doesn’t matter. The point is that devs have to jump through completely arbitrary hoops and pay Apple money just to make their apps available to Apple users. And any money they take they have to give 30% of the income to Apple for the privilege of running it on their hardware.
About “Gaslighting their customers”: I’d like to see hard proof on that.
There isn’t any. But all you have to do is look at their actions.
I’m not saying iPhones don’t have their advantages but you don’t understand what the actual problem is. And it comes off as intentional.
I don’t know that that’s true. But regardless, I agree and wish they decided on a more open protocol, but that is just not the corporate way. Anything is better than SMS/MMS.
There’s no shortage of options for doing that.
Sure. Ask yourself why Apple users don’t use them? The answer is SMS fallback. A feature which you can use with any app on Android and literally only with iMessage on iOS.
It’s probably even true that someone would have exploited the technique Beeper Mini was using to send spam if Apple hadn’t closed it.
Well Apple doesn’t seem to give a single fuck about SMS spam, so I’m not sure what your point is. Google at least incorporates spam filtering.
I was thinking about using graphene OS, but I’ve read some lemmy users dislike this OS due to perceived misleading advertising and the pixel 7a you’re supposed to install graphene on because it’s from google (an advertising company)....
dislike this OS due to perceived misleading advertising
It’s a non-profit, there is no advertising.
and the pixel 7a you’re supposed to install graphene on because it’s from google (an advertising company).
Yeah I dunno what that’s supposed to mean. You can’t install it on an iPhone or most other Android devices because they all have locked bootloader’s (among other reasons). They only develop for Pixel because it streamlines the development process, along with having the highest level of security in the SoC.
Another option would be lineage OS
Lineage is a great project, and fairly private, but as the name implies, it’s intended for older phones to increase their life. Not necessarily to be private.
