jwt,

Huh, I thought I recently read China accused the US of tricking China into invading Taiwan but that they won’t take the bait.

I guess this is what ‘not taking the bait’ translates to in Chinese?

jwt,

Except that the download numbers don’t correspond at all with the population numbers.

jwt,

Surely they can’t both be true at the same time though, right? Either governments are rightfully not participating in a price-gouging racket, or they are cheapskates not willing to pay pharma companies.

Kremlin bots spam internet with fake celebrity quotes against Ukraine (kyivindependent.com)

Russian bots with a Kremlin disinformation network published 120,000 fake anti-Ukraine quotes falsely attributed to celebrities, including Jennifer Aniston and Scarlett Johansson, in one day, the independent Russian media outlet Agentsvo reported June 15....

Chinese military harassed Dutch warship enforcing UN sanctions on North Korea, Netherlands says (www.cnn.com)

A Dutch warship was harassed by Chinese military aircraft in the East China Sea on Friday, the Netherlands said, becoming the latest country to accuse Beijing’s forces of initiating potentially unsafe encounters in international waters....

Hey, what else are you gonna do if you’re craving some prime rib.

jwt,

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

jwt,

I’ve got this tiger-repelling rock to sell you.

jwt,

You have deduced incorrectly that I have any thought about her whatsoever. I’m merely pointing out that your reasoning is flawed and therefore invalid.

jwt,

She is still alive so she must’ve made a deal with the drugs cartel is a classic “Post hoc ergo propter hoc” fallacy. It is all speculation.

jwt,

What is a certainty was that a dozen+ candidates were murdered, but there weren’t any attempts of her or her family.

This means precisely nothing, as explained by the fallacy mentioned before.

It doesn’t make it untrue or very unlikely, though

But you called it ‘probably’ though, which is on the complete other end of the spectrum from ‘very unlikely’… (aside from it being very unlikely to me, if all I have to go on is unrelated events, someone not being dead, and nothing else)

jwt,

Ha exactly my thought!

I also noticed when the drag-and-drop occurred I could no longer hover over the folders in my bookmarkbar. Hadn’t yet found the willingness to find out what was going on, but nice to hear it’s solved.

jwt,

I’ve always had a pretty sinical view about the Chinese.

You must be real paranoid if you think Canonical made bot accounts to promote snaps on Lemmy.

Bunch of old dudes dying while using a notoriously risky mode of transportation in bad weather over tricky terrain, while the only thing pointing to Israel thus far is motive. I’d say low.

jwt,

No the sample size is ~5000, which is pretty OK if representative of the population (big if though)

Hence the big if

jwt,

I think this is the way to go if it doesn’t frustrate further development too much. Kinda risky to pull the old app out of stores and see the blissfully unaware part of your userbase leave for a competitor.

Legitimate interest? (lemmy.world)

I never consent to give my data away or being tracked, but how do you deal with so called legitimate interest? I tried several times to untick them but it is a long list (in fact at the bottom there is a “vendors” link with even longer, much longer list. It took me 10 minutes to get to the bottom of it once)....

jwt,

“If it’s a legitimate interest, the browser has ways to try to shut that whole thing down”

jwt,

Manbabies with insecurities about their own sexuality is my best guess. Oh, and religion of course, but that goes without saying.

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I’m working on a some materials for a class wherein I’ll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we’re including a section we’re calling “foot guns”. Basically it’s ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

jwt,

And then accidentally copy/pasting the failed attempt code snippets of the OP describing the situation.

jwt,

Oh you ‘loan’ nuclear weapons do you? Lmao

jwt,

Huh that phrasing is actually a thing? TIL. Not really sure it conveys situation properly though. Like saying you share chlamydia.

jwt,

That’s not the reason though.

jwt,

We control the weapon on their land but they get to drop it in a war.

That’s a contradictio in terminis. There’s no way the US lets other counties decide when to drop their nuclear bomb.

The real reason of course is the US wants influence, and the countries it wants influence over agree to it to get other shit done.

jwt,
  1. Contents of the agreement are not referenced in the article
  2. If the US has to authorize it, then no the other country doesn’t ‘get to drop the bomb’. The country gets to push the red button when US says ‘fire’.

And as I stated before, the nukes aren’t deployed in those countries because the countries want them there, it’s because the US want them there, and has the ‘persuasiveness’ to get them there.

jwt,

In Germany, we have a word for that

That goes without saying ;)

jwt,

You really shouldn’t call their P gross.

jwt,

Yes, excellent name! I wonder what one WAR would do on the currency market.

jwt,

I think they’re talking Kmail from the KDE app suite. I thought they meant K-9 mail.
Btw If I remember correctly K-9 mail is or is becoming Thunderbird.

jwt,

FYI: If you hear someone talking about encrypting passwords (instead of hashing); big red flag that they don’t know what they’re doing.

jwt, (edited )

Not a dig at you btw, but at the people trying to convince us they care about security.

No shit! Even when I was at “for the 6th” time, I somehow was deeply invested in reading he “engaged in dying for the 6th time”.

Whats your thoughts on Ai in your terminal? (www.warp.dev)

Today i was doing the daily ritual of looking at distrowatch. Todays reveiw section was about a termal called warp, it has built in AI for recomendations and correction for commands (like zhs and nushell). You can also as a chatbot for help. I think its a neat conscept however the security is what makes me a bit skittish. They...

jwt,

For me to even consider using AI in my terminal, it’d have to meet a couple of requirements:

  • needs to be open source
  • needs to be run without network access
  • needs to be an extensible utility to any terminal program.

(And that’s off the top of my head.)

jwt,

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Dude is super racist.

jwt,

They’re two sides of the same coin. Y’all Qaeda living up to its name once more.

jwt,

As long as I have my aliases working and I can strip away unnecessary gui clutter, I’m fine with whatever.
