Ain’t nobody want this

However, he also clarified that plans for this were not finalized yet, and if it were to happen, it would be optional for VLC users.

Happy to see some sanity prevails.

Having read the article, it sounds like the logical evolution of VLC. FAST Channels are here to stay and they actually are a vital thing in a world where Google have a monopoly on online video. While they’re not what I would go for, I’m glad they’re available as even my cable provider offers FAST channels.

Will be interesting to see VLC compete with JWPlayer and the various forks of it.

Also I don’t think anyone disagrees that the core needs rewriting and the UI needs a refresh. Wonder when Android will start seeing these builds on the beta channel.

This is a weird one. On the one hand, we have Mozilla, the last remaining browser company not sucking at the teat of either Google or Apple and we all expect for Mozilla to somehow generate enough money to pay enough employees to stay competitive on the other hand we have the users who expect them not to do anything to try and leverage their userbase to create financial independence.

The problem with Mozilla remains the same problem that they’ve had for a while. Mozilla doesn’t acknowledge the symbiotic relationship it has with its community and the community always over reacts, which means there’s a chasm where simple things should be easy but they’re not.

Take this for example, Mozilla only had to have a public facing discussion about this and then go and do it anyway.

Sometimes paying lip service works. But since they didn’t, you have people like OP who feel like something nefarious is happening and in the end Firefox users lose out as things like donations being pulled hurt.

Mozilla already shows ads, as do all the other browsers, however unlike the other browsers, you have a fully functioning uBlock that can and will remove anything that the preferences don’t cover.

My post covers all of your points.

Tumblr and Wordpress to Sell Users’ Data to Train AI Tools (www.404media.co)

this could not be timed worse for Tumblr which is in huge hot water with its userbase already for its CEO breaking his sabbatical to ban a prominent trans user for allegedly threatening him (in a cartoonish manner), and then spending a week personally justifying it increasingly wildly across several platforms. the rumors had...

Ubuntu is a great gateway distro. When I dumped Windows back in the Windows 10 days, Ubuntu made it an easy transition, time elapsed and there were things that didn’t work right that I found frustrating. I eventually ended up trying out Fedora and the rest was history. I’m glad you found a good fit for you.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

What kind of issues did you run into if you don’t mind me asking? I jumped ship from Ubuntu just when they started with the snap nonsense, so things I found egregious, like them dropping Unity, aren’t really valid in the grand scheme of things.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

I can see why you would recommend it. For me though, it’s too close to the Windows UX. I try and make people break away from what they know in order to have the cleanest transition.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

The fact that you report bugs you find makes you nothing short of a legend.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Exactly this. I actually thought Windows was going to do something radical when they dumped the start menu, but people hate change and so they were forced to bring it back

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Bloody hell, that’s a tremendous post. Thanks for taking the time to write it.

I can totally see why anyone would abandon Linux with those problems. But at least now we all know just to send you round if anyone is having problems 😏

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

It’s funny because I always thought I would go full unixporn and when I finally got to Linux, I was so happy with how it looked, I never got around to looking into things like Sway properly.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Even if it can’t be proven that some of the problems were stock Ubuntu’s fault, I would still like to blame Ubuntu because they do some really dodgy things. Like the second dock 😒 it seems so trivial, but why wouldn’t they remove the old dock first. Decisions like that tell me other things won’t be right

@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

You have no idea how many times I keep coming back to this. That font is gorgeous. Truth be told, that’s a very solid set-up.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

How often are you jumping back to Windows?

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

It still has FAT32 support. I think that’s the last thing.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

I would argue that no one should install any snaps.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Absolutely agree with that.

sabreW4K3,
@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

Microsoft are such weirdos. It’s like they’re trying to empower Google, who will lap up all of the users they abandon as they install Chrome OS, because let’s be honest, the average Jo seldom just installs Linux, so they’ll say, “oh I’ve heard of Chrome, let me try that”

It’s assinine that these companies keep investing in ideas that A/ Rely on video and B/ Rely on the majority of their content creators contributing their content for free.

The only thing that Twitch was ever going to do was drive traffic elsewhere. Hence why Amazon bought them. But they failed to get good at being Twitch. It still sucks in terms of performance and there’s no subsidiary platform for Twitch clips. Also didn’t they chase off most of their adult content creators?

So they’re basically trying to be profitable off of traditional advertising? Ha!

That’s years away though right? Even if we get some this year, they’ll be very immature. When you look at Arm based stuff, especially the Pi 5 and similar, it goes without saying that their time is now.

@sabreW4K3@lemmy.tf avatar

There’s an interesting article about the thoughts of one of the Raspberry Pi founders on RISC-V here jeffgeerling.com/…/what-eben-upton-said-about-ris…

I’m guessing we won’t see a RISC-V version any time soon.

Seems like the perfect service for a file manager company or even a notes company. Not sure how to make this a valuable part of my web browsing life.

realcaseyrollins, to technology

From generative AI to the Apple Vision Pro headset, here are the tech developments that scored big this year.

Terrible list and that’s even if you ignore them starting the list with Threads. The true winners are the EU and Valve. Everything else is kinda meh or marred by scandal. The EU because the impact of the USB C law is massive. I’m already seeing tonnes of tech pivot, including Apple and the cheap shit you see on AliExpress. But also Valve, because I don’t think anyone saw the Steam Deck becoming what it has.

We’re not talking about installing Linux or anything close. We’re talking about downloading an app, paying for an IPTV subscription and a VPN. 🫠

Someone mentioned, either in this thread or another thread going outside and I found that amusing as in the same way that people used to come into pubs to sell pirate DVDs, they’re now selling Android TV boxes and fire sticks for £100. You’d be surprised at what the layman knows.
