What Are the Best Ideas for Using LineageOS with Root and microG? (github.com)

I have OnePlus 7 Pro that I successfully flashed with LineageOS 21 with MicroG. Do you have some interesting apps or ideas to take advantage of it? I thought of some Magisk modules. Maybe someone is more experience than me! This is the spare smartphone, the main one is GrapheneOS, so I don’t mind breaking stuff.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

No, I have never heard of it. Thanks!

I don’t even know what Kernelsu is. Magisk is already applied to the phone, never thought there are alternatives.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Any guidance on this?

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Let’s see how apps will adapt it.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Google Play and their services are so tightly integrated with Android, no wonder GrapheneOS did their sandbox… However, I thought of doing the same with microG.

@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

lsposed manager

I don’t know what that is.

it hides root much better

To me, that’s the funniest thing. I come from Linux and I want to have - let’s say administrator (root) of my Android, which is also Linux as far I know. I know the Android is praised for its security, but come on, I wish to have control over my system as a working System Admin. That’s the main purpose of my set-up. How come, any app can just check whether I have root or not? That’s some bullshit.

  1. Custom ROM - LineageOS
  2. microG so I don’t use proprietary Google Play Services
  3. and root so I can have full control over my smartphone
Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

KernelSU is unsafe

Is any root safe though?

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

From the security standpoint, I think rooting is always against the security. That’s why DivestOS and GrapheneOS are against it, and it shouldn’t be tried. However, I was interested in Shizuku that also is some another hole to patch up when exploited.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

So you’re suggesting more “network” control. I like it.

AFWall+

I use NetGuard, but I don’t see any benefits from having root in it.

PcapDroid

Hmm, interesting, I think the closest thing that I use now is TrackerControl.

AdAway

I’m using my VPN “socket” with TrackerControl.

define your own custom firewall rules is very powerful

Yeah, and also easy to mess up connections so they no longer work properly. 😆

I redirect all DNS requests to my own DNS with a custom rule (for apps, like Termux, using hardcoded DNS lookups instead of what the phone is set to)

That seems cool. For now, I’m using Mullvad’s public DNS service. See their dns-blocklists.

I also know App Manager, and I’m using it and with root it with ease blocks any necessary trackers and other things. Have you tried it?

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

In what way?

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah I btrfs-restore and btrfs-rescue. However do they work on not allocated drive but once was btrfs?

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

I tried it yesterday with SystemRescue, but nothing found that I wanted.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah I agree and understand. I guess btrfs is too young compared to exts file systems.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Those are for snapshots not like data crawing. More like a backup your data tool than you fucked up but maybe something is written so you can have it back.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah but backup is the most optimistic scenario. I’m looking for something that really bad happened and maybe the data wasn’t overwritten so I can find it and copy.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

R-Linux seems nice but I don’t see any mention about BTRFS…

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

with ext4 or btrfs?

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah I tried it with Windows too.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Ah I starred it on GitHub. I like the RainViewer!

Probably I will add it soon, thanks. :)

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

video transcoder

It looks nice but also abandoned. :c

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

No problem, I’m glad you like it! I had with OSS Document Scanner too, but not with Image Toolbox.

The basic edit is fine in many Gallery apps if you’re looking for it. The Image Toolbox is fine with UI even modern, but when you look for quick edit I understand.

No worries, we all know that FOSS software is imperfect and not polished like some enormous alternatives like you’ve mentioned edit on Instagram… It’s mostly 1 main contribution up to 10 - 20 vs many very well-paid developers that were working on it until it works perfectly with spying. 😆

I added to suggestion of apps project InnerTube, thanks. ;)

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

It kinds has it? Anti-Features | F-Droid

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

This way, you get me a little hyped for these. ;)

Looks excellent and nice, but I dislike this:

Magic Earth is a closed-source mobile app providing free worldwide navigation based on OpenStreetMap data and free speed cameras in 59 countries, available for no charge.

Not open source…

However, the Privacy Policy looks nice. 😁

And yeah, I will be this year on Mastadon, just having a tough time with college…

Also, Yuito is the fork of Tusky. What are the advantages? I don’t see Yuito on F-Droid when Tasky is.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, maybe I’ll too.

Great, thanks!

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

How would you implement it then? 🤔

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Very customizable. :)

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Is it that really good compared to Jerboa?

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

And is it that awesome compred to the others?

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Why?

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Jerboa comes from the same dev as Lemmy does, so I “trust” that he know its bests. But I will try Voyager.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

The concept of it wouldn’t require code, just some idea to implement that you don’t have to agree to do. I’m just trying to get your point and visualize through creativity and brainstorm.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Start with first, and why is it a shitter alternative?

Psyhackological, (edited )
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

I see it’s on GitHub and F-Droid. I will test it and add it soon, thanks. :)

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, don’t know why the only thing that remains from the gestures is navigation…

I mean the top-left corner of my smartphone when unlocked. I have hours and minutes and I want seconds too.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Is how broken? Does not work whatsoever or launch?

And Medito is more than a basic meditation timer, it has free lessons and so on.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Ah I see… it’s the fresh issue. Is it everywhere or just GitHub release?

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Holy shit it works, thank you! Even after uninstalling it after I did everything I wanted.

Why are they hidding it in built-in settings? Isn’t that a developer options or hidden features tab in Android for?

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

I’ll keep an eye out for it. Hope a new release come and that’s it.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Thanks! 😄

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah but it’s hit or miss. But I like the idea. Sometimes apps just name themselves with prefix of “Material”.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Exactly… But thanks to you I have it now. 😄

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

That is why someone created FFUpdater.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Is there a Waterfox for Android?

I understand but just like one said “cybersec is just a panic control”. I don’t know if you are really really vulnerable especially when non-harden updated Firefox is more vulnerable and less secure than hardened a little outdated forks. If that’s not a crticial CVE I don’t see an issue on my GrapheneOS. Google could convince you not to use Firefox and use Chromium instead because they can control security for you not Mozilla so it also depends on perspective.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

At least that’s my opinion. Oh… But I can’t seem to find it in any F-Droid repos.

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

Cashew

Looks great, thanks!

Psyhackological,
@Psyhackological@lemmy.ml avatar

It is still hidden, but one of the reasons why the native Linux version is better than Proton.

Asynchronous saving

Many of you might not be aware that Factorio has support for saving your game in the background, without freezing while it does so. This feature is tucked away in the hidden settings and only works on macOS and Linux. This is one great example of taking advantage of a platform’s features to benefit the game, which would not be available to us if we simply went through Proton.

Asynchronous saving works by using the fork syscall to essentially duplicate the game. The primary instance - the one you interact with - continues playing, but the newly forked child runs the saving process then exits on completion. I have used it for many years and have never had issues, but the setting remains hidden because there are a few unsolved problems with it and it requires a significant amount of RAM to work.

I would love to promote this feature away from its hidden status in 2.0. If you are playing on Linux or macOS, please enable asynchronous saving (ctrl+alt+click Settings -> “The rest” -> non-blocking-saving) and report any issues you find. I am particularly interested in reproducing a seemingly random freeze that occurs at the end of the process. Thank you in advance!
