dysprosium,

any idea why? Perhaps it’s the same as the gnome-mentality, following a very strict philosophy?

De-googling and privacy on Sony xperia

I have been considering replacing my nearly 7 year old iPhone (although very reluctant) and I was checking for options. Really the only phone that caught my eye was the Sony xperia 1 V, but I found no information about how to degoogle and lock down the device. I really like the features and the built in camera apps, etc. Is...

FOSS Media Playback Device

I want to create a minimal install for mpv playback through jellyfin-mpv-shim and macast. this is going to be a base for a FOSS media sink akin to a Chromecast. you attach it to your TV and it plays whatever you send it, like movies from your jellyfin server and youtube/vimeo/piped/etc videos. otherwise, there’s no interaction...

dysprosium,

So basically a personalized FOSS chromecast device? Also, howd you send the media links? Via ssh?

dysprosium,

can dbzer0 users comment here on lemmy.world?

dysprosium,

well see my post I made. Apparently there can be sync issues that are quite apparent.

dysprosium,

well the sync issues im talking about are quite specific use cases which you wouldnt encounter on the regular. See my post for reference. It’s about searching specific communities on difference instances from another instance. Then, only the communities with very little traffic will not be synced. I’ve no idea what my instance’s latest version is. Can a non-admin even check that?

dysprosium,

If it’s the latest version, then talking to instance admins wouldn’t be of any help, because every instance suffers from the same issue…

dysprosium,

I see, thanks. I’d love to use Win in a VM but I doubt it’s as flawless as on metal. For example, would WebSerial API work as well? Idk, maybe.

dysprosium,

depends heavily on amount of data and cpu speed. I wouldn’t wanna interrupt though

dysprosium,

I thought so too, but apparently you can. I saw people on youtube do it on their active C partition

dysprosium,

weirdly enough I feel the same. Maybe those were the WinXP times

dysprosium,

But is that still recommended on an ssd? Defragging for higher success of shrinking an active partition?

dysprosium,

I’m not sure whether this is equivalent, but the free space was on the left of the root partition, so I first moved the root partition to the left of the free space, then extended it to the right. It probably took twice as long. And maybe the risk is the same, I’ve no idea

dysprosium,

So I finally did it. Results?

First was unable to shrink in windows due to a bunch of reasons, but I overcame them: hibernation file, page®file, and other bullcrap.

Finally, I could shrink. Then, a fatal error in the shrinking process. I ignored it. Waited few minutes and the disk seemed to have shrunk after all. Weird.

Then proceeded as planned. GParted the rest. All is working fine now!

Moral of the story? None.

dysprosium,

It’s never getting “better” only perhaps “less worse”. There are no plans to reverse the climate change. Not yet …

dysprosium,

Asking the real question here. I hope there is a one way solution per application. But I doubt it. I hope you don’t get the usual answer that it’s “absolutely necessary” for security.

dysprosium,

What is the system32 equivalent in linux

dysprosium,

Why in the shitfuck would anyone feel the urge to throw coins at a fking plane? Ashame this was not highlighted in the summary

dysprosium,

I might ask a dumb question as well… But how does a passenger even accomplish that? From inside the plane? Just before boarding? On a high tower throwing coins downward on a low flying plane? Wutttt

dysprosium,

Yeah I figured. Still at a loss for words

dysprosium,

Same setup but with gnome. My video screen recorder broke: simplescreenrecorder for which I have not yet found a solution.

Also Mathpix anyone familiar? Just straigh out don’t work

dysprosium, (edited )

Tiktok is the only major social media platform that doesn’t demand a phone number to register or verify identity.

Ohh such a relief! It’s not that it tracks a billion other things from the user

killing the only somewhat independent social media platform is a dictatorship style move.

Feels weird calling a super big company “independent” in a good way

dysprosium,

Does the keyboard work as expected if you switch to a text console (eg. Ctrl+Alt+F2)?

I’ll try as soon as possible. But I do need to mention it only occurs at the login screen, not the lock screen. Perhaps this rules out package or extension issues, but I’ll try reinstalling libinput either way, and fiddle with 3rd party extensions. Thanks for your reply

dysprosium,

it only happens after reboot. And after that there is no problem at all

dysprosium,

I hate to admit it but perhaps it is not such a bad advice…

dysprosium, (edited )

so why would Envdeavor not experience this issue? Does it simply not have the AUR? That’s very unfortunate. Or are they simply not holding back like in Arch Manjaro?

dysprosium,

It said I not found or something. I’ll try again tomorrow for full error message

dysprosium,

I didn’t uninstall lightdm. I was under the impression that startx would just start the GUI, regardless of what “engine” it’s running on.

dysprosium, (edited )

Question 1: what’s in your .xinitrc?

www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/ei9hajgzugfs4qnmg9r1f/h?rl…

It also contains the logs people mentioned I should check. The Xorg.0* files are from the day of the crash, and 2 days later, when I booted again, the other files were created: Xorg.1*

Question 2: why are you starting X this way?

I was under the impression that startx would just start the GUI regardless what display manager I use (lightdm? not sure), or display server (xorg, x11 in my case) I have installed.

EDIT: it took me wayyy too long to copy these files. Apparently ls -lh does not show hidden files … I thought my whole laptop went nuts.

it doesn’t sound like you’re an advanced user.

You’re god damn right

dysprosium,

no idea what caused it. The other 2 apps I installed were (if I remember correctly) "Dilithium” and “Latice-based-cryptography-main”. But since I installed Wayland (instead of using Xorg), everything seems to work now…

dysprosium,

I’ll assume you mean Manjaro here – Arch doesn’t hold back packages.

ouch, yes, my bad

I think I kinda solved it by installing Wayland. It seems to work, even on my proprietary nvidia drivers

dysprosium,

so I kinda solved it by switching to Wayland. Not sure it lasts since im on proprietary nvidia drivers
