My friend didn't have a great experience with Linux

I have been daily driving Linux for over two years now and I have switched distros many times. So, when my friend bought a new laptop, I convinced him to install Linux Mint on it. I asked him if he wanted to dual boot, he said no because it would fill up all his storage. We installed Linux Mint. The other day, he wanted to play...

You wouldn't expect to be able to run Windows software on a Mac, why expect to be able to run Windows software on Linux?

Having said that, it's true that you actually can run some windows software through Wine but it's a hack and it's not going to work as well as it would on the OS it was designed for.

But there are also things like Java and Electron applications that run natively on linux and just as well as on windows.
As for Minecraft Java edition, I just downloaded the Minecraft launcher .deb from minecraft.net and installed it, and it runs perfectly. You can't really complain that your pirated stuff isn't work right, lol.

edit to add: An easier way for your friend to try out Linux would be to either run it on a virtual machine within Windows, or boot from a live USB (that's slower though).

Building a brand new machine and leaving Windows for good

I’m sick of Windows, and especially what it’s become, and the way its trending looks like it will only get worse. I’ll be building a brand new PC this summer and want to choose a Linux Distro instead. In preparation, I’d like to try out a virtual machine with a Linux distribution. I am solidly familiar with Ubuntu, but I...

The only thing to be careful with about building a brand new computer is sometimes the linux kernel takes a little while to catch up and support the latest hardware for some things. So maybe if any components you're planning to use are very new, look them up and see if they are supported yet.
As for a distro I always recommend Mint. Your plan to try out a bunch of them on a VM is a great idea.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

That assumes nothing would happen to prevent the "next guy" from being sworn in.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

Only one thing is sure--he won't leave willingly, he's as much as said so, as alluded to in the article.

He'd have to be removed in a forceful manner but after another 4 years of him and his minions in control we can't be sure that our institutions, e.g., courts and military, would be able or willing to do that.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

Now that you have Mint, next time you want to make a thumb drive for installing a distro all you have to do is plug in a thumb drive, right-click the .iso file, and select Make Bootable USB Stick. (or from the Menu choose Accessories ‣ USB Image Writer)

And here's a nice intro to Mint for you. That site has lots of other helpful stuff too. Enjoy!

I guess if our populace has become this damn stupid, then democracy can't work here anymore. Democracy requires a certain minimum level of education and knowledge in the voting population. The number of comments I see online where people think the POTUS is some kind of emperor who just has to decree something and it happens (even in other countries!), and that Congress and SCOTUS have nothing to do with anything, is astounding.

Do they not teach government and civics in schools any more? Not to mention history. The ignorance of history is a huge part of the problem as well, not knowing about anything that happened more than 10-20 years ago, let alone the past century or two.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

Welp. 😐️

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

No, it literally was not. Again, POTUS is not an emperor! Congress has to do it by passing legislation.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

I see. So you live in Europe and your goal is not to learn how the US Constitution stipulates that Congress, not POTUS, determines the number of justices, but to spread misinformation in the US, presumably with the goal of creating political division.

From https://www.supremecourt.gov/about/faq_general.aspx

Who decides how many Justices are on the Court? Have there always been nine?

The Constitution places the power to determine the number of Justices in the hands of Congress. The first Judiciary Act, passed in 1789, set the number of Justices at six, one Chief Justice and five Associates. Over the years Congress has passed various acts to change this number, fluctuating from a low of five to a high of ten. The Judiciary Act of 1869 fixed the number of Justices at nine and no subsequent change to the number of Justices has occurred.

Do you claim to be a United States citizen?

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

I'm glad to hear you took it upon yourself to learn, kudos to you! And that you mention books, not (just) the internet as a source. Your library should have lots of great books on these subjects. I thought history was kind of boring in high school, but later I found out it's really fascinating (was it me/my youth, or the school that made it seem boring? :D).

One thing I definitely remember being drilled into us back then was that we must be constantly vigilant to protect our rights, or we'll lose them. How true that turned out to be! We're on the verge of losing so much right now. :(

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

What "arguments"? This isn't a debate. I'm not trying to convince anyone of a political view like you are. I'm debunking your misinformation with the fact that only the Congress can change the number of Supreme Court justices, through legislation, including links to sources--but anyone can simply read Article 3 Section 1 of the Constitution and the history of how Congress set up the courts to understand that this is the case.

The fact that you keep insisting falsely that Biden could have done it himself shows that you have a political agenda. The fact that you aren't from the US and keep repeating a false, divisive talking point in spite of it being disproven shows that you have a political agenda. We aren't falling for it. Go back to twitter and FB where you'll find more gullible marks to buy your propaganda.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

That's great! I have to alternate non-fiction with fiction to "cleanse my palette", lol.

I'd forgotten how they would put more emphasis on memorizing dates than on why the events were important. Yes, it's definitely the school's fault. :)

I think there's always been that teaching to school kids that "we're the greatest and bestest country!" (gotta get that indoctrination well-embedded). When I was in school during the Cold war it was mostly about all the reasons why we were better than the Soviet Union (many of which either had unmentioned exceptions, or sadly no longer apply, especially post 9/11).

Conservative Plan Calls for Dozens of Executions if Trump Wins (www.thedailybeast.com)

A conservative plan for Donald Trump’s potential transition into the presidency calls for dozens of prisoners to be executed, according to HuffPost. An 887-page plan by Project 2025, led by the ultra-conservative Heritage Foundation, says that if elected, Trump should make a concerted effort to execute the remaining 40...

Last time he had a bunch of "normal" (old style) republicans in his cabinet, and they stopped him from doing a lot of what he wanted to do. And of course the career civil servants in all the government agencies followed the law and that stymied a lot of his and his minions' schemes--which they learned from. Now they know where the roadblocks to dictatorship are and have had 4 years to come up with plans like project 2025 and others.

Next time, no one will even try to stop him. Everyone in the cabinet and appointed post will be loyal lackeys who will do whatever trump says. Career civil servants who don't follow illegal or crazy orders will be fired and replaced with those who will. Even the Supreme Court now has the 3 extreme conservatives he appointed along with many many federal/district court judges who were drawn from a list compiled by the same people who authored the project 2025 plans.

The next time ain't gonna be like last time, folks.

Pathetic Russian troll, trying the ol' concern troll tactic. "Oh, we all know Russia is going to win, why make the Ukrainians, who BTW are just as bad as Putin, suffer even more by delaying the inevitable?" No one on here buys that shit, go back to facebook and X where your propaganda will find more fertile ground.

Slava Ukraini

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

Let's see now, who started that war? Oh right it was Putin. No one else in the entire world (except maybe a few of Putin's cronies) wanted that war, least of all the average person--including average Russian, who is suffering far more than average Americans because of it, since Americans are basically not suffering at all because of it and many pay no attention to it at all.

You're saying that since average people suffer from the wars started by dictators like Putin, that we should all just roll over and let them own the world. "Oh, just let Putin have Ukraine (and then inevitably) the other former SSRs, and if that goes well, maybe a little more here and a little more there, that way you won't suffer so much, which is totally your own fault for resisting." Fuck that shit, troll.

Europe and NATO will not let that happen because it's simply too big a threat to Europe. Putin is ruining a whole generation of Russians' lives and futures along with Ukraine's, just to satisfy his impossible fever dream of building an empire, and it will only destroy Russia in the process. You should be trying to help us stop him now if you want to prevent more suffering for the rest of the world.

The money US sends to Ukraine is a drop in the bucket and has no effect on the life of the average American--there are far bigger factors that affect our economy and our lives than that pittance of the military budget, much of which we'd be spending anyway to replenish our inventory with up-to-date supplies. You know how our MIC works. It's a machine far bigger than average Americans have influence over, so even if people buy your propaganda it means nothing to that machine. Our lives are affected much more by domestic policies. Your propaganda efforts fomenting social unrest have been much more successful in that area golf clap but it won't help Russia survive what Putin is doing to it.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

Putin will sacrifice everyone and everything in Russia to try and achieve his fever dream of taking back Ukraine and the other post-Soviet states before he dies, and it just ain't gonna happen. There is not the slightest possibility of it. The best he can hope for is to keep some portion of the Ukrainian territory that he already had before he started his idiotic enterprise, and he will have ruined Russia for generations in the process.

Also, I would imagine that once Putin's gone, whoever comes after him will cede the territory back to Ukraine because the West will demand that, if Russia wants to be allowed to rejoin the world economy. All that suffering was for nothing but Putin's ego. That's what dictators do, and why we have to stop them, not appease them.
Ending my responses to you now.

She probably thinks telling this story will be sure to clinch trump's VP slot for herself.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

But you see, only trump's opinion matters, and trump hates dogs. If he picks her, magats will fall in line and come up with rationalizations that what she did was good.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

I think you're right that they'd be disturbed. But I think their cognitive dissonance will overcome that and they'll rationalize it in whatever way they need to to see it as acceptable, because in their eyes trump never makes a mistake or does anything wrong.

leadore,

Ubuntu has long suffered from NIH syndrome, constantly inventing its own non-standard components (snaps, Unity, etc) and trying to make them "win" by forcing them on their own users. Reminds me of Microsoft with its non-standard Internet Explorer, its own non-standard version of Java and others.

The lesson is to use a Community distro, not a Corporate distro. When the distro's goals align with its community's, even a distro based on Ubuntu will usually be better than straight Ubuntu. For example Mint keeps the good things about Ubuntu (in Mint's opinion of course), removes the bad things like Snaps, and adds other features that the community wants that Ubuntu won't (like built-in Flatpak support among other things).

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

I gave up Ubuntu when they switched to the Unity desktop. ugh!

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

Mint has an auto-upgrade tool so you don't have to reinstall each time. It used to be only for minor version upgrades but now you can auto-upgrade to a new major version as well. In any case there are plenty of great distros to choose from.

And yes! whatever distro (and other FLOSS software) you use, support them with a donation if you can! When you consider the value you are getting for free vs. what you'd be spending on proprietary software, it's not so hard to do and feels good too.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

Unless this is sarcasm, please get real. I can't believe how many people actually think POTUS is some kind of emperor of the world who just has to decree what they want and the other countries' leaders obey. You think he just has to tell Netanyahu "Stop" and he stops? Surely you're not that naive.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

"a strong progressive president ... like Ronald Reagan."

wtf? Progressive?!!!?! Reagan?!??!?!!? am I living in the Bizarro World now? Does no one know any history any more? It wasn't even that long ago that Reagan and Thatcher ruined the world. Please educate yourself. Reagan busted the unions, deregulated industry, massively slashed taxes on the wealthy, and ushered in the era of escalating income inequality that continues to this day and destroyed the middle class (it was a thing we had for a brief period after WWI up until Reaganomics).

If you think Regan was some great president because of that oversimplified account you copy/pasted about an incident with Israel then you'd better rethink how you come to conclusions about shit. Educate yourself -- and rethink your conclusions about Biden while you're at it. Life is more complicated than your propaganda sources would have you believe.

Here's a couple links about your hero Reagan.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

It's irritating how these articles always choose such misleading clickbait headlines.

  • First, a governor does not "pass laws". The legislature does that. Then the governor can veto, sign, or do neither--in which case it passes by default. Our (KS) governor is a Democrat and has vetoed so many anti-LGBTQ+ and abortion restriction bills I've lost count. Unfortunately, the supermajority republican legislature has managed to override a bunch of her vetoes.
  • The other bill, the "ID required to view porn" bill is making the rounds through most red states. It's not specifically about "acts of homosexuality"--that is one item in the list of what is considered "sexual content" in the bill. She did not sign that bill, but it will pass because she didn't veto it either. It'll be interesting to see (here and in the other states that passed this) what kind of "feedback" these legislators hear from their constituents who can no longer view their porn anonymously--or at all, if the sites stop operating in these states.

What distro should I use on my potato?

I have an HP Stream 11 that I want to use for word processing and some light web browsing - I’m a writer and it’s a lightweight laptop to bring to the library or coffee shop to write on. Right now it’s got Windows and it’s unusable due to lack of hard drive space for updates. Someone had luck with Xubuntu, but it’s...

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

Just like Debian which it is based on, you can get AntiX in either 64 or 32 bit, whichever you need for your processor. It's a very good lightweight distro. I'd recommend it, as well as Crunchbang++ for something like this. (edit to add that Crunchbang++ uses Openbox window manager, very lightweight but easy to use--something to consider for whichever distro you decide on).

Multifunction Laser Printer and Linux

My faithful Brother laser printer just poo’d itself. And since I’ve not purchased a new printer with additional features since I switched to full-time Linux, I thought I’d better ask around to make sure the document scanning, copy, fax (maybe once a year if that), and other features will work correctly....

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

My Brother laser printer + scanner was plug and play on Linux Mint, but I saw that Brother also has their own drivers for Linux that you can download if you want.

leadore,
@leadore@kbin.social avatar

Fortunately Linux Mint will continue to package it as a deb.

leadore,

You could go for the best of both worlds and use Mint LMDE (Debian Edition). But if only using it as a server, plain Debian should be all you need.

I use the Menu key for my compose key, since I never used it for anything and it's conveniently right next to the right Ctrl key.

I can't figure out how to open links to magazines/communities on other instances in kbin in order to subscribe to them. Clicking on it opens the instance in a new tab. Pasting its link into Search for magazines usually comes up empty. I

For example today I saw this post with a link to a lemmy.world community. I click the link and it opens that community's lemmy.world page in a new tab. If I click Subscribe on that page, it asks my for my instance, I enter kbin.social and I get a kbin.social page with 404 Not Found. If I try to search for it on kbin with either the name or the full link, I just get "Empty".

That's just one example, it happens with lots of other ones, too, especially new ones. I've managed to pull foreign ones up sometimes. I assume those are cases where kbin.social already "knows" about a community because someone else on here has interacted with it.

So how do I subscribe to these things?
