unknowing8343,

But then why don’t you simply develop a toolkit that installs all those things and sets things up properly on a standard fedora install?

This seems something with too big of an attack surface.

How do you handle your passwords?

I rely on Bitwarden (slooowly migrating from… a spreadsheet…) and am thinking of keeping a master backup to be SyncThing-synchronized across all my devices, but I’m not sure of how to secure the SyncThing-synchronized files’ local access if any one of my Windows or Android units got stolen and somehow cracked into or...

unknowing8343,

Bitwarden already stores a local copy on all devices you have it installed. Just make sure you load up those devices from time to time… And guess what, you are probaly already doing that with your phone and laptop (which actually contains generally 2 copies, 1 on your actual client and another for the browser extension. Add a third device for good measure and… Oh, you also have a backup on bitwarden.com, this thing literally backups itself everywhere!

unknowing8343,

Honestly, just get a good one. They work well.

unknowing8343,

The problem with signal (which I love and use) is that sadly they could really f_ck up with a simple decision and sell out. That’s the issue with such centralized companies.

unknowing8343,

Yes, that’s why I put it in quotes, because I don’t like using it either but at the moment I couldn’t come up with a way to name normal people that don’t know about the world of open source 😅. So thank you. Will see if I can change the title.

Edit: done!

unknowing8343,

Yes but the problem is that currently banking apps and possibly other “legally important” apps will freak out running under Waydroid.

unknowing8343,

If I am not mistaken, not all apps run on Waydroid, specially banking stuff will freak out because they have systems to know that you are running on true, verified hardware or not.

unknowing8343,

I mean, with this dualOS device it would be solved… And recognition of Linux mobile would increase, hopefully making banking apps look for other systems of “verification”.

unknowing8343,

Some banking services do only work through the app, believe it or not, as it is “the trusted device”.

unknowing8343,

This is not dual booting in the classical way. Imagine your laptop had 2 processors, and you could be running Linux on one, while the other processor is dormant with Windows, and wakes up when you launch League Of Legends or something. But then, you minimize LoL and you are back on Linux.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

unknowing8343,

HeliBoard. Swype library must be downloaded and currently only working ones are closed source but the keyboard itself is open source and amazing.

unknowing8343,

No, a Pi-Hole would not work in this case, as suggestions are not “ads”, technically.

They probably did that by IP. Keep in mind that Google is an ad-company that makes money by profiling and Amazon wants you to buy their stuff. Of course Amazon gets info from Google to make more money out of you.

There might be a way to block Amazon recommendations, tho. Maybe even something officially supported, some kind of toggle in your profile config.

Also, don’t use YouTube directly, use Invidious or Piped, and this particular issue would be gone.

unknowing8343,

Many distros have it compiled and ready for use.

unknowing8343,

Install KWin script “Polonium” and you won’t need any TWM anymore.

unknowing8343,

This is the definitive replacement for gboard, people. It works fantastically well already with everything that Gboard has and it will only get better from here on.

unknowing8343,

I don’t mean to sound like an a-hole, but when will the KDEConnect’s ever-appearing “accept” pop-up when remote-mousing work properly?

unknowing8343,

Keep in mind TheLinuxExperiment is sponsored by Tuxedo, so don’t take his opinion too seriously.

What's the state of the art for KDE Connect Clipboard Sync?

A couple of years ago with my old phone (running if I don’t remember wrong Android Pie) and my old laptop (running Manjaro KDE) I discovered KDEConnect and how it could enable a clipboard sharing feature similar to the one Apple provides between Macs and iPhones. It was great! Now, after having changed both my phone (now...

unknowing8343,

To sync clipboard from phone to computer, I use the quick toggle thing (where you can toggle WiFi, flashlight, etc) on the notification centre.

Planning on moving over from Windows 10 to Linux for my Personal Work Station. Can't decide which OS I should switch to.

Windows has been a thorn in my side for years. But ever since I started moved to Linux on my Laptop and swapping my professional software to a cross platform alternative, I’ve been dreaming on removing it from my SSD....

unknowing8343,

Just read about how they miss very important things time and time again, like they cannot learn from their mistakes. EndeavourOS is what Manjaro should be.

unknowing8343,

Does anyone know if these vaults are portable and syncable through typical services like MEGA, Google Drive, etc?

unknowing8343,

IMO, standard Firefox is pretty OK, so I’d rather use that than some weird derivative that has more chances of security issues, breakage, or development halt.

unknowing8343,

I suggest that next time you simply crosspost from here so we can all comment under the original thread: https://social.opendesktop.org/users/thisweekinkde/statuses/112064318978191706

unknowing8343,

The problem with Flatpak is that for me I would only use it to sandbox propietary apps, and most of these are not officially supported, so there is almost always something broken, like screen sharing, etc.

unknowing8343,

Arch Linux (Endeavour OS if you are scared of the terminal) for personal use. It’s almost all the software you want one click away, plus the best documentation ever.

Debian on my company’s computer because Debian.

unknowing8343,

I just tried HeliBoard. Ditching Florisboard for now. I still think Florisboard has potential but it is undeveloped, and HeliBoard has everything you’d expect for a Gboard open source substitution. Let’s go! Finally we have our first open source keyboard alternative without drawbacks!

I dislike wayland

Quite the unpopular opinion, but I just wanted to post this to show the silent majority that we still exist. We have reached a point where voicing criticism against wayland is treated like the worst thing ever and leads you to being censored and what not. The red hat funded multi year long shill campaign has proven to be quite...

unknowing8343,

Don’t worry, we are sure you Wayland haters will keep up some obscure X distro with a spacebar-heater feature while the rest of the world keeps moving forward.

unknowing8343,

There is a big jump from letting someone do some swipes on your Tinder profile with your permission to forcing an unwanted marriage for third party gains.

unknowing8343,

For a second I thought they were launching their federated lemmy/kbin instance. With different communities, like “support”, “bugs”, “news”…

Would have been freaking awesome and a great use case for Lemmy and federarion.

Good for them anyway.
