Do you think people would be okay with 'Recall' if Apple did it?

With the recent WWDC apple made some bold claims about privacy when it comes to so called Apple Intelligence. This makes me wonder if they did something to what Microsoft did with Recall feature, would people be less concerned and to an extend praise their effort?...

wuphysics87,

I’m not familiar with all of them, but I know several of them are tools. Isn’t it in apple’s best interest to open source the tools if people use and improve them, and subsequently it means they get more money from the app store? And if these are the only things they open source, they still have a tight fist on the vast majority of their code base.

While on the subject of apple and FOSS. They may open source some tools, but do they give back to other projects? I.e. does apple push upstream? Substantially less than google and ms. And I would go so far to say almost never.

wuphysics87,

I’ve enjoyed Proton for several years, except there ia no Linux desktop client. I intend to test installing the client in a virtual machine running windows, and then use shared folders.

Remote desktop for Wayland?

I only just switched to Linux last month that time I don’t know what Wayland or X11 is and I just use Linux like normal without knowing I’m using Wayland (KDE), now since I’m already configured my KDE desktop on Wayland and I don’t wanna do it again, so I’m looking for a remote desktop that work under Wayland not...

What is it you’d like to do? You might be able to do it with ssh

My friend didn't have a great experience with Linux

I have been daily driving Linux for over two years now and I have switched distros many times. So, when my friend bought a new laptop, I convinced him to install Linux Mint on it. I asked him if he wanted to dual boot, he said no because it would fill up all his storage. We installed Linux Mint. The other day, he wanted to play...

Laptops often have open slots for hard drives. With his permission open the back and see if he has one. Bonus points for replacing his win10 hd with a 1tb. He’d probably appreciate it enough to give Linux another go

wuphysics87,

Not all BIOS look the same. Not all computers have the same button to push to enter the BIOS

wuphysics87,

Was going to (quasi) meme post man bash, but this was much better advice

[Resolved] After updating through both APT and the Software Store, I can't play mp4 videos with VLC anymore. The screen goes blank for a second or two then the audio starts playing without the video..

I’m using Debian 12, Ryzen 7 5700X processor, and Radeon HD 5450 graphics card. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling VLC but it didn’t resolve the issue. Here’s an excerpt from the VLC’s log file:...

wuphysics87,

On arch I would reinstall pipewire. Idk if there’s an apt equivalent

Is there a way to download a Windows.iso anonymously?

Hello, whenever I try to download the Windows.iso from Microsoft, it blocks me because I’m using a VPN. I don’t really want to buy proxies or anything for this. I tried to download it off public WiFi but it was way too slow. I only need Windows for updating the EC firmware on one of my older laptops....

Someone else’s computer. Like a library

wuphysics87,

I run fresh rss in a docker container on linode which unfortunately is no longer open souce, but I’m at ease over privacy given it would be relatively difficult to extract my information

wuphysics87,

It’s worth doing anyway to get a sense of how computationally intensive it is. Then consider how many people ask for the daily fart joke and you get a sense of the environmental impact.

wuphysics87,

Isn’t that good for alphas? Who’s complaining?

Secure Operating Systems (Microkernels seems to be the future)

I am not satisfied with Linux’s security and have been researching alternative open source OS for privacy and security So far only thing that’s ready to use is GrapheneOS (Based on Android) but that’s not available on desktop (Though when Android release Desktop mode it may become viable)...

wuphysics87,

That thing needs to summerize it’s own shit.

wuphysics87,

I used to be a fan, unless I was doing something wrong on the website, you can only log in with proprietary software like github. You used to be able to just create a room. I realize that presents its own problems, but email should be an option.

wuphysics87,

I’ve used Revolt before. It’s very similar to Discord superficially, but lacks a lot of features. Even though it’s more similar to slack, I’ve found Mattermost to have more feature parity.

wuphysics87,

It looks like it is supported via pluggins unfortunately

wuphysics87,

Several things

  • write bash and nothing else (except posix sh)
  • find a good way to take notes. It shouldn’t be in your bashrc
  • only write fish for fish config
  • use $!/usr/bin/env bash
wuphysics87,

It’s unfortunate how many replys are missing the good part of this and rather respond with criticism and negativity. We can do better than that folks. This is a good thing!

wuphysics87,

Was this comment meant for another thread? I’m confused

wuphysics87,

Isn’t this an optional feature? Wouldn’t you have to log in to that service?

supermarket club cards

Hey I’m sure you all know how sketchy club cards are for collecting your data. But I do begrudge paying slightly higher prices just for valuing my privacy. I was wondering if there was any way to sign up to these things whilst limiting the data they have access to. Would it be enough to sign up with fake details and never use...

wuphysics87,

I was accused of stealing by a self checkout machine 3 times in 2 weeks. Discount card or not I’m shopping at the more expensive knock off whole foods instead. Fuck kroger. (I was still stealing apples. Because fuck kroger)

wuphysics87,

You might consider putting a license on it

wuphysics87,

First paragraph: Everything works great!

Second paragraph: Well…

wuphysics87,

While I appreciate the post, and, organized as it may be, it runs afoul of every post like it. It is too much choice and too much information. No amount of formatting will change that. If you want people to switch to Linux make the choice for them. They don’t want to choose.

foxy, to linux
@foxy@social.edu.nl avatar

Apparently my love language is installing @linux on the laptops of people I really care about.

wuphysics87,

If you are gonna have to be anyway, it may as well be one you can run bash scripts on over ssh

wuphysics87,

I use hyprland, but I’m not a fan of the community of edgelording weebs

wuphysics87,

Pop!OS. It is maintained by a company called System76 who make Linux computers. You might think about getting one if you want a new computer. Support the cause!
