Funny enough, a friend of mine got into literature recently and he recently read it. He said it was fucking heavy but probably the best thing he’s read so far in his life. I’ve been meaning to get around to reading it myself, but I am also WELL aware that it is not a, uh, ‘great and tragic love story’.
Yeah, this. It’s an amazingly well-written novel… seriously, one of the greats. But I would absolutely never describe it as a love story. That definitely requires some amount of reciprocation and not just grooming and rape.
I’m a huge fan of Nabokov’s and have read Lolita several times… But I’ve never heard it described as horror before and you are so right! I guess before I’d have classified it as tragedy but horror fits so much better.
It’s basically a horror story told from the point of view of the monster.
The only “tragic love story” is maybe Dolores’ mother trying to warn the world about Humbert being a pedophile only to be hit by a car and killed, unable to save her daughter. Or maybe Dolores’ tragic battle to love herself and escape from all the men who want to take advantage of her.

Beautiful! Playing mandolin is a weird experience for me as a guitar player. Like... I know how this all works, it looks familiar, but it's upside down and everything is very close together. It's a lovely sound though.
I’m a guitarist too! The upside down thing is crazy, but I’m not having too much trouble adapting to it. I’m really loving that there are tons of viable barre shapes, working out melody is going to be nuts though lol
This trope, like how the Addams Family does it, has always really bothered and confused me. Like if the characters followed it to it’s logical conclusion, it wouldn’t make any sense at all, and I just can’t get over that. I don’t know how to explain what’s logically wrong with it, I wish someone would like write a tvtropes page about it
Isn’t that the whole thing with shows like The Addams Family? You’re not supposed to think that deeply about them or attempt to apply logic. The illogic lends to the humor.
I think the absurdity is part of the joke, but you sound like me in that you enjoy your fiction in an incredibly literal way. I remember being into cartoons as a kid and needing grounded explanations for everything even though the characters’ lives essentially reset every 30 minutes.
