MentalEdge, to linux in authenticated remote filesystem access for home/SOHO use?

I don’t think you can get more “linuxy” than samba. You can go down to something simpler, like FTP, or SHHFS which is basically also FTP, but there’s no SMB equivalent that’s “more linux”.

It’s all just different implementations of different protocols that exist, and SMB is used the most for a reason.

Does this only need to work on LAN? I’ve not used Kerberos.

I’ve never had SMB break. It’s definitely been my LAN network storage protocol of choice over the years, decent performance and perfect reliability so far.

And while I do have SSHFS set up, and use it sometimes, it’s by far the slowest solution in my experience. I basically only use it to pull a file via phone if I need something off my desktop or home server that I didn’t put in a location accessible via/synced to nextcloud, and I’m not at home to grab it via my desktop (which mounts my server’s fulesystem via SMB).

Some time ago I finally set up off-site backup at my dad’s, and while nextcloud has been my solution for convenient file storage, sharing and access from anywhere, it’s extreme overkill for such a use-case.

It’s better suited for syncing folders (using up space on both client and server), not mounting as a network storage location (though I think it can do that?)

What I ended up doing was setting up unencrypted FTP through the VPN that I use to access my home network. Server at dad’s connects to it on startup, from there my server is able to see the off-site machine on my LAN and it can then dump backups into it.

For AC compatibility specifically, there is also areweanticheatyet.com

There are some games with BattleEye that work, same as EAC, the Devs have to enable it.

One game like this is The Cycle: Frontier.

Helldivers 2 which comes with nProtect apparently also works, at least for some people.

areweanticheatyet.com is a great resource similar to ProtonDB, but for AC compatibility on Linux.

Looks at my votecount. Are you sure?

The flesh color, size and orientation bring to mind a suction cup dildo that a person might sit onto.

But for me what elevates it beyond “haha, penis” and makes it funny is the context of Thing being placed next to Wednesday as if an accessory that comes with the Lego kit. Thereby suggesting a dildo is to Wednesday, what wands are to Harry Potter minifigs.

After the initial trouble with the Zero Dawn port (which they actually put in the work to fix), the ports have been stellar.

The extensive accessibility settings and configurable graphics have been even more accommodating than some PC-only titles.

And sony has been releasing drivers for the PS controllers so that ported PS5 games could still access and use the unique features on the DS5 controller, even when not running on an PS5. And not just on windows, but on Linux too. Sony has been going out of their way to not just bring the games over, but to explicitly support unique features they could have locked down and made exclusive to PS consoles.

Getting to play with the half/full adaptive trigger pull for main/secondary fire in Rift Apart on PC, was really cool.

It almost feels too good to be true in comparison to companies like Apple and Nintendo.

That’s not a “touché” moment.

That’s a “Adding the cereal to the milk? I raised you better than that” moment.

MentalEdge, to linux in What Linux "Productivity" (ideally FOSS) tools do you use?
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yes. Or out of focus. If you have one monitor, three virtual desktops would be like having three monitors. Looking at a different one, doesn’t stop anything running on another. You can also “send” a window on one desktop to another, equivalent to dragging a window from one monitor to another when using two or more.

KDE Activities is a similar feature, but it can actually suspend everything running in a certain “activity” when you switch to another, if that’s something you want.

They’re not talking about a virtual machine. There is no “booting up”.

You can have multiple desktops in linux, I personally use three, which you can switch between using a keyboard shortcut (or widget/ taskbar item).

It’s kinda like turning one computer into multiple computers that you hop between on demand.

I have one for gaming and entertainment, one for work, and a third for personal projects.

The word knockoff inherently comes with the meaning of something being made with less effort, with lower quality results.

A well made imitation of the good stuff, means we get to enjoy more of the stuff. Calling something a knockoff is only warranted when the copy is bad, and not worth indulging.

And we can’t know until it’s available to play.

I remember the discourse before Automata actually came out, and how people saw 2B and thought the game couldn’t possibly have merit beyond being horny.

But look at its cult status, today.

What makes it a Nier knockoff?

That it’s a hack n slash with a sexy girl? Wouldn’t Nier be a Bayonetta knockoff, then?

Or if you ignore the sexy girl, a DMC knockoff?
