MrZee,

I suspect that there is “palm check” turned on for your touchpad. This is designed to keep you from accidentally moving/clicking the touchpad by brushing it with your palm while you are typing.

Look for a “palm check”, “palm rejection”, or “disable touchpad when typing” setting in your touchpad utility. As far as I know, these are all roughly the same thing.

MrZee,

Also why the fuck would they charge for it?

Because they have long since moved away from selling worthwhile products to selling anything they can trick people into buying. Providing value is no longer a concern, only short-term profit.

MrZee,

If you look for a “watt meter plug”, you’ll pribably understand what it is at a glance. It’s a device you plug into your wall outlet (or surge protector or whatever). It has a power outlet on it, which you plug your device into, and a screen that shows watts drawn and watt-hours over time. Super simple. I think “Kill A Watt” is the most well known brand.

Who, in your opinion, is the most annoying character in any game?

Personally, it’s Faith from Farcry 5 for me. Uninteresting dialog that can be summed up to “I was bullied once” and that’s it. Literally every other character is so much more interesting. Jacob gives you a sequence where you run through a gulag which he then uses against you, John tries to kill you and is openly hateful...

MrZee,

My friends and I called all annoying companion/escort characters “Buttfuck”. Natalia was the buttfuckiest Buttfuck.

What a random person on the internet thought of Grant, Lee, Sherman: Civil War Generals 2 (lemmy.world)

I have spent about a total of ten hours playing Grant, Lee, Sherman: Civil War Generals 2 (which for my own sanity will be referred to as “CW2” from here on out), which is not nearly enough time to become an expert, but I have managed to scratch a little bit into the surface. Originally I had planned on playing Robert E....

MrZee,

Great post, thanks! Looking at the pictures makes me feel like I must have played a different sierra war game using the same engine back in the day. It all looks very familiar, but I’m pretty sure I never played this.

I think there is a typo for you to fix; it sounds like the following should say to not just grab the best weapon:

Be careful, especially as a Confederate player to grab whatever the best, most high value weapon is within reach as the more expensive weapons tend to have higher rates of fire, which translates into more expense to keep the unit supplied with ammunition. Running out of supplies will turn the finest repeating rifle into a glorified club and make the unit easy pickings.

Ambrosia probably provided me the most hours of gaming entertainment over the 90s. They published Mac software and, if I remember correctly, most of their games were shareware and the non-paid versions were pretty well featured.

I wonder how many hundreds of hours I played Escape Velocity and Escape Velocity Override. Those were some absolutely amazing games and they supported plugins (mods) and had a thriving mod community.

For the 90s mac users, you’ll probably recognize a lot of their games (listed on the Wikipedia page). Here are some from the 90s that stand out to me:

Maelstrom

Chiral

Apeiron

Swoop

Barrack

Escape Velocity

Avara

Bubble Trouble

Harry the Handsome Executive

Mars Rising

EV Override

Ares

Escape Velocity Nova

Trying to pass audio from one pc to another causing constant static

I am trying to pass audio from a laptop to a desktop via a headphone jack from the laptop to a line in on the desktop but it provides constant static. I have tried two different aux cords (new). I currently think I might need an USB to Audio Jack Sound Card Adapter but don’t want to buy this too and have to return both if it...

MrZee,

Headphone out isn’t identical to line out, but is generally close enough to be used for the purpose. This should be working with a minor degradation in sound quality.

First thing is first: have you plugged headphones into your laptop to make sure the headphone out jack is working? Assuming you have done that…

I suspect you are dealing with the laptop jack being a “headset” jack and not specifically a “headphone” jack. Headphone jacks are “TRS” headset jacks are “TRRS”. See the picture at the top of this.

On the PC side, the line in jack is probably just TRS… if it’s a line in. Is it line in or microphone in? A mic in jack could just be a TS jack.

Are you using a TRS to TRS cable to hook this up? Or a TRRS to TRRS? Or a TRRS to TRS? I’m guessing you tried the first - TRS to TRS. If that’s the case, I would give a TRRS to TRS cable a try. TRRS out of laptop, TRS into desktop.

Edit: actually, assuming you are using a TRS to TRS cable, I’d get this adapter: a.co/d/aSMseh4Adapter plugs into the laptop headset jack, then your TRS cable goes from the headphone jack on the adapter to the Pc. Mic jack stays empty.

I think this is more likely to work than a random TRRS to TRS cable, as those cables can come in a variety internal wirings, so a random cable may not be dropping the mic wire (like you want) and instead be dropping one or both headphone wires.

MrZee,

In case you didn’t see my edit… see my edit. I think this adapter would be better than a trrs to trs.

If I remember right, the mic wire is getting bridged with the ground by the TRS jack on the computer.

MrZee,

I think there’s a good chance it will work… but to be clear I’m not positive this will solve it. Fingers crossed! And please let me know if it works. I’m happy to help you keep troubleshooting if it doesn’t.

MrZee,

Possible, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

If you want to do more testing while you wait for parts…

See if you can find a substitute device to act as the “laptop” in your setup (something that is putting audio out over a 3.5mm headset jack) and plug into the Pc to see if the issue is still occurring.

Then see if you can find a substitute “desktop” (something with line in) to see if things work. Depending on results you may be able to better isolate where the problem is… I suspect it’s the cabling and the solution will work, but this test may show there is an issue specific to one of your devices.

MrZee,

Dang. Also, that’s a weird result. There are different standards for trrs jacks, but I can’t think of any way that could result in losing one of the L/R channels when going through that adapter.

  1. are you sure you are plugged in to a “line in” and not a “mic in” on your PC? If it’s a mic in, I think it’s just a mono TS jack, which would explain all the noise and weirdness. A mic in will not work for your purpose.
  2. On your laptop, do you know if you are able to set the type of device you have plugged in to the headphone jack? It may be possible to set the jack for “headphones”, headset”, or “microphone”. Having the wrong setting there could be a problem.

superuser.com/…/trying-to-switch-my-headphone-jac…

  1. if you are able, on the laptop, mute your mic.
  2. I don’t thing the ground loop isolator will fix it, but I’ve run into plenty of “that shouldn’t work… but it did” situations. No harm in trying.
MrZee,

Just in case: what about my question (1)? You are plugged in to a line in and not a mic in, right?

I’m pretty sure ground loop can’t occur on a laptop when it isn’t plugged in to the wall for power. From a quick search, this seems to confirm that:

Power Supply

A low quality power supply unit can lead to ground loop noise, particularly on laptops. Disconnect your computer from your power supply so that it runs on battery power and verify if this resolves the issue. If you are going to use a replacement power supply unit, make sure that its specifications meet the ones required by your computer in order to avoid permanent damage.

I’m seeing that, beyond ground loop, noise like this is probably some other form of EMI (electromagnetic interference), often from bad capacitors. I don’t really have experience there.

I’m sure enough that the ground loop isolator won’t work that it will probably work. So try it!

If that doesn’t work, I think a USB audio interface is the next solution. Since you were still getting hum (albeit less) when plugged in to the the monitor, a new interface from the laptop should work.

MrZee,

Optical drives were a major bottleneck in every gaming system that used them. They were convenient because they offered a lot of data storage for cheap, but the trade off was that games performed worse than they could. The fact that consoles have moved off of optical storage and onto fast internal storage is a boon to people that care about performance. That may be a sad situation for you, but a lot of people find it to be a good thing.

MrZee,

Old farts unite! I’m right there with you, although I think my first wing commander game was 4. I think I did something similar with Myst to escape constant “hunting” on the disc drive. The noise of the cd drive revving up and down 2ft from my head is seared into my brain.

MrZee,

4K output alone doesn’t provide much (if any) benefit. The article (and I assume the company as well) says nothing more. For this to mean anything, they need to talk about the console doing something to internally render at a higher resolution or talk about what upscaling techniques it will use to go from whatever internal resolution the N64 runs at (480?) to 4K.

Putting 4K in the title seems clickbaity, considering there is “no there there”.

Edit: not accusing OP of clickbait, just the article.

MrZee,

I may have used the wrong term. When I talk about internal resolution vs upscalers, I’m trying to differentiate between what resolution the games are initially rendered at by the “console” vs post processing what comes out of the console and upscaling there. From what I understand, many PS1 emulators are able to actually render polygons in game at higher resolutions so that you get crisp 3d graphics. I think N64 emulators can do the same (but I’ve never really dug in to those).

Thinking more, since this is not an emulator, it seems unlikely that it could increase the render resolution (but we can hope). That just leaves upscalers to increase output resolution. This is what the Super NT does - which makes sense for sprite-based games/systems anyway.

MrZee,

I usually have the same problem as you when I play rpgs (or rpg-like games), but BG3 has been different for me. Part of that is that I went into it wanting to just let the game play out. The other part is that the game does an excellent job of making results ambiguous (in a very good way, imo).

You can choose to save/kill/sneak through something and “complete” it, but it often is not obvious whether you made the optimal choice. Most approaches seem valid and you may not find out the real consequences until later in the game. Embrace it. Accept your consequences. And keep going. It really is an amazing experience.

MrZee,

Ever heard of Sealioning? Look it up. That’s you. Your posts are dripping with pseudo-intellectual “just asking questions” spittle.

  • MrZee,

Oh, now I see. It was never about the pronouns, it’s just about streamlining the user experience. How could I have been so stupid, thinking that the only intent behind this mod was bigoty, when in reality it was innocent streamlining.

Dude, the dog whistle isn’t subtle. Could you stop?

    MrZee,

If you wanted to discuss that, your first step would be to look for Nexusmods moderation policy and read it. Or if they don’t have one published to note that fact.

Then start a post discussing that moderation policy and asking how moderation should be done.

Instead you started your post by focusing on the removal of a particular bigoted mod, which of course makes it a needlessly charged discussion if you’re looking for purely rational discussion about how moderation decisions are made. Then you keep making these absurd arguments — like claiming this mod may have just been about streamlining. This looks like trolling. And it talks like trolling. You claim I’m missing the point. I don’t think I am. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck… it’s probably a maga troll that’s “just asking questions”.

    MrZee,

Claim whatever motivations you want, but reading through this series of comments does a great job of showing everyone your real motivation. You are not here for rational discussion of moderation policy. Your trying to argue that bigoted materials should be allowed.

I can’t stop looking at this train wreck. But ima try.

  • MrZee,

    Three thoughts:

    1. I wonder if you would still have this take if you played a newer, high quality AAA game on a high end setup. I don’t mean to imply that your mind will definitely be blown — really don’t know — but it would be interesting to see what doing so would do to your opinion.
    2. Gaming is about entertainment. There is no denying that better/bigger/smoother/more immersive tends to add to the entertainment. So devs push those boundaries both for marketing reasons and because they want to push the limits. I have a hard time seeing a world in which gaming development as a whole says “hey, we could keep pushing the limits, but it would be more environmentally friendly and cheaper for our customers if we all just stopped advancing game performance.”
    3. There are SO MANY smaller studios and indie devs making amazing games that can run smoothly on 5/10/15 year old hardware. And there is a huge number of older games that are still a blast to play.

Old curmudgeons unite! I totally knew what you meant.

Edit: that said, I would add NVMe SSD as the way to go… although I think that is pretty much all you find these days. Are non-nvme m.2 drives a thing?

    Steam Deck VS rivals

I was interested in buying a Steam Deck… Until I discovered all the (apparently) better alternatives. Asus Rog Ally, OneXPlayer, Aya Neo etc… I like the idea of an handheld console and obviously I would like to have a device that can run almost everything, so the Windows based handhelds seem better than the Steam Deck. Is it...

    MrZee,

I haven’t used other handhelds, but what you say is what I’ve seen from other discussions and reviews. Yes, there are more powerful systems with better screens, but the SD’s OS is miles ahead (but not without a lot of quirks as well). The touchpads are incredible - I couldn’t imagine trying to use a handheld PC without those touchpads. Also, the custom control configuration abilities built in to steam OS are incredibly versatile and detailed.
