Secret300,

I really hope matrix gets native VoIP. I saw like 2 years ago it was in beta, haven’t kept up with it though. I’d also really like voice channels like discord so my friends and I can replace discord but it seems like matrix isn’t interested in being a discord replacement

Secret300,

was? so it’s not anymore?

Secret300,

so would you be able to run ipfs under i2p to have a secure and private ipfs?

Secret300,

Oh damn, I didn’t even know lemmy didn’t have federation at first

Secret300,

I’m addicted to Minecraft and OSU. Every once in a while I’ll play some risk of rain 2

Secret300,

I’ve been looking for a Linux tablet for a while and I think I finally found it. Well written review and I hope it gets better support once released globally.

Secret300,

Need to get some OT soon haha

Secret300,

I constantly use it for running Linux commands that have complicated options and arguments or that I just don’t remember.

Secret300,

I feel this. They already released the new OLED model. If/when they make a 2nd deck I’d want it so be a noticable upgrade

Secret300,

I’m very excited for more developments from matrix

Secret300,

Personally I don’t trust it. Don’t really have any reason not to but it just feels eh to me. Just use matrix

Secret300,

Just use matrix. Revolt is just giving your data to someone else for no reason. Like you could technically self host it but it’s not federated like matrix

Secret300,

What that?

Secret300,

Damn I was close. I knew it was something to do with filesystems. Thanks

Secret300,

I haven’t used it in a few years either but I always see blog post and updates from the team. It seems like they’ve made a lot of progress

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

Secret300,

It will be soon. Voice and video calls are in beta

Secret300,

I’ve been so excited anytime I see updates from gnome-mobile. It’s looks much cleaner than phosh

Secret300,

I remember a few years ago people got destiny 2 to work on Linux and Bungie banned those players. Fuck Bungie

Secret300,

Are there any good electron apps? Like genuinely

Secret300,

Really? Even on windows I feel like it’s slow and you can tell it’s an electron app.

Secret300,

I hear great things about obsidian but I haven’t used it since it’s not open source

Secret300,

This makes me think, how many other places would be a beautiful view if we didn’t start building there

Secret300,

Knew this would be the first response lol

A German state is ditching Windows and Microsoft Office for Linux and LibreOffice on the 30,000 PCs it uses for local government functions (www.theregister.com)

Schleswig-Holstein, Germany’s most northern state, is starting its switch from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice, and is planning to move from Windows to Linux on the 30,000 PCs it uses for local government functions....

Secret300,

Yeah, I don’t really care it’s not like I look at it anyways

Secret300,

🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

Jk, I have no idea but I hope it’s just piracy. Fuck the industry

your favorite homelab applications

Hi, just recently it’s foss had an article about homelabs. Of course I digged in, since there is a small nuc working tirelessly in the corner of my routers closet. So far it just crawls some web pages for me and sends emails accordingly to my filters. So I hoped to find new exciting stuff to let it crunch through. The articles...

Secret300,

Saying it’s “state of the art” isn’t an excuse for poor optimization. Developers have been able to pump out 60fps on way worse hardware and still make it look good. We have more powerful hardware now but worse software. In the past 8 years alone new optimization techniques have been found but no one uses them

Secret300,
Secret300,

I completely understand it. Publishers want pretty graphics at all cost and give 0 time for developers to optimize it

Secret300,

No clearly not but we’re talked about the latest console from Microsoft. Not saying it’s insanely powerful but it sure as shit ain’t weak or outdated hardware

60 Percent Of Playtime In 2023 Went To 6-Year-Old Or Older Games, New Data Shows (kotaku.com)

A newly released game industry report by market researcher Newzoo shows that while the PC and console market grew 2.6 percent in 2023, overall playtime decreased as gamers spent more and more time in a smaller list of old games like https://kotaku.com/fornite-og-map-season-chapter-4-update-1850990645* *and League of Legends.

Secret300,

Not surprising. We went 6+ years without any good games. It’s looking up though. I haven’t bought helldivers yet but it looks really good. I just need to upgrade my PC

Secret300,

In my opinion there should be more apps. I hate that they are just webpages tho

Secret300,

Native apps can give better performance and take up less resources. But to be honest I just miss the good ol days. I mean back then the web browser was the main thing you’d open on your PC but now it’s pretty much the only thing

Secret300,

I would recommend distrobix instead of a full VM. Boxbuddy is a nice gui app for distrobox

Secret300,

I’m down, but I will do absolutely nothing

Secret300,

I didn’t even know lemmy had DM’s

Will antivirus be more significant on Linux desktop after this xz-util backdoor?

I understand that no Operating System is 100% safe. Although this backdoor is likely only affects certain Linux desktop users, particularly those running unstable Debian or testing builds of Fedora (like versions 40 or 41), **Could this be a sign that antivirus software should be more widely used on Linux desktops? ** ( I know...

Secret300,

In this xz scenario an antivirus wouldn’t do shit. it’s better to find and fix vulnerabilities rather than bog your system down with malware

Secret300,

I googled redis and went to the site but I’m still not exactly sure what it is
