jsomae,

I’d prefer to see downloads per country per capita.

jsomae,

Yeah, they could have applied a logarithm or something.

jsomae,

It was previously announced that no announcement on switch 2 would be made until 2025

jsomae,

The concerning thing is, wouldn’t this affect yt dlp too?

jsomae,

Xbox controller is the worst thing to happen to emulation

jsomae,

Oh they’re very good controllers! The problem is that they took Nintendo’s button names (ABXY) and transposed their positions. It’s utter chaos, and very hard for me at least to remember that A is B and B is A.

Playstation, by contrast, came up with entirely new button symbols, so it’s much less confusing that O -> A.

The APIs for gamepad interfacing are a total mess now, with some based on button names and some on position (south/east/west/north).

jsomae,

See the other comment.

jsomae,

Yes, I know I can remap, but I’m just too stupid to be able to remember that the confirm/cancel buttons are swapped so I’m constantly messing that up. It’s especially a problem on the steam deck, which has Microsoft’s layout.

Somehow, when I’m holding an xbox controller, my brain just knows that the A button has to be the south button.

jsomae,

:O I had I idea!!

jsomae,

Yes of course, I agree this is the rationale for sure. Still I blame Microsoft (and Sega as I’ve just discovered) for this.

jsomae,

I don’t respect the way IP is abused by large companies. I support short-term IP as I think it does help individuals in a net-positive way for everyone.

I could be convinced that short-term IP is bad too, but regardless I think long-term is the the big problem. Games from the 80s should all be public domain by now.

jsomae,

I respect that.

jsomae,

I don’t exactly understand Google’s response. “[Many of the tickets in this database are merely flags and not actual incidents. The issue in question is over six years old. It was deemed non-intentional.]” Equivocating?

jsomae,

Perhaps they meant to put the asterisk in Twitter’s name like so: *

jsomae,

Looks like they’re in A/B testing right now. You can have maximal impact by avoiding using twitter on those devices for the next few weeks.

jsomae,

Unfortunately, shaking off users who are digitally conscious enough to use Firefox (and recommend alternatives) probably improves Twitter’s odds.

jsomae,

All of these represent various social mores. I’d have no problem with my kids seeing content involving fantasy violence, but I respect that others might object. As a bisexual myself, I have less respect for those who object to their kids seeing homosexuality specifically, but I can tolerate their existence.

For fairness’ sake, I wouldn’t mind it if heterosexuality were on the list too.

jsomae,

Yes that was clear to me. I was saying that, while I don’t find same-sex content objectionable (indeed it makes me happy to see this kind of representation on screen), and I personally think it’s something children should be exposed to, many people would disagree. Just like other tags on here which I think children shouldn’t be exposed to at a young age but others wouldn’t mind. Relative morality.

Politically speaking, I would be happier if those who oppose same-sex relationships were to change their minds. They pose a threat to my life. But FOSS is for everyone, even people I disagree with.

jsomae,

I’d be thrilled to get another Morrowind expansion.

jsomae,

Yes! Tamriel rebuilt is really cool.

jsomae,

If anyone has other recommendations that don’t precisely match OP’s needs, I’ll also be in the market soon.

jsomae,

In fairness, I have no idea what I would want from that search query.

jsomae,

There is no evidence that it comes from Portuguese. It most likely comes from Korean. Wind-on-the-panes is bullshitting (convincingly!)

jsomae,

You’re right.

jsomae,

From what I’ve researched online, the consensus among linguists is that it is not Portuguese in origin. I haven’t found anyone opining this other than this tumblr user in fact. Anything is possible, but this seems completely ungrounded.

jsomae,

I had it on my bingo card for 20 years and just took it off :(

jsomae,

Article mentions the death of flash was a nail in Neopets’ coffin, but they don’t mention the open source Ruffle project which resuscitated Neopets’ flash content.

jsomae,

No, it’s unreasonable to expect the servers to stay online forever. Instead, they should be required to hand the keys over to the community if they stop providing the online service.

jsomae,

I never play games that are pure online with no LAN support.

jsomae,

so that no further intervention whatsoever is necessary for the game to function

I mean, I’d accept “release the source code” but this doesn’t.

jsomae,

I wouldn’t require source code, no. I would just consider that one acceptable form of allowing the game to continue being playable. However, it requires intervention from the user, so it wouldn’t be accepted under this proposal.

Under the proposed rule, a company would not avoid penalty by releasing the source code.

jsomae,

Good point.

jsomae,

Moreso, I like to be able to have control of the game. If I play a game with my friends that I like, I don’t want the game to be changed into something else (live service) so I can’t come back and play the version we once did.

jsomae,

I don’t really think that’s poisoning much. It’s not hard to crop out the pencil after.

jsomae,

TIL that there exist people who aren’t bothered by obnoxious watermarks superimposed on an image. I find them aggravating, and I’m not the only one – That’s shutterstock’s entire business model.

AI is already making people’s lives worse. Let’s not make human art harder to enjoy in a fruitless effort to resist it. Instead, let’s solve the root of the problem.

jsomae,

If it’s in the middle of intricate detail it will make it harder to appreciate that detail as a human.

Anyway, it’s easy to make an AI to remove such things. Just take a million images, add watermarks, and train the AI to produce the original images.

Got tracked down for my school reunion

Today I was contacted by someone at work. She graduated school with me and our 20 year reunion was coming up. Why did she contact me at work? It was the only way they were able to track me down. I was included in promotional material by name. She told me I "was the hardest to track down"and I had to smile....

jsomae,

Scary to think what will happen when AI can automate that.

jsomae,

Sucks they were able to find you this way. That’s why I always use a pseudonym.

jsomae,

:O

jsomae,

This is not news. The headline is misleading. They took down an ad-bloated fork of an emulator which is still on the app store. Nobody should find this remarkable in any way except for the fact that Apple actually made the right call for once.

jsomae,

Ok, you have my upvote now :p

jsomae,

I don’t think he’s saying to tip for a Blizzard game. He’s not at Blizzard anymore (probably still has stock though).

I basically agree, I mean, I’d tip for a game I really like. Actually I do, indirectly. I buy other things from companies like FromSoft. I would go further than you and admit I agree with him despite the irony.

jsomae, (edited )

The dorf fort devs made like $3k-6k per month throughout the 2010s. They did end up going commercial to get more. But it was hardly “not even a little profitable.” I mean, I’d take that deal to do what I love too.

jsomae,

That game was good mostly because of the modders who made Wintermaul, DOTA, Sheep Tag, etc… The base game had dated graphics even on release.

jsomae,

Is anyone seriously advocating for literally even distribution of the rewards? Some people barely touch the game and others are in it from the start. Not to mention putting work in early is much more risky than working on a nearly complete game.
