sploosh,

The kernel is too old for newer AMD gpu drivers to work, but switching to a newer kernel isn’t too hard. I had to when I built a new computer last winter, but I have also used various *nixes for a good long time.

Knowing how to discover you need a newer kernel is a bit tough for recent convert, though.

sploosh,

Exactly. As far as Linux has come in terms of ease of desktop use and hardware compatibility, there is still a barrier in knowing how to know which flavor is right for you and, almost more importantly, why that flavor is right.

sploosh,

Male gorillas and lions both top out around 500lbs. Do you think you could kill a cat the same size as you if that cat wanted you dead? With your bare hands?

sploosh,

Paralyzing is super broken in Skyrim. It doesn’t actually matter how long the target is paralyzed, because paralyzing them at all causes them to fall, starting a lengthy stand-up animation, during which they’re vulnerable. Hit them, they fall. They start to get back up, so you hit them more. Eventually, they stay down.

sploosh,

And you can emulate the Switch on the Deck.

sploosh,

The best dog I ever had was a pit. Sweet as pie, just wanted to cuddle and love. We chose him because he was a big meaty guy with the most adorable face you’d ever seen, and because he needed a home ASAP. We’d take him on walks and people would cat call him from passing cars, or literally stop us and ask if they could dog-sit. He spent nearly a decade with us, just loving and farting and cuddling and snoring.

He really didn’t need any help to become a great dog, except that I needed to train him that the cat was a friend and not something to chase and put our mouth on. That took all of a weekend, and that was after he’d been abandoned and abused for half a year before we got him. I know it’s not true for every individual, but many times all a dog really needs a a good home with people that love it.

sploosh,

Unrelated? Tim Russ is the desert-combing trooper who didn’t find shit!

sploosh,

Yeah, so they aren’t unrelated.

sploosh,

Is it mangosteen? I’m guessing it’s mangosteen.

sploosh,

Yes, it’s the doctors that are playing at politics. Those nefarious OBGYNs who are trying to get babies and mothers through childbirth safe and healthy. The bastards.

sploosh,

Everyone knows the Bulls logo is an upside-down alien giving it to a crab.

sploosh,

Robots can be from other planets.

sploosh,

Hard disagree. Modern dash displays give tons of useful information that would be very hard to display legibly with dials. The flexibility they offer is good too, often having more than one dash layout. Nav screens are also extremely useful. Going anywhere and never getting lost? Get outta here.

And rear camera? Don’t get me started on how a little dirt destroys your rear view until you pull over to clean it or how they represent a more difficult scenario for your eyes, increasing the amount of time you don’t have your eyes on the road every time you check it. Unless you mean a back up camera and not a replacement for a rear view mirror, in which case yes those are super awesome.

sploosh,

With a mirror, you do not have to refocus your eyes to a close distance and then refocus back to a farther one. The time it takes to do this is palpable and adds to the time you’re not as aware of your surroundings as you could be. At 70mph, it’s a lot of distance you’re flying blind.

sploosh,

Because it is south of Australian California, like Oregon is north of American California.

sploosh,

Spanish, too. Translating things that you lay out, like flyers or handouts, from English to Spanish is a massive pain because you need to rearrange for all the additional text.

sploosh,

It was in the article. If you have a question like that, it’s a good idea to read the article.

sploosh,

Might I suggest Ublock Origin? Never browse without it.

sploosh,

for people who aren’t paying taxes to fund it.

Yeah, no fucking shit man. Homeless people don’t have the money to pay for things. Everyone has the right to exist and it’s entirely reasonable to collect taxes and use them to pay for things that are a net benefit to everyone, like sanitation services for homeless people. Unless you want to help dismantle the entire system that allows money to get funneled into the hands of a few people who then hoard it like dragons, leaving everyone else to make do collectively on the ever-shrinking fraction of the GDP that’s left, how about you grow some empathy and punch up instead of down?

sploosh,

Someone is going to lob a law bomb at Loblaw?

Biden uses feisty State of the Union to contrast with Trump, sell voters on a second term (apnews.com)

That was one of the more interesting SOTU addresses I’ve seen. Personally, I think he said most of the things that needed to be said, and he said them reasonably well. I’m sure he’s going to get some flack for attacking Trump directly (though not by name), but I was frankly glad to see it. Doing otherwise makes it seem...

sploosh,

FYI in the West we don’t call people “dog” as a negative - that’s pretty much an Eastern Europe/Russia thing. We will call people “dog,” but that’s more like “dawg,” as in “what’s up dawg?” which is a friendly greeting.

Also dogs don’t kneel.

sploosh,

It’s almost like how in 2016 out of nowhere “cuck” was a thing that you’d hear people call each other. It’s a much more common insult in Russia/states that were liberated from Moscow’s rule.

sploosh,

Honestly folks should just never pre-order. In the era of digital goods there’s no selling out the whole stock so there’s no rush to get in front of.

sploosh,

I live outside a larger city and in my town there’s maybe one cop I’ve seen who I thought had a chance at beating me in a footrace.

sploosh,

My friend I’m talking about officers that are 6’ 270lbs and it ain’t muscle. These cops are obese.

sploosh,

My 7800xt pulls about 230 watts at full bore, giving me my monitor’s refresh rate in FPS, 144. Limiting the framerate to 72 results in no tearing and drops the GPU watts to 170. Worth it.

sploosh,

Longevity. I build a computer once every 6-10 years and don’t do much upgrading in between. Buying a beefier GPU means it’ll play new games well for a good long while.

And it’s not like I’m doing this all the time. I was curious about the power usage, so I made a script to monitor it and starting tinkering with settings to see what the delta would be. I’m a 100% ultra, max resolution 95% of the time.

sploosh, (edited )

KWh is a measure of total energy, not instantaneous power. Your watt meter was saying that since last reset of the value it measured 40 KWh of energy use. That’s not an insignificant amount - a Chevy Bolt can go around 180 miles on 40KWh. Watts, or kilowatts, are instantaneous power. That same Bolt can easily pull 100KW while accelerating and if it could somehow do that for an hour, it would have used 100KWh. It could never make it the whole hour as it has a 65KWh battery, so it would run out after 39 minutes.

sploosh,

Autocorrect seems to disagree, but autocorrect doesn’t know shit about power vs energy. Fixed it.

6700XT vs 7800XT (First Build)

Hello, very simple question. I am doing my first build and about to order my parts, but I was wondering if the 7800XT is worth the leap and possible long-term gains over the 6700XT? I wanted to know personal experience from normal people, rather than a bunch of tech youtubers. Also if you use Linux, that would be quite helpful.

sploosh,

Mainly at 1080, where the 7800 is weirdly weak. In the long term the 7800 will be the better choice

sploosh,

6.3+ kernel runs the 7800XT just fine.

sploosh,

I find pouch briefs (modal usually) to be good if you’ve got the package and booty to fill them out. Calvin Klien used to make a pouch bikini brief that was basically perfect, but that was many years ago and their modern ones are much smaller in the front.

sploosh,

Having Orpheus’s voice compose the music for the game makes sense from a narrative standpoint. Another point for Hades!

sploosh,

I just read that in the voice.

sploosh,

Don’t worry about the article being light on details, they’ll restart the project a few times between now and release.

sploosh,

I played Outer Wilds immediately after I played Disco Elysium. Both would be incredible to experience fresh again.

sploosh,

They did. Telltale Incorporated folded in 2018. In 2019 LCG Entertainment bought the Telltale name, licensed their content and said, “We are Telltale Games now. We are going to do what Telltale was doing because that’s what we are: Telltale Games. But not that other Telltale that owes that money to people, that’s a different company.”

sploosh,

Well now I guess I need to learn how to make an actual build instead of just running Songbirds and Zimmermanns.

sploosh,

Has there ever been a good game that took over a decade to develop?

sploosh,

The Switch is, in literal actual factuality, an underclocked Nvidia Shield and if you have an older one you can hack it, then restore the clocks to their spec. ToTK runs really well when the CPU, GPU and RAM run at the Shield’s stock speeds.
