Everything said in that article makes me very happy to have switched to Firefox.

Google can dress this up all they want, but a happy byproduct of this (for them) is that they can now purposefully ignore rules/filtering for their own sites, such as youtube, since it puts the real control of such filtering with the browser (and the company who created it) instead of the extension. Yes there is a trust concern with extensions. And yes, there is a performance hit with extensions vetting each network call. But that’s the price we, as the user, should continue to have the power to choose to pay, but Google is forcing us to go their way.

Thanks Mozilla, for providing user choice.

Congress is the authority over federal judges with respect to impeachment and trial. Since Congress is spineless, nothing will be done.

what's your current linux distro?

wanting to hop into the world of linux on a dual boot method (one of my favorite games unfortunately cannot be run on linux at all, and it’s a gacha. I don’t want to gamble with my account being banned, so I’m keeping windows for it specifically.) this’ll be my second go at it, I used Pop!_OS briefly but had some issues...

Garuda Dragonized

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Hmm, yeah my PC is about 2-3 years old now and it booted just fine. If normal Arch can boot (EFI ideally), then Garuda should be good.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

You are right. They can’t for every distro.

But fedora/rhel, Ubuntu/debian, and arch-based distros are the most commonly used. So they can provide official packages for those, and/or as the OP said, provide an official flatpak.

And to be fair, it’s a nice-to-have to have a better sense of trust, but given the unofficial ones are open source, it’s quite likely any maliciousness would be rooted out very quickly.

GloriousEggroll among a few others, and Valve of course, are the main reasons Linux gaming is now effectively solved (aside from anti-cheats where there’s nothing to do if some developers don’t want to support Linux).

I haven’t yet watched the video, but I agree I’ve not needed to use Steam beta at all. While it’s around 70% of tracked games being labeled Gold or higher on protondb, I have found that with proton-ge, 100% of the games I’ve tried have worked without issue (on the order of 30ish games thus far).

I won’t be going back to Windows, ever. So it kinda stinks that some devs just won’t support Linux for anti-cheat (like Lost Ark, etc). But it’s a price I’m willing to pay to not be spied on.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Ventoy is great as others have said, and probably would do what you want since it has its own installer and is its own bootloader, and can boot isos loaded on the USB drive.

If you want something that works, in my experience, as well as Rufus, maybe take a look at Balena Etcher, too.

Holly Hunter and now Paul Giamatti. They must have some major money for this project. I can’t wait!!

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

From what I’ve read and listened to, they’re misleading in this report when they say all crowdfunding backer devices have been fulfilled/delivered.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I feel that pain, but probably not to the same degree. I’ve backed over 300 campaigns on Kickstarter and Gamefound. I’ve had around 8 that didn’t fulfill and didn’t give a refund – somewhere in the vicinity of $500-800 worth overall. It’s maddening when it feels like our money was either stolen or at best, wasted.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I’m sorry you’re having to deal with that – especially for a technology we’d all like to see in that space to provide good competition to the main two. Thanks for your efforts to push that forward!

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I agree. The problem is there are too many people who make excuses for switching which wouldn’t exist if they just actually switched. Saying the alternatives suck compared to Adobe products…well if everyone stopped using Adobe products today and all switched to the various other software out there that does run on Linux, I guarantee you within a year, they would be all on par with the Adobe products because they would finally have the financial backing necessary to accomplish that goal.

Adobe still exists simply because they are a behemoth due to existing for 40 years. People have choice, even professionals, even businesses.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I’ve distro-hopped across at least 20-30 varying distros between 1999, when I began my Linux journey, and now.

From Big Box Redhat 5 to Debian to Mandrake to Ubuntu to Fedora to Mandriva (what Mandrake and Conectiva became) to Arch to Cent to insert-flavor-here and a mix of many of those over the years.

I’ve settled on Garuda Arch for the time being, and may eventually give Nobara a try once GE has v40 out and has made more progress on umu.

The one distro I’ve never tried: Gentoo. I suppose I’m okay with binaries built by someone else.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

It would also be nice if there weren’t ads littered throughout the article.

I have used Linux since 1999 and advocate its use for various purposes which includes being a daily driver, but I would never subject anyone to that article.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I was on my phone.

And that’s completely missing the point. This isn’t a useful article solely because the whole purpose of the article is ad space, not Linux. It shouldn’t be on me to have some ad blocker just to be able to easily read it. It’s a garbage article from what I’m guessing is a garbage site.

ulkesh,

We all should just use Arch.

This is the way.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I mean, I did get the joke.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

So if one wanted to run Arch but were of a similar opinion to you, then they could run Manjaro, which is also a semi-rolling release distro. It’s just on the monthly cadence.

Everyone has their opinions on distros. Doesn’t mean any one opinion is wrong.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Way to out-pedantize a pedant. Also, wikipedia isn’t exactly a credible source. While I wouldn’t personally split hairs on the use of “app”, TimeSquirrel isn’t wrong in that the use of that short-form wasn’t ubiquitous until the time of smart-phones, and more specifically, the iPhone.

Also, since we’re quoting sources, take a look at www.britannica.com/technology/mobile-app which specifically states “app” meaning “mobile device software”.

Are we going to see arch based immutable distros in the near future?

Hi there folks, I’m still learning about Linux and have yet to dip my toes properly in any arch based distro. Have for the moment fallen in love with the immutable distros based on Universal Blue project. However I do want to learn about what arch has to offer to and plan on installing default arch when I have time. But have...

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Honestly, I’d rather it didn’t, or at least maintain the standard Arch as it is today. I get the appeal of immutable distros/installs, but they are just not for me. They feel like a lot more work, for not much benefit.

Also, given that Fedora atomic distros are the ones people seem to compare against, I don’t like that flatpak is effectively required. I like flatpak and what it offers, I don’t like that all apps I install must be flatpak, or that I have to go around that default in some way (when I tried one of the atomic spins, I kept running into apps that just didn’t distribute as flatpak and it made things more difficult). I suppose this old dog doesn’t want to deal with some new trick just to use his system like he always has with a simple pacman -S or apt install.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I’m not trying to be a Luddite here, I love technology when it solves a real problem. I guess I just don’t have a problem that an immutable distro would solve.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Or I could run pacman -S code on a system that doesn’t require hoops to jump through.

I think I just don’t see the reason or benefit of going the immutable distro route. At least not yet, for me. I’ll never say never, of course. Right now it feels like extra steps to achieve the same thing.

The Media Still Doesn’t Grasp the Danger of Trump (theintercept.com)

Just like Hitler before him, Trump is benefiting from the fact that journalism is an incremental, daily business. Every day, reporters have to find something new to write or broadcast. Trump keeps saying dangerous and crazy things, but that’s not new. He’s said it all before. His impeachments and the January 6 insurrection...

Newish user migrating to Linux

I have been using Arch Linux with i3wm for around 5 years for work, on my ThinkPad. I am fairly comfortable with pacman and setting up a distro. I have previously tried Mint, Manjaro, KDE Neon, Elementary, and MX Linux, all for the same use case (Work: where I need a browser, Slack, and a MongoDB GUI)....

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

For someone coming from Arch, that could be a tough sell. When I tried it, I was greeted with numerous instances where I couldn’t find the software I needed or expected and didn’t understand or know how to acquire because it wasn’t in the add/remove software at all (no flatpak available).

I get why people think atomic/immutable OSes are the future — it’s just not for me presently.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

If only every software I need had a flatpak option for installation. That is the problem right now with going this route for me. I dumped Bazzite solely because of this reason (and because it kept wanting me to reboot after installing simple user-space software, and I now know there’s an non-intuitive way to avoid this). I’m not yet sold on the atomic distros.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Blaming the current economic issues on Biden is wholly ignoring the shit-show that preceded him. He’s not perfect, but he didn’t directly cause this bullshit — he’s just not done much to combat it except for college debt, the Inflation Reduction Act, and a few more actions like stimulus. As an aside, I personally have lost $25000+ now solely due to Trump’s tax changes.

It’s also wholly ignoring the unfettered greed that the US seems to have a fetish for. One prime example: soda is literally 4 times as expensive now than it was just 5 years ago. It still costs pennies to make a 12-pack of soda, but $10 for that 12-pack is now the norm. The supply chain woes of the pandemic no longer apply, yet they decided to just keep the prices at that level.

It’s time to blame the real reason the 99% are fucked — corporate greed, and a spineless, useless Congress unwilling to do anything about it.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

(boosting domestic manufacturing and supporting unions through an actually-pro-labor NLRB) which have been boosting wages

That’s good, I didn’t know that. However, that hasn’t had any affect on me, personally, as you have suggested, being a tech worker. In fact, I had to take a wage cut just for the business to survive. This whole economy is screwed in one way or another. And anytime the economy is screwed like this, it usually benefits some (typically the rich), and destroys others.

This is all considerably too complex to boil down to any one real thing to point to, but the notion of corporate greed still nags at me every single time I go to the grocery store. If prices can rise, they surely can also fall – and they simply haven’t, all while record profits are continually posted, and not for just luxury items – but for basic needs as well (groceries, etc).

This is as large a cost-of-living swing as I’ve ever seen in my many decades on this Earth. And it worries me greatly for my kid’s future.

I was okay with them getting Blizzard because, well, how much worse could Blizzard actually get with the merger?

But this? I sincerely hope this never happens. Valve isn’t the complete shit-show that Blizzard has been. Valve actually understands its customers and seemingly, mostly, respects them. Please for all things good in this universe, keep it that way.

We like to laugh and play here about Linux quite a bit

We do? Aside from the “I use Arch, btw” memes, I must not have got that memo :) And, uhh…I use Arch, btw.

Fuck, ignoring the obvious pron implications that I assume everyone here is immediately thinking of, think of HIPAA, think of the private communications with therapists that people have, think of all of the financial documents you’ve opened, think about bank accounts, chats, fucking everything.

So much this. I’m glad I dumped Windows and this just guarantees that I’ll never return.

Did I just solve the packaging problem? (please feel free to tell me why I'm wrong)

You know what I just realised? These “universal formats” were created to make it easier for developers to package software for Linux, and there just so happens to be this thing called the Open Build Service by OpenSUSE, which allows you to package for Debian and Ubuntu (deb), Fedora and RHEL (rpm) and SUSE and OpenSUSE (also...

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

The way I see it, the issue here is that everyone is trying to solve packaging from the developer perspective. I understand why they do, but the only way to solve this is to instead look at it from the user’s perspective.

Apps should be dead simple to find, dead simple to install, dead simple to maintain and use, and dead simple to remove.

This is why snap and flatpak and appimage are things. The problem here is that they each have various issues within them that break one or more of those tenets from the user’s perspective.

Trying to resolve packaging by going back to same methods that have existed for decades and wrapping them in a bow may help developers in some fashion, but the end users are still going to lament dealing with apps on Linux because it’s not solved — for them.

The answer to that is…yes.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I like the concept of atomic distros, but the implementation leaves a lot to be desired for me. Having to reboot after installing any software seems counterproductive to me (admittedly this was my very limited experience when I tried Bazzite).

You and me both. I’d rather it just be Pop!OS. Or just, Pop. Or the better term: Soda.

ulkesh,

I love the fact that System76 is an American company pushing Linux forward (well to certain degrees, anyway). I know they use hardware produced in other countries (for chassis at minimum, not sure about the rest of the components), but it’s still nice to see.

Next time I’m in the market for a laptop, I’ll certainly give them a solid look (hopefully the form factors of the more powerful systems will be less…girthy…by then).

Pop!_OS is quite solid. I’ve used it from time to time. However, I’m partial to Arch because I like to be closer to the bleeding edge (currently using Garuda for my gaming rig).
