311 is so phenomenal

darkphotonstudio, in Joe Walsh- Space Age Whiz Kids

I haven’t heard this song literally since the 80s. Listening to it now, the lyrics give me intense Boomer vibes.

TheBaldness,

Me neither. It didn’t age the way my mind imagined it before I heard it again.

demesisx, in 'NPR is cool!' How Tiny Desk Concerts became a pop culture phenomenon
@demesisx@infosec.pub avatar

I discovered a few bands from their Tiny Desk concert. The best of all was Khruangbin.

As another comment alluded to, it’s all but certain that TINY DESK has now jumped the shark.

It did take a while.

Vodulas,

Do you mean Tiny Desk or Khruangbin has jumped the shark? If it is Tiny Desk, not sure how showing live music could jump the shark

demesisx,
@demesisx@infosec.pub avatar

TINY DESK! 🤦🏻‍♂️

It’s easy to imagine how they will jump the shark in the future. Look at enshittification.

How about them being so selective with who they pick that they don’t choose any good music in the future but instead choose Taylor Swift and other acts that are so mainstream that it’s like watching the Grammy’s? That’s easy to imagine. It’ll happen and we won’t be able to find new, obscure, amazing acts like Khruangbin through their show because that’s exactly how this type of thing happens.

Vodulas,

Tiny desk has had very big names on before and managed to not jump the shark. Lizzo, Moby, The Cranberries, and a lot more. The fortunate thing is that the chance for enshittification is pretty low since it is publically funded. It is possible when Bob Boilen moves on it could take a turn, but the people below him seem to be pretty passionate about the same mission.

I get it. They had Adele near the beginning.

Still, IMO things that successful have a tendency to veer toward enthittification on a long enough timeline.

AVeryCleverName,

They had Taylor swift play in 2019

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!!!

relevants,
  1. From the way you use the word, it’s clear you don’t know what enshittification means
  2. You sound like the kind of person who dislikes anything that’s too popular. Chill

Wolfram, in What song still emotionally "destroys" you today? And why?

Porter Robinson - Goodbye to a World It’s a fun song since it’s electronic and dance. There’s not even many lyrics, but at the same time it manages to be a very emotional song. It genuinely makes you feel like you’re at the end of a world.

astraeus, in When, in your opinion, does a modern rock song expire into a classic rock song?
@astraeus@programming.dev avatar

I’m almost afraid to answer this question.

The rock from the 60s and 70s got ubiquitously considered classic rock by the early 90s, but I wouldn’t classify anything beyond the early 80s as “classic”. I think that the genre may expand with time, but the 60s and 70s were the true origins of rock. The music past that is definitely not new, but not “classic”.

I guess that makes my answer G.

Edit: From a marketing perspective, I’m about to cringe hard, music up to the mid-90s is considered classic rock. To me that seems like it’s just an easy way to keep “classic rock” more entertaining and nostalgic for the older markets, and more relevant for the younger ones.

Devi,

I hear bands like Linkin Park referred to as classic rock quite a bit and that’s early 2000’s. I cringe every time someone says it.

averyminya,

The thing is is that they’re not quite wrong.

It’s not quite right, but it will only become more true.

Aaron Barrett of the Reel Big Fish had a side project for a while called The Forces of Evil that’s got some fun stuff in a ska vein.

Professor Plum was a small ska band I really enjoyed when they were doing things (oh golly thirtyish years ago).

+1 for Skatalites, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, RxBandits, Less than Jake

The Arrogant Sons of Bitches is one of my favorites, and not just because they spent time mic’ing a playskool xylophone for their sets. They’re not as, um, clean as the Reel Big Fish but there’s a ton of fun to be had with their songs.

The Toasters. They’re 3rd wave ska, after The Specials, who were 2nd wave. Try the early albums. Look for the song “Mister Trouble”.

torknorggren,

Your "very old " is second wave. Further back is legit Jamaican Ska like the Skatalites and Desmond Dekker and early Wailers.
