Is there a community specific to FOSS or just general privacy oriented IoT? With plenty of hardware discussion along with software. Routers, piholes, Meshtastic, anything IoT but open source. If it touches a network but you want it to do something it doesn’t. Flashing a doorbell camera with FOSS firmware. Hosting media servers...
Or an android tv supported by a privacy respecting custom rom.
This year we made good progress. You know, Linux gaming becoming better, Reddit fucking up, Metaverse failing etc. But on the other hand Big Tech has or are planning to make some moves. Such as, Google’s Web Enviroment Integrity API (EDIT: they backed off), UK’s encryption bill, etc....
So I’ve got Android as I want. LineageOS, no Google, Magisk, MicroG but with AndroidAuto with OsmAnd+....
Looking for a note-taking app, preferably that I could use straight from a browser. I’m currently using Standard Notes. Not sure if that one is any good, but E2EE and open-source which at least checks those boxes. I don’t store anything too sensitive and I don’t need a whole bunch of features, though I suppose I’d use...
And what do you actually use? I know the answer is probably self-hosting but maybe there are other solutions for a decent privacy.
I heard a lot of bad stuff about Brave and their CEO lately and am now unsure if the search engine is any good? Do they censor stuff? Is any data collected? Can it be considered private?...
It’s discrediting valid concerns against card-payments. It’s invalidating how great cash is....
Hi guys...
We are starting to see for quite some time big tech trying to get the internet under their control. We have seen half of the internet starting to block proxies. Tor is not usable in the normal internet anymore. More and more services require a government issued id for their account....
I’ve been using SwiftKey for over a decade now, and I didn’t really realize how potentially horrible it is for privacy. What are some good alternatives you guys can suggest, ideally open source?...
I mean, exactly how invasive are default operating systems? (Like Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Android, iOS) Do they log your keystrokes, log passwords, capture screen, upload your photos, videos, or audio? (Assuming you aren’t a target of government) Is it even possible for the average person who doesn’t feel comfortable...
Is the Google Services Framework ID (GSF ID) visible and accessible to all apps downloaded on mobile device running on Android 10 or higher? Or is the GSF ID only visible and accessible to privileged apps on the device?
It saddens me to admit, but google maps is by far the best maps app, ig all that stalking does come in handy. OSM just doesn’t have nearly as much data or information about certain places...
If you want to join the group, please send me a PM with the reason you want to and your favourite animal.
I’ve seen on TrackerControl this system app (on my grapheneOS) contacting Amazon (amazon.com) and Google (android.clients.google.com, m.youtube.com, play.google.com and www.youtube.com)....
Both are interesting choice, which one do you choose?
I have a question about Firefox containers. If I delete a container, will all of the cookies in that container be deleted? Or will they be merged with the cookies in the regulas tabs that are not connected with any container?
I use Tor every once in a while for basic web browsing just to add some regular traffic to the network and not just dark web traffic. I mainly use it for Reddit as they lock to block me because of my VPN IP but don’t block Tor IP and occasionally other stuff. I know Tor is made so that everyone looks the same but, I am not...

I wish to mention learnings from the coupious time i spend on learning online privacy ,security and anonymity for my b school (MBA) admissions interview. Can I market is as a cybersecurity internship. But Cyber security has a different meaning altogether. I’m pretty much at the advance stage of the privacy journey( read all...
Hi, I have noticed for three days now not being able to post comments from my Lemmy.world account while connected via Tor (I was left waiting for a spinning wheel )! I thought at first It might be a problem with LW servers but after three days, I concluded they are banning Tor and VPN users from posting, I Have found a user post...
I’ve heard of things like iPostal and Traveling Mailbox. Do these services allow you to register with bank, DMV, IRS, Voting, etc? How do they work? Would a normal P.O box using its physical address from USPS work? I’ve tried researching it and haven’t gotten clear answers....
