yo_accountant, in What's a game you think has aged surprisingly well?

Tetris. That game has aged extremely well. I played it on the original Gameboy. I last played it on a VR headset.

AtomicPurple, in What's a game you think has aged surprisingly well?

Symphony of the Night. I played it for the first time a few years ago, and it holds up really well next to modern metroidvanias, better than Super Metroid IMO.

@raktheundead@fosstodon.org avatar

@davetansley: Definitely a game I've used as a comparison point when it comes to the games with the most ports. There was a book written on all of the ports; there was even an arcade port in the planning at one point which can be played in MAME.

davetansley,
@davetansley@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, I played all the ones I could find a few months ago... there was even an Acorn Archimedes port!

raktheundead,
@raktheundead@fosstodon.org avatar

@davetansley: I've played that one at the Centre for Computing History in Cambridge. Despite not having the accelerated graphics of the Amiga, the ARM CPU in the Archimedes seemed to be powerful enough on its own to deliver a surprisingly smooth performance across a number of games.

@davetansley

Yep the graphics and music seemed very faithful to the Amiga version on the Acorn, great title. Loved playing it my A3010.

Digismasher, in Nostalgia: an unachievable high?

It was a harsh reality for me too especially when media from my childhood became readily available. But it just wasn’t the same. I remember watching certain cartoons and it is a fleeting moment of that nostalgia wave, and then it’s over. That realization that I can’t feel, at least not completely, how I did back then.

I do revisit older games that I enjoyed and even collect some that I never got to try. While still enjoyable, I resign myself to the fact I can’t capture that same feeling.

Gull,

You're right about so much old stuff, but some of it really surprises me. I think "I probably just liked this because I was inexperienced, and I probably want to re-experience it because of nostalgia" but then I realize, no, this is a real classic that is still amazing.

Gull, in DUNE Soundtrack (by Stéphane Picq) on AdLib + MT-32 + AdLib Gold

For this game specifically, the MT-32 really doesn't sound as good (and there are few other games with specific support for Adlib Gold).

Gull, in Nostalgia: an unachievable high?

If I could live in a world where the TV played nothing but He-man and Thundercats and Mysterious Cities of Gold, I would...

As you know, that world wasn't in the past, either. ("the 80s of my actual youth") ... You aren't remembering your whole life in that era. You aren't even remembering all your feelings about that TV show. You are only imagining a feeling you might had about that show at some specific time, perhaps a specific occasion. That feeling wasn't nostalgia, so nostalgia will not replicate it. You can seek out nostalgia, but you can't go back to the past. You wouldn't actually want to.

Other people have these feelings who didn't even live in those times, and can't remember them. This isn't about the actual past. It's about aesthetics that you can find in your all-time favorites.

I felt like I was leading the vanguard of something genuinely new.

Now you can find that same feeling with other things that are new, and this is an aesthetic value. But you will actually live through the entirety of them, including when they are bad or boring. They won't be your all-time favorites until you have picked over them and had enough experiences that some of them are peak experiences. Then, only in retrospect, will it appear that there was ever a world populated entirely by your favorites.

Everyone has their favorite things and their hobbies. If you loved concrete gnomes you could collect them, and this could be a source of satisfaction and relaxation to you. To draw a silly example, suppose you love concrete gnomes. If you want to start a concrete gnome blog, or a business where you repaint concrete gnomes, you can do that and spend more of your life dwelling on concrete gnomes, though in reality you will spend plenty of time focused on blogging or painting. At the end of the day, concrete gnomes (and everything else) have limited use, even to someone who loves them. They can't possibly keep you permanently high or blissed out. As long as you understand that it's an aesthetic, there's nothing wrong with spending time on things you love, or looking for other things like them.

Gorejelly, in Just bought an RG35XX, which would be best for me, garlicos or batocera?
@Gorejelly@kbin.social avatar

Sorry I cannot help you too much, but I'll offer what knowledge I have.

I do not own an RG35xx and I've never used Batocera. Checking multiple locations (why is it so hard to find this info?), it seems as though Batocera should have some form of sleep function on 5.30 and later, but I cannot find any mention of this in any change logs (nothing about it in the 5.30 change log) and I looked through a lot!

Garlic OS does have a sleep mode built in to the CFW. I cannot say for sure how effective it is.

Please note that Linux retro handhelds (at least, every one that I've ever owned and every CFW I've ever tried) do not have a true sleep function like Android. Every Linux sleep mode I've tried has been a hack of sorts that is just trying to turn off as many things as possible (screen, sound, wifi, bluetooth, control triggers, etc.) in an effort to try and save as much battery as possible. These "sleep modes" will be instant on and off, because they are never really off. On my Miyoo Mini Plus, I can easily lose massive amounts of battery while in "sleep mode" depending on the game. I believe our batteries are close in size, so you might have the same issue.

If you really, really need an instant on and off and a true sleep mode, you should prioritize Android OS for your handheld. (Don't forget, some Anbernics can dual boot Android and Linux!)

Xperr7,
@Xperr7@kbin.social avatar

Thanks, I've heard the "sleep" mode in Garlic OS saves state, then powers the device off, then loads the state back up, which obviously will take more time than a sleep mode, but as long as it only takes a few seconds, I can live with it. Obviously it's not a true sleep, but it works well enough for me. Can't find anything regarding this for Batocera, so I suppose I'll go with Garlic OS. Maybe one day that GPU will be enabled there and I can play DS on it lol.

rubikcuber, in Just bought an RG35XX, which would be best for me, garlicos or batocera?
@rubikcuber@feddit.uk avatar

I have a 35XX and use Garlic OS. I’ve not tried anything else, including the stock firmware.

GarlicOS is great and I reckon it does exactly what you want. Tap the power button and it saves the state (assuming the core supports it - most/all consoles do, but arcade cores don’t). You need to hold the power button to turn it back on. It will go right back to where you were. There is also a “Recent” games menu that shows screenshots of recently played games at the point when you last close them. Pressing A will jump right back in, while pressing START will start the selected game up from a cold start.

Xperr7,
@Xperr7@kbin.social avatar

So far it seems GarlicOS is what I want, outside of DS support. Have the dev(s) mentioned anything regarding unlocking the GPU like Batocera?

rubikcuber,
@rubikcuber@feddit.uk avatar

A sorry - I totally blanked on your mention of DS. GarlicOS has overclocking if that’s any use. Other than a handful of PS1 games, everything I’ve tried seems to run at full speed, and I don’t think I’ve had any crashes or poor emulation. You might need to fiddle with Retroarch settings to get the best possible scaling. GBA needs non-integer scale unless you want a tiny image, but the interpolation is pretty good. I notice the odd frame pause now and again, which I attribute to the difference between the refresh rate of the core/console vs the screen. Battery life is good to - mine is a more recent version which I think has a bigger battery than the early ones. All in all I’m enjoying it so much I’m considering cancelling my Analogue Pocket preorder.

Edit: also, i’ve not tried HDMI out. I’ve heard that it’s quite limited since (I think) it’s 480p only.

thingsiplay, in Has anyone played Jade Cocoon? I started it because I wanted to try it out as a child and curious to know what people thought of it.
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@Saturdaycat I only played in my youth, but never finished. Has a very nice music and it has a multiplayer mode you can fight against your friend. At that time, thanks to Pokemon, such games were still not very common for a RPG. I loved the music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5P3HMPe3Jw

Saturdaycat,
@Saturdaycat@kbin.social avatar

Thank you for the info! Yeah I'll check out the music too! It is a short game ?

thingsiplay,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@Saturdaycat To be honest, its 25 years ago I played it and never finished anyway. But I think it was not too long. According to user reports on https://howlongtobeat.com/game/4788 at least average of 14 hours for the main story is to be expected.

Saturdaycat,

Thanks Soo much I appreciate it !

JoeKrogan, in Has anyone played Jade Cocoon? I started it because I wanted to try it out as a child and curious to know what people thought of it.
@JoeKrogan@lemmy.world avatar

Played it a bit a few years ago on retropi. I only had a demo back in the day.

It is kind of like an early Pokémon but you can mix the creatures to create stronger ones. Thats my memory of it at least.

Saturdaycat,
@Saturdaycat@kbin.social avatar

Gotcha! So it's not like uh, SMT in terms of fusing demons or something? It's more basic like pokemon? I didn't realize studio ghibli did the videos in it !

BitingChaos, in Just bought an RG35XX, which would be best for me, garlicos or batocera?
@BitingChaos@lemmy.world avatar

Batocera is not in active development for the RG35XX.

Koriki is. It’s very early in development, right now. It does play a lot of things, bit you’ll probably want GarlicOS as your daily driver.

Computerchairgeneral, in Has anyone played Jade Cocoon? I started it because I wanted to try it out as a child and curious to know what people thought of it.

I played a bit of it as a kid, although I don't remember making it very far. I remember fusing monsters was fun, although I'm sure most of the strategy and mechanics went over my head. Honestly, the thing I mostly remember about it is the art style. Didn't realize anyone from Ghibli was involved in the game, but that does explain the distinctive art style.

Saturdaycat,
@Saturdaycat@kbin.social avatar

Yes I was kinda shocked that it was, when I started it up! I am going to possibly keep playing it ... I'm not great at turned based games so I'm hoping this might teach me the basis

probably, in Just bought an RG35XX, which would be best for me, garlicos or batocera?

Right to the point: don’t use batocera because the one guy doing it stopped and said use his other thing koriki. Unfortunately for all cfw for the rg35xx none of the developers have released the code they are legally obligated to release, but what can you do…

I have the rg35xx and use garlic. The fake sleep mode works well. Instant off and then it takes maybe 10ish seconds to turn back on. It definitely is fast enough that I don’t mind turning it off even when I know I’ll be turning back on in only a few minutes.

I haven’t had a game crash on me but the automatic save states have not loaded a couple times so make sure to make your own.

I haven’t used koriki because garlic does most everything I want. If anyone releases their source I might test that because I want to do some link cable emulation stuff, but none of that exists currently.

Xperr7,
@Xperr7@kbin.social avatar

Thanks. I've set up an SD card with Garlic for when it arrives, and I'll keep an eye out for news on Koriki. Link Cable emulation is certainly interesting to me, at least in the future, since a device like this would be a neat gift for my nephews once they're old enough to start playing games like Pokemon.
