Venice bans large tourist groups and loudspeakers

New rules banning loudspeakers and limiting tour group sizes to 25 people have come into force in Venice.

The measures have been introduced to limit the impact of over-tourism on the Italian city, officials say.

The canals of Venice’s historic quarter make the city one of the most visited places in Europe.

Venice introduced a €5 (£4) daily entry fee earlier this year, after initially banning cruise ships from docking in the quarter in 2021.

Over-tourism is widely regarded as one of the most urgent issues for Venice, which has a population of around 250,000 people and saw more than 13 million visitors in 2019.

I would think the fact that it’s going to be covered by ocean in the near future would be the most urgent issue for Venice, but…

It’s up there… somewhere in the top ten at least, just gotta hammer out a few other pressing issues, like finding that guy who keeps sticking his gum under the benches.

NoIWontPickAName,

Look, the Italians really need to worry about this Tower Tilter right now, they’re busy

bobs_monkey,

And they’ll get right in finding the gum-sticker right after lunch, next week sometime.

I would honestly love to live that less than urgent lifestyle. The Greeks have it down as well.

The weight of all those tourists isn’t helping /s

BlackSam,

There’s a project which is currently being completed for that scenario, the Mose: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOSE

conquer4,

It only kinda works, and has big problems: youtu.be/ubzTs8ybYZM?si=RHANOH5yitJz5S4E

Phegan,

You can still make quality of life improvements for the residents while also handling climate change. It’s a myth that a local government can only one thing at a time.

Just have the Hussars bring buckets with them next time they come…

peg,

The tourists turning up in cruise ships are big contributors to climate change. Why not kill two birds with one stone?
