I drink this one a lot more than I post about it, but on a beautiful 87°F April day in I sat outside for lunch and had a Layered Up Wintertime Stout, because a day like today deserves a smooth, roasty stout. It's always MFing stout season. @beersofmastodon

Review time!
A very lemony, full bodied Radler++ Wit, a timid yet true to style dry, phenolic saison, a sweet full bodied, candied fruit and roasty Scotch ale and a very black, coffee, chokotoff-y leather-like stout with a sharp alcoholic finish. 🍻

Anthem - St Austell - 3.8% ABV. B+ and a bit, maybe just on the turn. Malty, fruity, hoppy and bitter. Long gently bitter finish

3.3/5. The rain was forecast to have stopped but it shows no sign. In The Lamb 🇺🇦 moving onto Plan B++ @beersofmastodon

Cwtch - Tiny Rebel - 4.6% ABV. B+ and a bit, going over I think but still a quality brew. Malty, fruity and hoppy with a gentle bitter finish .

3.3/5. In the all new Carpenter’s where I can now get on the WiFi. Feeling very Saturday morning and wishing the rain would stop. @beersofmastodon

Jemima’s Pitchfolk - Glamorgan Brewery - 4.5%. B+ and a bit, this may be just passing its best but is still a tidy Pint. Taffy too

3.3/5. It’s great when you can discuss Potato varieties with bar staff and you find out they are against lard. Solid. @beersofmastodon

Pure UBU - Purity Brewing - 4.5% ABV. B+ and a bit, malty, with a hint of sweet fruity and lingering bitter. Long tasty bitter finish

3.3/5. Cold easterly wind with steady light rain. Not very springlike. Good for my Potatoes but not really for me. Need warmer weather. @beersofmastodon

Online scifi space game Starbase resumes development after an extended pause!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFmEXGaBSmk

For those unfamiliar, Starbase is an ambitious in-development online multiplayer game that has a mixture of first-person on-foot, and vehicular gameplay, with the ability to build ships and stations.

Awhile back its development was paused as the studio had to focus their resources on a different game, but now they're back to working on Starbase.

At Argilla Brewing Company with @GenDV138

Having their Short Session IPA. Crushable session that's only 4.7% and has a slight bite on the end.

Sterkens - St Paul Blond

Unconventional! Very red apple, with some citrus and light bread. Sweet, with a bitter only in the end. Low in carbonation for the style, but a steady, lacing, white head.

Braupakt: Two giants at it together, Weihenstephan and St Bernardus.

The Weizen yeast is obvious, with clove and banana dominating the aroma. Also some biscuit, citrus and hay. It's golden and crystal clear, with a stable white head. Effervescent, rather sweet, with a good dose of hop bitters.

Very well balanced. A good mix of the styles, with both very recognizable. Nice experiment!

@Mutedog @beersofmastodon it is, at least in the Netherlands. But I think it's a one off collab, so it won't be for too long, I'm afraid.

Had this aluminum plate laser cut a few months back and hand-wired it with Box Navies and a RPi Pico, and oiled oak for the sides. I missed my numpad, though, so I used my own laser cutter and made an external one from Masonite and textured spraypaint.

RustyNova,

Left side numpad? That’s unusual

@RustyNova

I’m not sure where it will live long term, but “southpaw” numpads are definitely a thing. They allow for mousing while doing data entry, and they mitigate one of the reasons some people do without numpads by allowing the shoulders to stay more neutral when the mouse is close to the right edge of the keyboard.

What kinds of games might you recommend with deep worldbuilding and interaction that aren't RPGs?

I like worldbuilding and stories, and I like when they're mixed with the interactivity of games, so RPGs seem like they should be a natural fit. Problem is, I dislike the stat-heavy, grindy progression of many RPGs.

I enjoy point & click adventures and visual novels but they're often more limited in their interactions. What kinds of game might I be missing combining the two?

Perhaps audiobook is a better description? Ever since the Final Cut came out almost every line in the game is voice acted.

supersquirrel,

I am gonna give a recommendation out of left field a bit, and answer The Last Federation a game from the developers of Tidalis, oh and AI War.

arcengames.com/the-last-federation/

store.steampowered.com/…/The_Last_Federation/?cur…

You play the last surviving member of a species that used to rule the galaxy with terrifying advanced technology and weapons. Eventually your species fell and became wiped out by the other species that were being subjugated. Now there is a power vacuum and these other minor powers are battling to becoming the new empire. Your job as a lone alien with an extremely powerful ship (in a small battle, not powerful against an entire civilization of warships) is to try to balance the scales in an evolving conflict between political/military actors and create a peace that learns from the foolishness of your species ultimate mistake.

Very interesting way to make a 2d tactical space combat game and I love how your job isn’t to conquer the universe like Stellaris, your job is to push and nudge in just the right places to stop full on a galactic war.

Dear @linux and @academicchatter folks:

Please suggest libre/open source tools that allow for the extraction of text and images from scientific pdf documents?

P.S: I'm on a linux machine. Would like something terminal friendly, if possible!

CCRhode,
@CCRhode@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m mystified that poppler-utils is not a viable option. Of course the *.pdf file would have to include the text itself, but many do.

Carunga,

Try Zotero. It is a complete literature databas but it’s PDF reader is very good at extracting images and text. Works on all OS, web and mobile. Native Linux client has been very smooth for me. Oh, terminal it doesn’t do though. If you want to extract a large amount in an automated way, its probably not the right tool.

Looks like another Have I Been Pwned, at least at a glance they’re looking for email addresses, and given that you have your email with them if you’re using this service they kinda do have it already
