I agree. Discovery is the least progressive Star Trek series and is already aging poorly. The other series use the Star Trek universe to cleverly explore present day issues whereas Discovery lazily frames today’s social issues as if they’re universal truths. It was a real back step for the franchise.

The original series was based in a post-race society. When Kirk and Uhura kiss, it wasn’t an interracial kiss in the show because the concept of race doesn’t exist in the 24th century universe. It got backlash when it aired because some people couldn’t contemplate a the future without their current bigotry existing. Star Trek explored current social issues by visiting some planet with a veiled version of that issue.

Contrast that to Discovery where Burnham is having a conversation with an Admiral and the Admiral brings up Burnham’s family’s history of slavery.

The scene you’re describing is a good example. Though I would argue that given this story line is set a millennium in the future, it isn’t just lazily progressive, it’s an ultra-conservative view of the future. It perpetuates today’s bigotries as universal truths instead of challenging the audience to perceive of a future without our current bigotries like the Kirk / Uhura kiss did 50 years ago.

I’m an immigrant from Australia and I remember having to change my word choices even though Canada and Australia are nearly culturally identical. It must be a lot more work coming from less culturally similar places.

Renting a 3 bedroom house in Toronto is more expensive than a similar house in Belleville + $1500 in monthly VIA Rail tickets. Plus lots of jobs are partly remote which makes the equation even more appealing.

I work remote, live in Belleville, and visit our Toronto offices every couple of months. My experience with VIA Rail has been positive though I appreciate that I have a lot of flexibility. I can work while on the train so the commute isn’t wasted time for me. Working while commuting is not something I could do if I drove or took a bus. The train can be late so I wouldn’t organize an in-person-meeting within an hour of the scheduled arrival.

I agree that the ticketing system should be improved to encourage commuting, it would be a headache to buy tickets individually weeks in advance if I were using the service more frequently.

Algorithmic advertising big tech companies (Meta, Google, Amazon, etc) generate profit at the expense of society. They blindly follow short term algorithms with no regard for their impact on society. We obviously should tax them but we should also make sure our laws enable us to prosecute people who profit by destroying society. Hold them accountable

Do you mean E2EE for voice calls and SMS? Otherwise why not use a trusted or personal VPN to solve this problem? I wouldn’t bother with trying to secure voice calls provided by a carrier as the recipient would also need those counter measures in which case why not use ab E2EE voice app like signal.

How does a data center consume water? Doesn’t every liter that enters as freshwater leave as slightly warmer freshwater? What am I missing here?

That’s unlikely in a closed heat exchange system. Maybe some additional evaporation because the water is slightly warmer. But unless I’m missing something, it seems very misleading to suggest that a Bitcoin transaction uses 16 kilolitres because of evaporation. Napkin math, it would require about 10 megawatt/hours of energy to evaporate that much water (please correct me if I’m wrong). I’m not a Bitcoin fanboy, I just don’t like BS.

There is a lot of Stack Overflow hate in this thread. I never had a bad experience. I was always on there yelling at noobs, telling them to Google it, and linking to irrelevant questions. It was just wholesome fun that briefly dulled my crippling insecurities
