Nemo,

As someone who’s never played, which ones the good one?

Nemo,

Three questions:

Can I play it in front of my kids?

What’s the minimum play session? (That is, how long from startup to the next save point?)

Is it a lot like Mass Effect?

Nemo,

Carter Vale. He does a lot of silly little songs on Instagram, but he’s clearly really talented. “Aliens” is my favorite.

Nemo,

If margins are so thin, how do they afford all those restaurant critics?

Nemo,

Well I caved and started a new Minecraft world, but I’m not sure I like my seed. Playing the original Moving Out with my kindergartner and he’s surprising good at it.

Nemo,

It’s on crazy sale on the Nintendo e-store right now, maybe other platforms, too.

Nemo,

Got the first Moving Out game on supersale and my kids are loving it. I’m always on the lookout for coup coöp games to play with them.

Nemo,

Vimm’s Lair has scans if as many old manuals as they could find, if anyone likes looking through old manuals.

Nemo,

Pikmin Bloom. It helps me get up and walking and has guided me to cool local public art.

Nemo,

Not a ROM hack, but Redigit, before going on to make Terraria, made something called SMB X, remixing SMB 1, 2, 3, World, and Zelda 1 and 2. It also had its own level editor. Totally fun.

Nemo,

The present. I can use emulation to play all my old favorites, often for free, and there’s never been such a rich plethora of indie and studio games available.

Nemo,

NES: River City Ransom, Crystalis, Zelda ][

SNES: Super Mario World, Chrono Trigger, Link to the Past

GB: Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Minish Cap, Tetris

DOS: The Quest for Glory series, ZZT

Nemo,

I did play that on emulator a decade or so ago. It’s part of the same series as Illusion of Gaia, right? I don’t really remember Terranigma that well, maybe it’s time for a replay.

Nemo,

Adding a separate comment to add, if you’ve never played it, Super Mario X was a very fun, apparently not-entirely-legal fangame made my Redigit (who went on to create Terraria). He took it down at Nintendo’s demand, but you can still find a copy.

How do you like to approach writing about games?

I've noticed there are some folks writing at length here on their experiences playing games, so this felt like a good place to ask. Do you take notes as you play, and/or after each session, then write out full thoughts upon completing a game?

Or are your reflections compiled only after finishing a game, no notes?

I've dabbled with different approaches, and haven't really settled on a consistent process personally.

@patientgamers

Nemo,

For me, it’s usually a series of reflections throughout my plsytime, no notes, rather than one big reflection at the end.

Nemo,

I enjoyed it so much more in Survival mode, but with a “save anytime” mod.

Games that still need more patience: what games released a year ago (or older) are you waiting for a sale on? Or that need another patch?

Other than a slew of Nintendo titles that maybe hopefully will come down in price (the patient gamers’ bane), I have my eye on the next time Divinity: Original Sin 2 goes on sale. A friend who never plays anything other than WoW loved playing Larian’s newest with me and I’m trying to get her to pick this up. Pretty sure...

Nemo,

I’ll probably pick up the Switch version of Link’s Awakening eventually, but not until I get bored with the games I already have.

Nemo,

Absolute best way to play Pokemon Red & Blue, IMO.

Nemo,

It’s one of the best Zelda games period and certainly the best made for a handheld console — and that includes the Switch ones. Enjoy!

Nemo,

Soul Calibur

Nemo,

I loved the little chibi versions of characters that appeared on the memory cards!

Nemo,

At this point:

  • Spelunky (play more, not start playing)
  • Dwarf Fortress (play more, not start playing)
  • Enderal (and maybe beat it this time)
  • Minecraft (my kids are waiting for me to set up a family & friends server)
Nemo,

The reverse order for me. A borrowed NES first at 5-6, then a secondhand C64 at 8. Learned to type and program BASIC on that thing.

Nemo,

Replaying Super Mario World for SNES with my five-year-old. First time for him, he loves Yoshi. I haven’t really played it all the way through in about a decade; my wife and I did it together when we were engaged, was the last time.

Nemo,

Bruh look at that logo and tell me it’s not intentional.

The New 8bitdo Retro Keyboard shipped early. Small-ish Male Hand for scale. (midwest.social)

I can try to answer any questions, but it doesn’t seem like the 8bitdo Ultimate software is availible for download yet. Im not big into mechanical keyboards, this is actually my first, so I don’t have much direct comparison experience to other keyboards....

Nemo,

What’s that other peripheral? Foot pedals?

Nemo,

Toad pulls roots faster, and he’s my favorite

Nemo,

Was Mace available on any consoles? I only saw it at the arcade, and even then, only at one specific arcade.
