NGL, I’m really digging what they are showing in this marketing campaign.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

That mod is the reason I played Elden Ring in the first place. The Souls games’ reputation and gimped co-op had kept me from them. Seamless co-op turned Elden Ring into one of the best shared multiplayer adventures I have ever had.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yes Alan Wake 2 is very good. It’s very unique and oozes with style. I really like the track Remedy is on lately, first with Control and now with Alan Wake 2, whereas their earlier games did not grab me.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

You could buy the game on Steam, get the source code archive and then refund I guess. Or keep it anyway to play, I understand it’s quite good.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

$200M ain’t no pocket change. One would hope such high-profile failures as this or Avengers would curb execs enthusiasm for live service games, but I’m not holding my breath.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Erm, that’s quite the bare bones trailer we’ve got here, somewhat underwhelming. Not every trailer is going to be Long Live the Lich or War Eternal, but come on.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

It was fairly obvious, but at least now it’s spelled out. I for one can wait for the best version to release.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

This is actually more to my taste than the crossword, thanks !

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Hopefully this is more fleshed out than the first game’s basic horde mode.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Here are a few picks off the top of my head:

  • Control: TPS, open-ish world, present day setting, solo only
  • Deep Rock Galactic: FPS, mission-centric, sci-fi setting, solo & co-op
  • Generation Zero: FPS, open world, sci-fi setting, solo & co-op
  • Kena: Bridge of Spirits: Action-Adventure, open-ish world, fantasy setting, solo only
  • Outward: RPG, open world, fantasy setting, solo & co-op
  • Remnant: From the Ashes / Remnant 2: TPS, open-ish world, sci-fi & fantasy setting, solo & co-op
NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

I will admit that Outward is something of an acquired taste. It’s not a looker for sure, and starts a bit harsh, difficulty-wise. However it has surprising depth and a true sense of discovery. It is very rewarding once you really get into it.

Plus it really shines in co-op play. It is the closest thing I know of, that can be compared to “Skyrim, but co-op”.

I stand by my recommendation as it is very much a “B game” and pretty unique.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

tl;dr: Watch what you put online and who you friend, especially on Steam. Once it’s on the internet, it’s there forever.

That right here is very much what it boils down to. Whether it’s SteamHistory or The Internet Archive or whatever public or private data store… Any information you publish is out of your control as soon as you do.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Story-wise EDF 6 is a sequel to 5, which was a reboot. The in-game ridiculous storytelling through radio communications is part of its charm, I find.

NeryK, (edited )
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

A few too many superlatives in their pitches for my taste. Not a bad idea overall, though the bias in favor of Rust is strong. Did it really become the go-to (heh) memory safe programming language for performance ?

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Not sure what you are referring to. The refund policy on Steam is the same for any games, early access or not. The game’s version number or finished state makes no difference.

Maybe you are thinking of the pre-purchase situation, where you can refund up to 14 days after the game’s release, instead of the date of purchase.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Oooh I really liked the first one. Slept on it for years then played it on Steam Deck. It was a perfect game for a portable gaming system.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’m on the fence about Arizona Sunshine 2. I understand it’s quite short relative to its price. I might wait for a deeper discount.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

“Bomb” as in “not selling” ? That ship has sailed a long time ago, hasn’t it ? They made hundreds of millions through that “crowdfunding” scheme of theirs already.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Point-and-click movement has been a staple of “Diablo-like” action-rpgs since the 90s. However I recently found out that I enjoyed them more when playing with a controller like they were a top-down twin-stick shooter, starting with Lost Ark. I don’t know about “more precise”, but it feels more natural to handle the positioning with direct control instead of pointing towards the destination.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Sure he’s an exec. He’s also one of the devs who started Arrowhead 15 years ago to make Magicka. Given his track record, I would give his word more credence than those of the likes of Yves “quadruple-A” Guillemot or Bobby “packaged goods” Kotick. His comms when the servers were on fire felt genuine.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Aaaand off the wishlist it goes.

Here’s the late TB piece on the original game: WTF Is… - Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons ?

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

This game is so good I can’t stop playing, even through its server woes and annoying bugs.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Amazing game, but its servers are not keeping up with demand. Being too popular is a good problem to have, until it’s not.

Helldivers: We'll "never" add a PvP-mode. This is to reduce toxic elements from the community. We want an environment that's supportive, fun and where we all are fighting on the same side. (twitter.com)

Nitter link: twiiit.com/Pilestedt/status/1757804756666339420 (Now fixed!) Might have to use this link multiple times to find a instance that isn’t rate limited or check the wiki and change the url manually.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

I mean… Nothing is stopping people from setting up ad-hoc PvP matches, is there ? I think Magicka PvP started as a grassroots thing back in the day, before there even were proper arenas in the game.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Fuck me, that is some quadruple-A-level bullshit from our man Yves. I played the closed beta and I am sorry to say that this game is going to tank, hard. Its gameplay loop is waaaay too simplistic to be making those grandiose claims.

Seeking: Kid-friendly Adventure/Exploration Games (PC)

My daughter (4) is very into exploring cities, homes and villages in Skyrim, feeding aliens in No Man’s Sky, and cleaning houses in House Flipper. She gets annoyed in games like House Flipper because she can’t leave the property to explore all of the visible houses on the block. I’d like to find other PC games that are...

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

If combat is an option, those simple ARPGs could fit the bill nicely:

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Still, it bears reiterating lest some start believing in the marketing they spin. No company or division of a company can be a friend to anyone. Even PC darling Valve isn’t ! (and I say that having spent thousands of euros on Valve’s products and services)

It’s kind of amazing they chose to go with that design, when they hadthe benefit of hindsight with recent superhero-backed games:

  • the live service Avengers game flopped pretty hard
  • the singleplayer Spider-man games did gangbusters

“Well duh, let’s try and make one of these live service games”.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yup, seems like the larger the company the more they gravitate to placing fewer and larger bets. After all, why be satisfied with some money when you could attempt to get ALL of the money ?

Except a lot of these bets are lost, and they do not come cheap. We’ll see about this one but it looks bound to have the same trajectory as Avengers (which had in fact a pretty decent campaign, followed by a mediocre grindy live service “endgame”).

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

The shared-screen twin-stick design is fine, but Arrowhead has been doing it since Magicka. This feel like them getting their shot at making a wider-appeal, bigger budget game. Hopefully they stick the landing and managed to keep the feel of the original while expanding the gameplay.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

That means the community servers running on leaked code are now the de-facto official servers, doesn’t it ?

Has such a thing ever happened before ? Usually these servers are at best ignored, and at worst being threatened or sued into shutting down.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Aragami 2 is more coop-friendly than the first game, but not as good overall.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

I bought The Making of Karateka. Not exactly a game, more like a playable documentary (akin with Atari 50 anniversary collection).

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Ordered-ish by recommendation:

  • SUPERHOT (it’s the most innovative shooter I’ve played in years)
  • Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
  • Sayonara Wild Hearts
  • Carrion
  • Planet of Lana
  • Jusant
  • The Artful Escape
  • The Gunk
NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

It does not look like Dead Space is getting any more patches. However in my recent (last month) experience it was very much playable from start to finish with very good performance on my PC (i9 10850K / RTX 3080). I guess your mileage may vary.

I do not know about Jedi Survivor yet, because I am waiting for it to come to EA Play. Last patch was in October so it looks like it is still maintained. Recent Steam reviews do still mention technical issues though.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

1440p with High graphics presets and DLSS Quality overall stayed in the 80-120 FPS range.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yes the issue with these L4D clones is that they have to improve upon the L4D formula, or have an interesting take on it. Vermintide and Payday succeeded on their own merits even though the core gameplay loop is very close (and it took each of them two games to get there).

I have tried both Back 4 Blood and the Anacrusis (in early access), and was pretty much over them after a couple of rounds.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Good business decision right there I think. Akin to how Vermintide does DLC too.

What are some alternative to soulless videogame franchises?

What I mean is… sometimes people are very loyal to a videogame franchise or a company because they loved a game they released years ago (Silent Hill/Konami with Silent Hill 2, Blizzard/Bethesda with their respective golden eras, some could argue this happens too with Pokémon and Final Fantasy, etc). Ethical/consumer reasons...

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Let’s go with some good non-AAA games that were not sequels and never got one either.

Single player:

  • Baba is you
  • Brothers
  • Mark of the Ninja
  • SUPERHOT
  • Vanquish

Better in co-op:

  • Astroneer
  • Deep Rock Galactic
  • Nine Parchments
  • Outward
  • Renegade Ops
NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Sustained ! Although I thought SUPERHOT Mind Control Delete was more of a roguelite spinoff than a sequel (did not play it).

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’s okay not to like it of course. As you have seen it’s nothing like the Trine games, sharing only a bit of lore with them.

It’s basically a very pretty arena-based top-down shooter reminiscent of Magicka (which I also loved), with a good difficulty curve. There is not much of a story to carry the game forward, so it hinges on whether you like the gameplay and the challenge it offers or not. I for one really enjoyed Nine Parchments, doing multiple runs in single player and co-op with friends (even a “hardcore” one, which we usually never touch).

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’s also a day 1 Xbox Game Pass release.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Counterpoint: Game Pass frees you from sunk cost bias and you do not feel compelled to keep playing a game because you invested money in it. That’s mostly how I feel about it. I have noticed 3 patterns in my own usage: “full on playthrough” (actual loss of a sale), “couple of hours and call it quits” (would have been a candidate for refund), “20 minutes then uninstall” (basically a demo). It’s likely Jusant here will fall in the middle category since I already played the demo during Steam Next Fest.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

Good for them !

And since Epic is publishing the game, this is one rare case where it’s legit for them to make it exclusive to their storefront on PC (as opposed to swooping in and offering timed exclusives deals to third party devs for distribution). Then again, it likely means this one will not be coming to Steam for a long time, if ever.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

The lack of VR support for in Odyssey, on top of numerous issues at launch, soured me on the whole thing. I know VR is a niche that did not take off so it likely did not make sense for them to prioritize it ; but Elite was the quintessential early killer app for VR, so it stings. Shame, I spent hundred of hours in Elite and would have liked to spend more.

NeryK,
@NeryK@sh.itjust.works avatar

The early times of this wave of VR (which really started with the commercial launch of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive) were very exciting. Lots of “experiences” back then: sometimes mindblowing, often half-baked, always interesting. After a couple of years people realized there was no money in it and lots of them moved on.

7 years in, I’m pretty much over early access promising prototypes and flat screen games being modded to support VR. I want VR-native games-ass games of the caliber of Half-Life: Alyx, or Moss. I want VR support to be a standard feature of any new cockpit-based driving or flying game, not an afterthought. We are not getting the former, and slowly maybe getting there for the latter.

Elite Dangerous is the perfect illustration of this cycle: Frontier started supporting VR very early. My first VR experience was Elite Dangerous on a loaned Oculus DK1. It was mind-blowing ! It was also very very puke-inducing ! Then proper hardware came with the Rift and Vive, Elite had full VR support, and it was fucking great. And now, well VR support is still there, but it’s no longer first class, and slowly decaying.
