EA just added classics like Dungeon Keeper, SimCity 3000, and Populous on Steam (www.theverge.com)

There hasn’t been a lot of good news out of EA lately, but here’s some: the company just launched a bunch of classic games on Steam. The new (old) releases include nine games in total, spanning franchises like Dungeon Keeper, Populous, and SimCity....

berg,

Oughh, Dungeon Keeper… That was one of my favorites as a child, the Swedish voice acting was top notch!

berg,

I didn’t believe you, but one search told me otherwise.

“as of May 2022, 160 monks, nuns, and ordinary people have self-immolated in Tibet since 27 February 2009” ref.

Your take should still consider the differences in these issues and the prevalence of Israel v Palestine in western media and why that might be, instead of sounding butthurt a dude’s sacrifice for something he believed in worked somewhat. If it makes you happier it’s probably gone with the next news cycle.

berg,

I don’t care for the conflict either, more than that I think it’s unfortunate. Much like my take on Tibet. I don’t think the CCP is generally liked much in the west though. And I don’t know much about the Tibetan conflict, but why would the west side as much with HK as we’ve done if we already was in China’s pockets? Or what are you trying to say?

berg,

Fair enough. I don’t think it’s only our cushy lives though. The influence the US has on Israel compared to China makes a difference. We know of the Uighur situation as well, but there’s not that much we can do than condemning. Sure, trade embargos I guess… But compared to Israel that is very much dependent on the west. There’s a viable way to some sort of solution through sheer influence.

berg,

Yeah, I hope for the same for Russia. To me it seems like that sort of change has to come from within though. External pressures is put through the internal propaganda machine and out comes agitation. But if they get a movement going I’m sure they’d be heard by the west. The HK demonstrations got a lot of light, not that it helped much… But what else is there to do. We could start a war, but I’m doubtful that will make things better.

It is a huge failure in communication to pretend that distro upgrades are entirely different versions of the operating system. It does nothing but make Linux seem more complex than it actually is.

The jump in distro versions, say, from Fedora 38 to Fedora 39, is not the same as the jump from Windows 10 to Windows 11. It’s more like the jump from version 23H2 to 24H2....

berg,

Curious way of seeing it. I’ve never considered a new major version as being an entirely new OS… Do normal users even consider new Windows versions as anything but a UI “upgrade”?

If you don’t want version numbers maybe you should run a rolling release distro? I don’t think you’ll be able to convince everyone to stop using them. They’re quite instrumental when dealing with old systems on LTS versions when having to deal with EOL.

Or maybe this post is more of a “I just realized”-post?

I tried, I really did

I’ve been an IT professional for 20 years now, but I’ve mainly dealt with Windows. I’ve worked with Linux servers through out the years, but never had Linux as a daily driver. And I decided it was time to change. I only had 2 requirements. One, I need to be able to use my Nvidia 3080 ti for local LLM and I need to be able...

berg,

love USB

That sounds funky, I like it!

berg,

To get in-game drops as far as I know.

berg,

Why does he suck? I know nothing about him.

berg,

Just because I were curious enough to check this out, from Wikipedia:

Worldcoin aims to provide a reliable way to authenticate humans online, to counter bots and fake virtual identities facilitated by artificial intelligence. Using a distribution mechanism for its cryptocurrency similar to UBI, Worldcoin attempts to incentivize users to join its network by getting their iris scanned using Worldcoin’s orb-shaped iris scanner.

berg,

I agree! It’s not easy to measure this and my equation of course falls a bit flat. But as a rule of thumb I think it’ll do. Albeit more so for the games I tend to play I guess.

My question stems from having seen people complain that pricy games were to short. I’m kind of thinking about it like a cinema visit you know? If you enjoyed the movie that was 2h and cost $10 (taken willy nilly from the air), how could you equate that to a game?

berg,

That’s pretty much my look on things as well! I’ve felt like the gaming community generally demands more out of a game than they’d a movie.

berg,

I guess I take for granted that extended time spent in the game contributes more to the subjective value. Otherwise, why play? Of course there are a plethora of reasons to keep playing. But if we disregard that for now.

There are edge cases. E.g. a lovely small title that isn’t replayable and barely three hours long. That one could bring the average up a bit, depending on the price. But I’m not asking for a universal rule, rather where the ratio starts to hurt subjectively for people.

Or well, I guess what I really wanted to know is how people compare the price of games to other recreational joys. Especially considering the timespan of the compared activities. Though maybe a bit poorly phrased. :)

berg,

What are you doing here? It’s not growing now is it? You see, it has to grow! The factory MUST grow!

berg,

I think a VAC ban only bans you from that one game, at most from other games with VAC. I got VAC banned in modern warfare 2 10+ years ago, but it hasn’t had an impact on my account/other games. More than a notice on my profile that it happened.

… just to add, the ban was justified. I went into a game and just held down the shoot button with a plethora of cheats on to see what it was like. It took all the fun out of it and cost me a game I liked. Not recommended. : )

berg,

Sure, there’s a possibility. But since it hasn’t happened in 10+ years I doubt it’s a problem.

berg,

IDK why it wasn’t included with the Steam release, but it’s always been my favorite part of the game.

They just didn’t have time at first. They’ve said that they’re working on it though.
